It's my personal theory that the giant polar bear is the reason the white haired boy's people failed their expedition and never came back for him while also leaving an X in blood on the stone pointing in the direction that it wandered off to.
the arrow was pointing towards where they thought paradise was but i agree it was probably the bear. I like to think his family are the ones who stabbed all those spears in it.
Yeah, it'll still almost guarenteed to screw you up, but you're significantly more likely to live that way, even if you end up breaking an arm or some ribs and the like in the process. I'd definitely rather hit tree branches than fall straight down to the dirt. Edited to fix a typo

falling through tree branches actually does dampen your fall and make it more possible to survive
