- Hika - In Memoriam Tōru Takemitsu - Leo Brouwer.
“Hika” (translated from Japanese as Elegy, Mournful melody) was written by Brouwer to commemorate the passing of his lifelong friend and composer Tōru Takemitsu. It was premiered in 1997 by Shin-ichi Fukuda.
One notable feature of the work regards the first page, and the manner in which the measures are separated by blank spaces.
In the commentary, Leo writes “The blank space in A~B means “Count down to death”. Play as quietly as possible.
Recorded live in concert for the South Bay Guitar Society on November 4th, at the
Saint Francis Episcopal Church, San Jose, California.
Video and Sound producer: Artemy Kolesnikov
Guitar: Martin Blackwell

Great performance, man!👏🏻
It was a great pleasure working on the sound and video for you!
I remember one time a friend suggested I learn Hika (Fred the man) and I straight up told him: "I don't like that piece". I think it was because I hadn't heard you play it. You are the man!
Best version of Hika, bravissimo Dragos❤
My favorite version so far! ❤❤❤❤
So very beautiful and tragic; I very much look forward to more Brouwer and 20th century works from your amazing hands!
