Cool subject! I’ve had the please to meet Gimili and Sam at a couple different ComicCons. They both told me that they all smoked a Cherry blend on film. They said there was a table full of different tobaccos to choose from. But that’s what they choose. Neither knew the brand.
What the hobbits and others in Lord of the Ring's smoked in their pipes is a fun thing to speculate on even though we know there can be no definitive answer. But the depth of Tolkien's mythology itself invites this kind of speculation in so many ways. One part of me thinks that given hobbits love of food, surely it is reasonable to surmise that they would have come up with some sort of topping or casing (i.e. aromatics) for at least some of their tobacco. On the other hand, surely they likewise would appreciate natural tobaccos with their own natural flavours, like a naturally sweet and citrusy Virginia or something dark fired. Given that Tolkien himself apparently smoked Capstan Navy Cut, a Virginia, you'd have to at least think he'd have this type of tobacco in his mind when he wrote about his characters smoking. How could he not draw upon his own personal experience that way -- and he was quite likely smoking such while he wrote these works. Of course, when it all comes down to it, I'd imagine Tolkien would picture the pipe smoking world of Middle Earth as being very much like that of Earth itself, where there are all sorts of different tastes and preferences. Certainly the fact there were these three known blends (Old Toby, Southern Star, etc.) would certainly suggest that. Perhaps Tolkien left it intentionally vague so that his readers could fill in whatever flavour or whatever scent of pipe tobacco appealed to them most and would set the pleasant tone he sought by it. (One can imagine that if he had, let us say, specified that they were smoking a heavy perique blend, many of us might not find that image so terribly relaxing or appealing, even if others might! :D )
Most interesting video...I love the Hobbit Pipesmoking speculation and merchandise associated with it. In my own mind it was always a special pipe from your own collection paired with a particularly fragrant tobacco from your cellar which you would be happy to share with a Hobbit after a good meal.Thank you for sharing.
Mark, Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. I'll have to find that tobacco and try it. You always have such interesting and informative videos. Stay well.
I think my interest in pipes began with finding my great grandpa's old pipe when I was younger and seeing Sherlock Holmes smoking a pipe. I swore to my mother I wouldn't take up smoking like most of my family had but I do like to collect pipes and good tobacco does smell quite nice. She used to get a particular kind for my grandpa before I was born. I actually have a pipe based on Gandalf's pipe since I like to collect interesting things, and a pipe with a stem that long was interesting enough.
Thanks for sharing some practical information and cultural background about the Auenland series. I'm looking for some tobacco with better room notes than my beloved English and Balkan mixtures (wife related issues), and to give it a try to the Auenland series is in my plans. By the way, Bremen's Christmas markets are very nice, especially during snowy days. Frohe Weihnachten, Cheers.
HU Darkwood Scenery is my recommendation. Virginia, Turkish/Orientals, Burley and a dash of Cavandish with some very nice toppings for that 'wife friendly' room note whilst not detracting from the tobacco smoking pleasure.
GREAT VIDEO, Mark!! ...liked the video so much---I went out and purchased some Auenland---really a GREAT aromatic; and that is coming from a traditional English lover of the flake!! On occasion, I do like an aromatic as a change up tobacco. Thanks for the tobacco tip! Vauen should give you a 5% commission on sales because you are such a great diplomat for them!! Keep the videos coming---take care!!
...lol...thanks for watching, Tim! Yeah...sometimes, it's just good, to do a little changing...even if it's just for one or two bowls... And the VAUEN tobaccos are really quite nice...but you don't see em very often here in the shops...because the shops have a lower margin on these tobaccos, compared to other producers... Take care! Talk soon! Mark
Hi there, Tolkien actually assisted the translator of the books and said himself that he liked the opportunities the german language gave him with names. Also shire was likely to translate to "Gau" which was unacceptable, because of its associations with the NS-regime.
+Tomitius Tritus Hello, in the Dutch version of the Lord of the Rings shire is actually translated as gouw which is basicly the dutch version of the word Gau in German I think. This because of course the association with the NS-regime in the Netherlands is not very strong due to the lack of historical knowledge on the subject by most Dutch people. So I presume your assumption on the subject of calling it Auenland in stead of Gau are right on the spot!
+Jim Anonymous Greetings Friend; It´s disgusting, i think, how they managed to "poison" many words in our language, by hammering their ideology irremovable into them. You can literally watch people hold their breath if some words appear, even in a casual context. As beautiful it is, language can be converted to an insanely destructive and vicious weapon and we all should protect it from those who try to infect it with hate again these days. We all can see the scars left in it, reminding us of the last time they did.
+Tomitius Tritus, I think this can be seen world wide, be it regarding the holocaust, slavery or fascist regimes. I personally feel that since language is dynamic and not static the meaning of words changes. This makes it problematic to "protect" language and some words from changing for the worse. I do however think that as a listener we are obliged not only listen to the words a person speaks (and their conceived general meaning) but also what message people are trying to transfer. If people are trying to transfer a harmless message and in the process use "tainted" words this does not make their message "bad". Therefore to a carefull listener the need to "hold their breath" when certain words are used is only justified for messages that would justify holding your breath regardless of which words are used. Thereby the "power of words" is greatly reduced and we would return to a "power of messages", which would be in my oppinion be more justified. Just my humble opinion on the subject. Hope I am not offending anyone, I know some words may always remain controversial to some.
+Jim Anonymous I do absolutely agree with you. I may have chosen my words a bit hasty. There is a very martial tone to my comment, that was inadequate and said more about my emotional conection to the situation here in germany. What i meant was more like to not let the "Deutungshoheit"(interpretive superiority?) to some people who try to manipulate with it. To protect was a too static word, to keep it alive, fluxuating and free would fit it better.
Im a Star Wars Nerd. (Been a Star Wars Content Creator on RUclips for more then 7 years now) If you dig deeper, there are quite a few examples, but probably not important enough to spark Mainstream interest, i have to admit.
Great video and review. I always imagined that hobbits would smoke Virginia tobacco because they were simple folk who cultivated their own crop. Just my opinion.
DustyPipeSmoker Yeah...that`s what I thought too...so lets see, what the expert of the Lord of the Rings council will tell us, in the interview, I will do very soon... Thanks for watching - much appreciated!
Great channel. I barely passed first year german in college and I wanted to ask a question: How do you say "I really enjoy pipe smoking" in German? I know Google translate would butcher the translation. Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time and good words, my friend! Well...that would be: "Ich geniesse es wirklich, Pfeife zu rauchen!" Take care! Hope, you are well! Mark
Hey, Thank you. Awesome shed by the way, really a great place to relax, right ? Im thinking about buying a Vauen Siman, the Aragorn of the Auenland series. Is it suitable for a beginner ? I don't want to start puffing everyday, only for relaxation once in a while. I owned a corncob as I was 18 (im now 23 and learned a little more in the web) and got frustrated quickly as I smoked it to hot and got tongue burn. I know everyone recommends a straight billard for a beginner, but I really want a LOTR pipe, since I just read the chapter on Pipe weed :D
Hey Jose! Thank you so much for taking the time! And...yeah...absolutely suitable...no problem with that. ...nice pipes...and fit for "normal use"... also for beginners... Take care! Be well! Mark
Bremen Pipe Smoker Already tried it out the first time, but I got the packing to loosely, gotta practice... No tongue burn though. The pipe is top notch aswell, really a great first pipe.
On your point of "Auenland" being an even better name for the Hobbit-lands then "the shire"... You are on to something! Actually, Tolkien himself (the language nerd that he was) was very much involved into choosing the best possible words for the German translation. Thats also how we got the word "Elben". With a b instead of "Elfen"; if I remember correctly.
As a German I would not necessarily think of Lord of the Rings then hearing the word "Auenland" at least not If I wasn't a fan... We also have the Terms Auenwald or Auwiese and so on...
...yeah...agreed...pretty much looks like that...I don't don't know, why they call the model "Gimly"...maybe perhaps, because it's short...LOL Take care! And thanks for watching! Mark
The first video really made my year. Everyone should be reading you.... ! I mean blessings! Guess in U:S:A: there are not this delicacies... Unique ! Must be an Artist : BREMEN PIPE SMOKER.! 2017.8.1. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

amazing! thanks for sharing
I have read on pipesmagazine that Stokkebye Nougat was smoked on set so maybe Stokkebye Cherry was the blend they were talking about
Beautiful pipe! The proportions are exquisite and oozes quality.

Loved your review, particularly the comment on the words choice, very professional. 👍 A bowl of Auenland tastes better now. :D
Nice video, dinged deep down for this good content

Frogmorton is also a LotR reference... also Just for Him has a middle earth line. Plenty are inspired by Tolkien's works apparently!
Danke für die Review. Sehr nice. Der kleine Werkraum sieht gemütlich und besuchenswert aus! Ich packe gleich mal meine Pfeife ein und komme rum ;)
Yeah...my pleasure! Bring some baccy... :-)
