One thing that wasn't mentioned that comes in handy for me is to only use the atomos recorder without hitting record on the sony. It saves a tremendous amount of battery life while still getting a great quality. Awesome vid, dude!
I have been doing a lot of landscape photography and a little b-roll filming on my Canon 550d over the years. Been struggling a lot to get smooth video. When you said that you use the Sony for the talking head shots and gave an example did it have problems focusing when you move your head back? It appeared that way
Would it be better to begin investing in full frame Sony apposed to the Micro 4/3? Currently not invested into any system (just have some old Canon lens, and an a6000 with kit lens) so not committed to anything as of right now. Been trying to make a purchase decision between these two cameras for a month now Ebay prices currently are pretty cheap for the GH5, with the a7iii being alittle bit more and just for the body. What would your thoughts be? Thanks!

I'm still here with my 3 year old G7 . I film vlog footage every day and need that flip out screen and better stabilization so GH5/G9 are next on my list unless Sony changes that screen and has 4k at 60 fps.
The Everyday Dad If the G85 came out when I was camera shopping back then I would have gotten it. Now, nah. If it had 60fps yes. I like the small size but willing to give it up for more specs and 4k at 60fps.
Is the GH5 autofocus really that bad? I didn't notice the camera really struggling in recording you in a sit down section. Is it just the background that is constantly changing or searching for focus? cause it seems to lock in on your face extremely well. Also I think I have seen a video where you have the GH5, the one where you called it the perfect camera, and it has good shallow depth of field in the background. The GH5 seems like a mix between Canon and Sony in having Sony's picture quality but Canons ease of use with touch menu and side flip screen but you are scaring me with autofocus and low light as well as depth of field comments...I want this cam!
Well done, Gary! I don't have the GH5, but love my a7III. That said, I wish these two cameras would have a baby and BAM... THE camera! Guess we'll just have to wait and see what comes out in the future! Thanks and keep up the great work!!

Great video. Under the category of least amount of work out of the camera here is my eval. Tungsten lighting: Canon, Sony, Pani (if you custom white balance the Pani it has a great look, but it's different). Outdoors: Canon, Pani, Sony (The Sony has horrible greens. As long as your not in a field, the Sony is very good.)
Thanks for the great video. I shoot mostly food/recipe photos and videos - would you recommend the a7iii? I'm leaning more towards that one except now I'm thinking about the fuji xt3! Ahh!
Great breakdown. The frustrating thing about the “There is no perfect camera” quip that we all tell ourselves is it’s not like we are asking for the flying cars and burning water for fuel. Everything we want in one camera is pretty pedestrian. Sony flip screen, Panasonic AF, Canon 4k (without huge crop and DPAF). These things aren’t rocket surgery and what doesnt’ make sense is any of these companies can do this at any point and win youtube (and all the influencer power that implies) for the foreseeable future until the others step up. If Panny had put AF in GH5, the Sony would have NEVER gotten the footing they have this year. It would be interesting but really nobody on youtube would buy in to those expensive lenses. Sony foolishly left the door open by not putting an articulating screen so by this time next year, we will be talking about a different brand. Somebody needs to make a camera that doesn’t wet the bed in some needless fashion. It’s like they don’t want to get rich. I don’t understand it. Love, love, love your stuff man
Love your content you always keep me watching till the end. Am trying to figure out my first youtube camera. Thanks alot for all of your effort. Subbed
Hi ! Can you please tell me wich focus settings did you used on GH5 for this video ? Also which color profile for both of the camera ? Did you modified in post any footage ? Thank you !
I just a mirror mount for my sony A7III instead of a monitor so I get live feed on my video while looking at at. It simply reflects the screen one you articulate it and it works great. Only $20 off amazon.
Thanks for the review but my brain was seriously being inverted when you often talkd about one camera while either showing footage of the other or had the wrong camera named on the screen... (filming). Enjoyable watch, as i am torn between these two cameras too. Cheers
Did you mention the A7iii is a professional photography camera too. Most of us new age videographers are or should be photographers to master our craft. I'm a GH4 user and the photos have always bugged me after switching from canon 4 years ago. Can't wait to get my A7iii.
Gary, great review and especially very entertaining and informative video, for sure. I think this will be the dilemma for years to come, no perfect camera that will do everything perfectly; at least for now that is. Thanks!
More than a decade ago Nikon D90 was the dream camera for a aspiring filmmakers who don't want start with camcorders. There were great short films made in vimeo that time. Now there are more options and more problem to create (digital) film.
Well Sony is max 8 bit 4 2 0 video and GH5s has the ability to record 10 bit 4 2 2 400 mbs ... SO really no contest. But if you haven't learned to focus yet the Sony might suit your needs. Fully HDMI plug on GH5/s, unlimited record time on GH5/s, goes down to ISO 80 on GH5s so no real need for VND. Sony has no ND built in that I know of . Overall image quality of the Sony is still Sony but I do find the GH5s a much more pleasing color science.
I do not care about brands fight. I use what suits sduit for me. Its gear! Beside AF or IBIS or Slow-motion or flipy screen or FF... My question for you is : image quality. What looks better? I own a gh5 and thinking about moving to sony a7iii. Which one produce bwrttwrr better image? My Gh5 produce some noise and I getting tired of it.
Thank you so much for the review! I’m still debating between the two and I feel like I’m going crazy! I don’t have a ton of money to drop on the Sony lenses. Also, for those saying they were confused watching his review when he’d record with one camera while talking about the other, I totally get why he did that! It’s not like he has two sets of the same camera to record a GH5 with his GH5 😂 I guess he could’ve recorded another object but still, it wasn’t difficult to follow!
Panasonic's probably the most consumer-friendly but quality brand out in the market today. I'm still using my G7, hoping to really master the camera first before considering upgrading to a better one (not to mention that I am broke as a joke). That being said, aside from the autofocus, I think the other weakness of the Panasonic or at least the Lumix line is the color. Compare it with say, sony or canon, it is inferior in my opinion.
Good video, GH5 was facing the sun if it wasn't the quality would of looked better. If you are a low light shooter get a A7 III if you want sharp great video get a GH5. The A7 III will always be a little bit softer than the GH5 I have noticed.
The picture generated by the a7lll is Exquisitely beautiful. It has rich color saturation, beautiful blacks and whites wonderful gradients from the grayscale, and haunting depth of field. I am totally fucking amazed how beautiful it is! Perhaps it is the glass here that makes the dif. I’d like to see a very high-end piece of glass test with the Panasonic. With that said, I thank you for a remarkable, fun video. Really enjoyed the humor and enthusiasm. Good work bro!
You should have made more of a point with Low light and Photography. Low light is absolute garbage with the Gh5 and photography is very limited with the GH5 as well. I own both. Both are great. It's like the industry works together to not make the perfect camera. Haha smh
How is the photography limited ? Low light isn't a problem but i might do a lot of photos so as there arent a lot of videos / reviews on the photo side of the GH5, i m split up about getting it or the A7III. One week i' m like ok i get the GH, then next week i m thinking about getting the A7III. I m allmost going crazy with this
@@xXShowGameXx Seriously! It's like we're on a consumer treadmill before having bought anything. I guess it's better than spending two grand and being disappointed with our purchase, but meanwhile no images are taken!
There is a camera that is fullframe, has a really good autofocus in video and has fully articulated screen. The 6D mk ii. Imagaine if Canon would have packed it with up to date specs and with good 4K instead of what it ended up to be.
The Everyday Dad 6D mk ii Huge? The body weighs roughly 100 grams more than the body of the A7 III. Ad a cage and an external monitor as you did in this video and the latter becomes heavier and bulkier than the 6D mk ii.
It's so confusing that the Sony camera is shown with the GH5 info text and vice versa :p

Tungsten lighting: Canon, Sony, Pani (if you custom white balance the Pani it has a great look, but it's different). Outdoors: Canon, Pani, Sony (The Sony has horrible greens. As long as your not in a field, the Sony is very good.)
What monitor do you use with the A7 III and can you set up your phone to do it?
I use the andycine a6 monitor 👍 and you can set your phone up to be a monitor but I think using a dedicated monitor is much easier.
Thanks!
Love, love, love your stuff man
Great point!
i want to buy a6400 but i. am worried about bettery...! 6600 good for bettery but so expensive what i do ?
is the a7iii have rec time limited and stop after some minutes ?
Been looking for a good review comparing both these cameras for a while, Thank you!!
Great job man! Making some good points here
Why A7III has DOF in background more than GH5?
Is it matter of lens or sensor or settings?
it's the full frame sensor
Love your content you always keep me watching till the end. Am trying to figure out my first youtube camera. Thanks alot for all of your effort. Subbed
Can Lumix fix autofocus issue with software update or...?
Hi ! Can you please tell me wich focus settings did you used on GH5 for this video ? Also which color profile for both of the camera ? Did you modified in post any footage ? Thank you !
Why are the camera labelled wrong at the start? Is that just a marketing thing?
He used the Sony a7 3 to film the "GH5" And used the GH5 to film the "A73" 👋
Thanks! I’ve been having a really hard time deciding haha
I hope it was useful! But yeah its really hard to pick since there are so many good ones these days.
I just a mirror mount for my sony A7III instead of a monitor so I get live feed on my video while looking at at. It simply reflects the screen one you articulate it and it works great. Only $20 off amazon.
Dude, great review. I bought both. you are totally right. The only problem is cost of lenses..
I hope you still like this camera, cause I'm going to get it this month!
Do Olympus lenses work good on gh5?
dude yes, best review and by far my favorite reviewer fro the gear. You're hitting the things I've used and need but don't have atm.
the AF looked way more smooth on the GH5s. The A7iii took a sec. Anyone else notice that ?
yeah it does! I found it more usefull in the GH5
Thanks!
Thanks so much Steve! 👍
Lol I at first I thought you said "I have a TON OF MONEY FOR LENSES
Panasonic's probably the most consumer-friendly but quality brand out in the market today. I'm still using my G7, hoping to really master the camera first before considering upgrading to a better one (not to mention that I am broke as a joke). That being said, aside from the autofocus, I think the other weakness of the Panasonic or at least the Lumix line is the color. Compare it with say, sony or canon, it is inferior in my opinion.
Great job on your channel, dude. You remind me a lot of they guy from Demolition Ranch, except you handle different kinds of "guns."
whats a good everyday lense for the gh5 that can blur out background images good?
That’s a tough one because the mft sensors are pretty small and you need a pretty fast lens to do it. But maybe one of the sigma 1.4 prime lenses 👍
Good video, GH5 was facing the sun if it wasn't the quality would of looked better. If you are a low light shooter get a A7 III if you want sharp great video get a GH5. The A7 III will always be a little bit softer than the GH5 I have noticed.
You show the opposite camera in each picture and video its confusing me
Man this is the video I needed to see. Thank you so much.
Thats awesome! I'm glad it was able to help!
@@TheEverydayDad I was back and forth between the two for weeks now, but I feel confident that I'll appreciate the A7iii
They are both awesome cameras, it’s really hard to go wrong with either 👍
Good stuff-Love my GH5
Its sooo darn good!
Two great choices! Thanks, TEDD! Well done!
Thanks so much Dennis!
Very good video thanks for your thoughts
Thanks so much Rick!
Please review GH5's new firmware 2.4. Heard it improves the af
I m allmost going crazy with this
In photo a7iii is better, in video are same
@@xXShowGameXx Seriously! It's like we're on a consumer treadmill before having bought anything. I guess it's better than spending two grand and being disappointed with our purchase, but meanwhile no images are taken!
@@xXShowGameXx Low light on sony is insane. It's just better than the gh5 imo.
There is a camera that is fullframe, has a really good autofocus in video and has fully articulated screen. The 6D mk ii. Imagaine if Canon would have packed it with up to date specs and with good 4K instead of what it ended up to be.
That but the 6D is also HUGE, I don't know how someone could carry that around everywhere.
The Everyday Dad 6D mk ii Huge? The body weighs roughly 100 grams more than the body of the A7 III. Ad a cage and an external monitor as you did in this video and the latter becomes heavier and bulkier than the 6D mk ii.
I prefer the sony a7iii but i just bought the canon sl2
Nice! I'm thinking about getting one of those to try out next 👍
The Everyday Dad yes. Btw your video is very nice and fun👍. Hope you can make more reviews about cameras😄😄
Excellent review again brother
Thanks so much!
The Panasonic has a very flat picture due to the lack of bokeh. The subject of the shooting and the background merge together.
But what’s the kd?
i'm happy with what GH5 done for me. Many great feature. and one thing you miss 6K Anamorphic Video of Gh5. 400Mbps. That the beast.
Thanks very helpful..comparison 🙏
I’ve always wanted to get the GH5 with log!!
It’s really darn good 👍
