  • A first for the UK, a live televised election debate between party leaders was shown on ITV1 on 15 April 2010. Presented by Alistair Stewart, Nick Clegg (Liberal Democrat), David Cameron (Conservative) and Gordon Brown (Labour) are the participants. Preceded by the 'coming next' caption displayed during Coronation Street and a trail from the continuity announcer.
    Key points:
    2:24 Opening statements
5:27 Immigration. First question, Gerard Oliver: "What key elements for a fair, workable immigration policy need to be put in place to actually make it work effectively?"
14:07 First mention of the catchphrase which came to define the debate.
15:48 Crime. Jacqueline Salmon: "I was born, and still work, in Burnley, Lancashire. The town has the highest burglary rate, per head of population, in the entire country. What confidence can you give me that towns such as this, all over the UK, can be made safer places to live and work?"
27:00 Expenses. Helen Ellwood: "I own a pub, and people like to chat over a drink. Nothing has provoked more discussion than MP's expenses. Given the recent scandals involving all parties, how are you intending to re-establish the credibility of MPs in the eyes of the electorate?"
37:24 Education. Joel Weiner: "I am in my final year of school. I have found that the system is incredibly greed-driven, so much so that often education for its own sake is sacrificed. We are over-examined and under-taught. What will the party leaders do to improve education?"
48:11 Spending. Robert Lewis: "How certain can you be that your party's policies will deal with the budget deficits without damaging economic growth?"
59:07 Defence. Nick Brimson: "British troops seem to be dying unneccessarily and far too frequently. In my opinion they are under-equipped and massively underpaid. What assurances can you give the armed forces that things will improve?"
1:10:11 Healthcare. Sindhu Navel: "What are the parties' visions for the future of healthcare in Britain? In particular, how will they address the cost pressures arising from an aging population and more expensive new treatments?"
1:20:31 Care. Alan Shaw: "When are each individual party going to introduce a fairer system to care for the elderly when it is required, especially those who have worked and contributed towards the country's economy, without the need for them to sell and dispose of their assets, and what are your policies?"
    1:29:06 Closing statements

Many wanted him out in 2010 so as to get Boris in. Look at us now

It's good to watch stuff during the Brown, Blair, and Cameron years. I like to reflect on those.

Clegg singlehandedly destroyed his party. Too bad Charles Kennedy couldn't stay on.

Immigration is too high - Cameron 2010. Welcome to Britain in 2024: millions not tens of thousands.
