Below is a copy of the letter I sent to Adrian Chum, the choreographer, regarding the mis-labeling of dances. This is an issue that many of my fellow instructors have complained about for many years, and it is only getting worse.
    Hello Adrian,
You have got to be kidding! I am sorry, but I have seen this kind of MIS-LABELING of dances so many times, and just could not remain quite any longer. I am referring to your dance: Midlers Way. I have been teaching all levels of line dance for the last 20 years. I am always looking for new "Absolute Beginner" dances for my new “absolute beginner” students and this dance absolutely does NOT match that criteria! First off, the music is way too fast for an absolute beginner. And second, the steps with all the turns are way beyond an absolute beginner dancer. It is obvious you (and many others) really do not understand what an "absolute beginner" means. First - it should be a 1-wall dance, not 2 or 4, no turns at all. Second - the steps must be very, very easy (walks forward or backward, side togethers and maybe a vine…but certainly no shuffles, charlestons, mambos or rumba boxes with turns and no syncapation. Third - much slower music.
Jut because it is a 32 count dance with no tags or restarts, does not make it an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER, or BEGINNER. This should be classified as either a HIGH BEGINNER or maybe an IMPROVER or even an EASY INT, but in no way should it be classified as an "ABSOLUTE BEGINNER”.
I am posting this in the Carol Craven Newsletter in hopes that this message will get through to the many choreographers who continually mislabel their dances. If they have been dancing since they were 3 years old, (which many have) and are now very advanced, they have obviously lost sight of what it is to be a brand new, absolute beginner dancer. I hope this helps.
