Mattias Verduijn he didn't test all of the main features of this device. The least they could've done was let someone else give their impressions on gamestream. This is one of Nvidia's biggest selling points for this device and not covering how well it performs makes this review incomplete.
***** I wouldn't necessarily call Nvidia's Grid service a "main feature". He wrote the review from his (and most people's) situation, which doesn't include a PC with a recent Nvidia Graphics Card.
Most people who won't be using Nvidia's gaming features would rather use a device like the Nexus player or some other alternative rather than paying the premium for Nvidia's device. Gamestream works with almost any 600 series graphics card and onward. They're over 2 years old at this point. In the tech world, that's not recent.
***** I'm pretty sure most other Android TV devices don't have an option for 500 Gb of storage, which (for me at least) would already be one main argument for buying this device. Also the technology being 2 years old doesn't change the fact that most people still do not own a "gaming" grade PC, since most people are using notebooks anyways.
You'll need a good internet connection and more important, a beast router! Trust me, you'll get bored pretty damn fast with android games and all those other things. I had a nvidia shield tablet with controller but there are just a few games that support the controller and there are just not that many quality game for android. Atleast not good enough to buy such a expensive thing.
Yep it has grid and was extended free till August. But your going to want to hook up an Ethernet cable just so you get the best signal. (My internet with Ethernet is 20mbps download. Wireless its 1mbps) So I use Ethernet and there's no issue at all
***** If you buy Nvidia Shield for it's Grid streaming service you need to have a fast internet speed... it clearly says on nvidia site that for 1080p streaming you need the ping time to nvidia data centers to be
mikos321 no. watch the announcement. from what i recall and Nvidia Shield TV is revolutionary and current gen console sucks (but with much better support for now ofc) is 25mpbs download speed for GRID stream games to work.
its funny that even a year later these things hold their value so well on the second hand market, still $200 on ebay its basically the power user android tv option it does literally everything and is also super hackable for sideloading all kinds of apps
Why would a pc owner who has a good/awesome gaming pc not just but a hdmi cable and hook the pc up to TV. If they can afford the £600 for the pc and a 4k TV surely a hdmi cable or simply moving the pc is the easiest option.
I see where you're coming from but this is meant to fit with an entertainment center. A PC is too clunky and would look out of place in the living room.
MrMjoez Moving a PC is not an easy option at all. A long hdmi cable would work for output, but input would not be possible. A HTPC that streams over the local network or this is the easiest and best option imo.
MrMjoez It is streaming via GRID servers with $20 - $30 USD monthly fee for that. 720p 30FPS or 1080p 60FPS on all games available and max settings (ultra and such u name it) This guy fucked up who doesn't own PC and doesn't know what a PC really is.
***** There are two Grid apps in Nvidia Shield Console, one is for Grid Online Service which is subscription base but currently free for few months, another is the offline streamer if you have a high end nvidia GPU in your PC then you can stream your PC and Steam games directly from your nvidia shield.
8 years later, i still use the Shield TV everyday quite literally. I have cable on app on there. All my streaming apps, i play Geforce Now which is now vastly improved over what it was in 2015. You dont need to own a PC at all, and stream runs perfect over wire. I game more on there than on my consoles because the top tier GFN service can run games at 4k with an RTX 4080. Ive not needed to upgrade to the latest shield models, the 2015 one is still good, i can do without the ai upscaling and dolby atmos of the 2019 one. I love it. It outlasted my PS4 and Xbox one which i no longer have. And itll probably outlast my Xbox Series X in terms of usage
Well, I wanted someone to tell me the PC streaming game service... which there is none actual testing in the review. Therefore, don't even watch if you were wondering about that. Did nothing for me.
You do realize it can play Crysis 3, Doom 3, Half Life 2, etc. natively. Did you not do your research before making this? More PC titles are to come as well.
Adi Bejleri Ha, always wondered what goes through the youtubers heads when they talk about power on cell phones, computers, etc. and use something that makes it barely break a sweat to do.
***** Yes, I agree with you that they barely do anything with their mobile division before abandoning it, they are already planning on a new tablet and they barely did anything revolutionizing on the old one. Although I wouldn't buy one of these because quite frankly NVidia barely does shit with their mobile division, I was just pointing out a point that in case someone would want this, they would know a little more. Money is much better spent on a good PC, the PS4 or the Xbox One for just a $100 more than this thing.
***** Exactly 10 yr old gaming+ you're better off putting that $300 into a real pc. Or hell anything because you sure as fuck won't be getting any android gaming fun out of it. Andriod games are a god damn joke. Not one thing great has come out period. And never will. This product is a stupid waste of time. Buy a real pc , get a hdmi cord and be done with it. Hell sad to say better off just buying an xbox one or ps4 frankly. And that's the real truth. This product just like their shield tablet is pure FAIL>
***** What if you don't have a PC and want to play PC games? What if you have a bad PC and you want to play games on highest settings? Do you even realize that you don't stream games from YOUR PC, you do it actually via internet from nvidia?
Kyle Into no you don't, you stream games from nvidia data centers.. you don't need to own a pc, that's the whole point, why else would GRID need a fast internet connection?
Alex xeon My shield shuts off randomly too. But it does this if I'm in an app for too long like watching RUclips for 6 hours then it shuts off randomly. This is more of a nvidia software problem that they need to fix. (When I eventually restart it it shows android is starting) And a factory reset will fix the lag
Great video and amazing review! Can Nvidia Shield Tv play android games like Battle Alert War Of Tanks?Just curious.I would really appreciate it if you replied.
You can still stream 4K video even if your HD TV is just 1080p. It just looks better then 1080p. Try a 4k Video File and you will see what I mean even on your "old" 1080p HDTV. A lot of Chinese Android boxes load 4k video files just fine on a 1080p screen.
You don't need a PC to stream from Nvidia Grid, do you? You will need a PC to stream games from your PC to the Nvida Shield, but not if you want to stream from the Grid Service. Am I right?
Is it possible to run an emulator for old gaming platforms and play roms one can download from the internet? If that would be possible i'd get one immediately
hudimudi You can install apps from other sources than the Play Store just like you can on any regular Android device as far as I know, so even if an app isn't compatible according to the Play Store you may still get it to run.
Odd that the author of this video did not realize that he does not need a PC to play the NVIDIA GRID games, since those are streamed from NVIDIA's servers in the cloud. It's the difference between GRID (from the cloud) versus GameStream (from a local PC).
The reviewer is missing one key point: The tegra X1 is strong enough to handle PS3/Xbox 360 quality games or even better, and proof of this is the announcements that Crysis 3, Doom 3 BFG edition, Borderlands 2 and the Prequel and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance are coming to Nvidia Shield. Not to mention that several videos just surfaced of the Tegra X1 running several gamecube games at 100% speed with near no graphical bugs, and even smash bros brawl for the wii at 90% speed with graphic glitches (Kudos to the Dolphin developers for progressing this much in such little time) meaning it's only a matter of time for when the Nvidia Shield could actually be better than a console in terms of game library content and quality.
Nvidia shield pro android tv I have received this from america today with no way of plugging it in any ideas thanks the plug lead and sliding attachment is all connected. output is 19V 2.1A
You don't need a PC for GRID service. It's on the cloud, you only need an internet connection. You need a gaming PC only if you want to stream games to the console yourself.
enemybird If your point is that Android games are now only on a par with a retro console then you are missing the point. This is more than a console. The Dreamcast was a much underrated console and I love some of the Shmups on it but to just judge it on the quality of its native OS games is more than unfair
enemybird It can run way better than that, Half Life 2 runs brilliantly on it. Android games in the main are not as big or complex as as current Gen Consoles but the Shields ability to stream PC Games and run a plethora of emulators and other Android software such as Kodi, office productivity, educational software and a bucket load more. Even if you dont own a PC you can use their Grid games, giving you access to numerous PC titles which is constantly growing. It may be the start of genuine AAA titles on Android, who knows....Android has always been an under powered platform but its is now starting to catch up.
Would of been cool if they had a 399$ model that had something like Windows 7 32bit edition to be able to play some other games not supported for the game streaming.
But its the PC network. Its not as big as the Xbox or PlayStation network. If nvidia could get copies of games that are compatible to their console and have their own network to it. It may be able to compete
Byron Cai I dont understand why you wouldn't just have a games console then, you have to own a high end pc and this device it seems a bit stupid to me but thats just my situation
IKodeInSpark You don't have to own a high end PC. Nvidia has servers with high powered PCs in the west coast and england. When you fire up a game from there grid service. One of their PCs are playing it and streaming it to you.
If you could put Steam OS or Windows on this it would be a great gaming device. Its more of a media device with gaming features rather than a console with media features.
This guy is amazing he uses the best phone in the world( Nexus 6) speaking of which I was gonna buy one but I brought Nexus 5 as it was to expensive, now its the same price!!!!
Need some help here please I have an HDD format for mac with mp4 1080p DOES NVIDIA SHIELD TV SUPPORT PORTABLE EXTERNAL 1TB HDD MAC FORMANT (EXTENDED JOUNERAL) MY HDD IS POWER BY USB 3.0 ONLY... if somebody knows about this question please let me know I'm planning buy a shield tv in a few days thank you ......
This can run Crysis, Half Life and Doom natively. Why didn't you talk about those. And you don't need a PC for using Nvidia Grid. You need PC for PC streaming not Nvidia Grid streaming. This wasn't really a good review. Better luck next time.
Great as a media player for your Android device but shit as a gaming console. In terms of gaming, real consoles like Xbox One and PS4 blow this out of the water (yes, I know they are more expensive). Playing mobile and last-gen games on your TV isn't anything revolutionary. Great review, nonetheless!
Not sure how youre going to review a product and leave out testing one of the main selling points. "I don't own a PC so I couldn't test it" isnt a valid excuse...
1) you don't own a pc to test on? Nor anyone else on this channel? What? 2) you don't need an internet connection to stream games from the PC. You're conflating 2 distinctly different services... there is GameStream and Nvidia Grid. GameStream just requires a network connection between the shield and the host PC, no internet necessary. Where as Nvidia Grid is a online game streaming service, for 8 bucks a month you have access to a collection of games that can be streamed from dedicated servers on the web (no pc required... you could have actually tested this, numb nuts). 3) When you DO stream games from your personal PC, there is one BIG caveat. You MUST have an Nvidia Geforce 600 series or newer card. This is because GameStream utilizes a hardware encoder that is built into the graphics card on the host computer (as opposed to Steam game streaming which uses software encoding). Without this you don't need it. This fact may forgive you for #1, since it not only needs a PC, but a PC with a newer Geforce card... of course #2 brings up the fact you could have tested the Grid games. And you also conflated 2 technologies... you're a technology journalist, don't do that, do your fucking homework.
+Nasir Jones Anyone looking into getting one it isnt a replacement or cant be compared to the ps4 or xbox one but its great for emulation and media(i own one)
In conclusion: if you've already spent money on a gaming pc but also want a console and a set top box, then this thing might be your best bet. However, if you want a console/set top box and don't already have a pc, just get an xbox one.
I just discovered this works for the shield TV. and thought you could use the info. www.amazon.com/underground app installs and works great with controller support. lots of good games for Free w/ free IAPs that run on the shield. like goat sim and space marshals,
"I don't own a PC." Who let this guy review this?
Some people prefer Macs instead

Wilco van Beijnum really tough on your internet

yes

Why is streaming games from PC for? If you have a game on PC you can play it on PC, so buying this device for gaming is pointless
Streaming games is more for party games or if you simply want to relax in a sofa whilst playing with a controller to get a console experience.

What game is he playing at 2:59 ?
You could use steam in home streaming on existing laptops etc
I wonder when the Shield 2 tablet will come with the x1
aussem9 LOL dont buy it, my shield tablet shuts off and off all the time, resets, gets really slow, and hot, and sometimes doesnt charge.
Alex xeon did you get one that was DOA
qwertyerthanyou LOL nope, it worked fine at first, oh and this has happened 2 times, im about to rma my third one and then sell the one they send me.
I'd rather have an X1 portable.

You can use grid from nvidias servers, not only your home pc
When using the service if you buy a game do you have to keep a subscription to use that game
Hey Lanh do you guys have a website?
Can i stream with a 16mbps internet conection on this box
i hope that some newer titles will come out to shield

Yes but whether they support the controller is down to the emulator
Love all your reviews! We have similar opinions it seems. Thnx
is nvidia shield support external hard drive
do i have to step up a account cant i just watch tv on it? wifi on it?
do you need a ANDROID TV for use?
No, the TV only needs an HDMI port.
What is the name of the song in background?
How do you install a VPN on this machine?

hi how can I hear surround 7.1 through headset on the nvidia shield tv?
should i get this or a ps4?
PS4
UttR Concrete
i posted this in september 2015 and i already got a ps4. thanks for the suggestion though!
Is there anyway to install linux or windows on this. Can you also root.
Dc vs Marvel Android is linux.
I think I'm gonna get this for PSP games
I'll probably just get a component cable for the PSP but I generally tend to lean towards original hardware
remote is also a touchpad where volume is
Does it have a gamepad mapper? Please respond! I really wanna know bcuz I wanna play roblox on my tv
This review is horrible

You will need a PC to stream games from your PC to the Nvida Shield, but not if you want to stream from the Grid Service.

Nuno Barreto no, you dont need a PC
can you alternative OS boot from micro sd or USB 3 flash drive?

1. Buy a 4K TV.
2. Buy a 4K Steaming device
3. Get 25mbps Internet
4. Find 4K content
You need all four to enjoy 4k.

kdinho1983 it is
This guy is amazing he uses the best phone in the world( Nexus 6) speaking of which I was gonna buy one but I brought Nexus 5 as it was to expensive, now its the same price!!!!
"The design isn't flashy". Really? Maybe if it was all flat and looked like a box it would have a nice design...
i bought mine for 100euro 😄 with the remote without the joystick
any good silent NAS to plug it with this media center ?
just go to pcpartpicker.com and search "nas".
He said he doesn't own a pc? Meaning he doesn't own a computer or he uses a Mac?
jeff hollaway He uses mac
Jonty Cawley-Graham Macs can run windows as well. And if his mac has a compatible nvidia GPU it could stream under windows.
XDerKleineX I'm aware. He said in the video though he couldn't test it so I'll take his word.
I LOVE MY ..JUST INSTALED XBMC ...BOOYA!!!!!!!:)))) 3 G RAM MAKES SO MUCH DIFERENCE
Why would someone who doesn't own a pc be allowed to review something thats main feature is to stream games from a pc????
"I dont own a PC"
has an mac in the background 0:24,0:56, 2:33, 4:58.
(yes mac IS a pc, just with a mac OS instead of Windows OS)
Might as well buy chromecast. Or
This looks good. Too bad I'd have to buy a new TV to use it cause, ya know, I got a CRT tv. :o
Ouch! :P
You can play Crysis 3 native on this thing, not streaming. If don't believe me RUclips search Nvidia press conference.
Need some help here please I have an HDD format for mac with mp4 1080p
DOES NVIDIA SHIELD TV SUPPORT PORTABLE EXTERNAL 1TB HDD MAC FORMANT (EXTENDED JOUNERAL) MY HDD IS POWER BY USB 3.0 ONLY...
if somebody knows about this question please let me know I'm planning buy a shield tv in a few days thank you ......
You dont need a PC or a 4K TV for GRID streaming. What was this guy smoking?
Wait you don't own a PC
4:20 wwwwhat You DON'T own a PC!!
This can run Crysis, Half Life and Doom natively. Why didn't you talk about those. And you don't need a PC for using Nvidia Grid. You need PC for PC streaming not Nvidia Grid streaming. This wasn't really a good review. Better luck next time.
you need to have PC to stream FROM the PC, not from the Grid.
Looking good
"Does not own PC". Shows Mac in background. I see why now.
Not sure how youre going to review a product and leave out testing one of the main selling points. "I don't own a PC so I couldn't test it" isnt a valid excuse...
$100 for a 500gig version is very expensive. 2tb hard drive cost $90 @ Best Buy. Just saying.....
If only we could root it and run custom roms :^[
It's anomaly 2 2:58
dose anyone else think he sounds like MKBHD
Someone try dolphin the gamecube emulator on it!
yoshimansxl they have look at free emulator's channel
Just buy chromecast cheap and easy to use.
Watching this on my shield ^_^
+Nasir Jones Anyone looking into getting one it isnt a replacement or cant be compared to the ps4 or xbox one but its great for emulation and media(i own one)
So shallow review! Oh my. Also you dont need a PC to use the GRID game streaming service... Thats kind of the point.
In conclusion: if you've already spent money on a gaming pc but also want a console and a set top box, then this thing might be your best bet. However, if you want a console/set top box and don't already have a pc, just get an xbox one.
culedood123 or just a long hdmi cable.....
Nathan Jones i guess you can do that too lol
culedood123 why it is like a dev machine for porting games like crysis 3 to the android platform with TX1
it is too expensive for what it does. It's almost the same price as a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox one
Omgf its no where near that price!!!!!
The Nvidia shield Pro is $299 I could add $100 to that I'm get a 1 TB Xbox one.
NVIDIA Shield outperforms the Xbox One.
buy an xbox one or ps4 instead. Same price as the pro. If this was 100$ i'd get it
I just discovered this works for the shield TV. and thought you could use the info. www.amazon.com/underground app installs and works great with controller support. lots of good games for Free w/ free IAPs that run on the shield. like goat sim and space marshals,
I really hate the reviews of this guy. Android Authority have some great reviewers but then come this guy and ruins everything
liked...subscribed!
Why review this when you DON*T OWN A PC!!??
great
