Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" Well it wasn't at a party but it was impressive. I grew up in the country so there weren't any neighbors close at all. Anyway, one night my brothers and I were outside burning trash in a 55 gallon drum. Many times the stuff in the bottom would not burn correctly and there would be unconsumed refuse left smoldering in the bottom. This particular night I thought I would try to get it to burn completely. We lit the fires using kerosene so I grabbed the can of kerosene and poured some onto the smoldering remains in the drum. It didn't ignite but did give off a copious amount of white smoke that formed a column about 30 feet high. Suddenly I got a bad idea and grabbed the lighter in my pocket and proceeded toward the barrel. I ducked down under the white smoke and exclaimed to my brothers "Watch this!" I held the lighter just inside the cloud and flicked my Bic. I heard WOOOOSH! and saw everything in the area become brightly lit followed by my brothers cheering and yelling "WOW!! That was cool!" This was shortly followed by my Dad, who was in the house watching television, coming out yelling "What the hell was that!?" Apparently he saw the flash inside as well. I explained what I did and without saying a word, he turned around and went back inside. I still remember that night clearly.
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" I've been making these since the mid 90's but with tuna cans which work wonderfully in place of Sterno's and I found that they can be used several times with just keeping the paraffin level full after say three uses :) I used two different size tuna cans one for the Sterno and the other for a cap to put it out to cool down once done using it.
Just have to say, I made a few and they are AWESOME! I will never go camping without a supply of these ever again! Super easy, Super cheap. and Super effective! Thank you TKOR Team!
I wouldn't recommend cooking anything directly over a flame when using wax for fuel, the wax vapor will condense on the food and you can definitely taste it... Great idea for a light source, or to heat a small pot/pan though! :)
I made these!! A couple of safety mods: I used snub-nosed pliers to crimp down the edge of the can... eliminating sharp edges. I also used OLD cooking grease (instead of wax) to soak my cardboard. This means you must leave the can in the fire, BUT you don't get any wax smell/taste in your food AND it's recycl-ish!!
When I made some of your fire logs I started wondering if I could use oil, so I put the cardboard in and instead of the wax I put some vegetable oil in and I found that it works great. Thank you for all of your videos.
So awesome just made one, Just tested it on the backside and thought it would be shit but it was really good! I mean when i tried to blow it out i nearly couldn't. Keep it up man!
Seriously Great work right? Reaaaally imaginative building a bigger candle with candles wow hooooow did they think of that. Just wow toooootally haven't done that in kindergarten. Really aaaaawesome right???
When I was little kid, I soaked up some wax with a paper hankerchief and made a cone out of it, which was maybe an inch high. When I set it on fire it first burnt like a candle, but then the flame got longer and longer until it was ridiculusly big. It scared the crap out of my parents and I was glad to have chosen a safe place for my experiment.
thank you for your video. these are great for camping, great for damp weather, and fun to make, my grandchildren love to get candles at garage sales, its a good weekend project for the boys. thank you again.
AWESOME! This has so many areas of use; backpacking, camping, survival situations. Thank you for sharing this Boy Scout trick of the trade with us in such an entertaining way. I will definitely try your design out!
I've watched a lot of prepper videos and found them to be bad comedy. You my man actually have a lot of useful information that is useful in emergency situations. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BROTHER!!!!
Yep, it's called a shooting star! First, stick a Starburst on the end of your stick. Then, hold it by the campfire. When the candy inevitably catches fire, panic and fling the flaming candy into the nearby bushes or group of friends. I just made this up.
Such a good idea! but such an old one...I learned this about forty years ago. Mind you It was on a larger scale, using jam cans or coffee cans, These were used to make emergency heaters for such occasions when you were, say, broken down in your car far from help? Or in a rainy or freezing situation where you needed a reliable fire. Thank you for posting this
M 11-year-old daughter got me hooked on your channel. We tried ninja balls last night- super easy and fun. She made a few for her friends. Thanks for the ideas.
I am a life-long camper and have my own little trick for getting fires going every time, plus a cool party trick. Using leftover dryer lint packed into egg cartons and pouring used candle wax over it you can get the same effect. The great part is the egg carton and the dryer lint are super easy to light and you can just break off the amount of fire starters you need right off the carton. Lights even when windy or wet! Now the party trick is way cooler I promise. Cut some old vinyl hose and 1 inch copper pipe into about one foot sections. When you have your fire burning hot you can stick one of the hose sections into the copper pipe and place it into the middle of your roaring fire. It will result in the coolest color display of chemical reactions for about an hour. It is supper pretty and a great conversation starter. The pipe is reusable once it has cooled down and for a longer display you can use a 2" or 3" pipe and stuff more than one hose in it. I'm not sure how this works but i do know you can't use a rubber hose; I tried and it was unsatisfying.
My favorite thing to do, grab a bunch of sparklers, 60 or so, and wrap them all up together with electrical tape, leaving one to stick out as a fuse, now just keep wrapping, going 3/4 of the way down the metal handles, use waaaayyy more tape than you think you'll need, particularly around the top and where the fuse enters. Light it up and run away! :D I've got a couple vids on my channel of it from a few years ago
Roasted starbursts actually taste amazing. You have it over the flame till you see it drip once, and then let it cool till you have a crunchy, chewy treat.
***** Would this make the yellow ones more sour? I love sour things (With the exception of warheads, which are just 9V battery candies) so if this makes them taste more sour, next I go camping I wanna try that.
I just made a mini version of this using the same concept. I removed the wax from a tea candle and filled the thin metal container with the coiled cardboard and then melted the wax and poured it in. So literately all you need is a tea candle and some cardboard to do this project. great idea!
Hahaha Very clever Grant at 2:12 you said "wait for it to cool and harden" and on the can its says "cool, hard, refreshing", CLEVER!!! Keep the videos comin.
geberlan Actually wax does vaporize when heated up near a flame. When the wax vaporizes, the flame heats it enough for the wax vapor to react with oxygen. Since wax is pretty much completely carbon and hydrogen chains, you just get water and carbon dioxide in the end.
Dont know how wax works, but paraphine (or whatever its spelled) the stuff that most candles are made of leaves a DISGUSTING smell and releases fumes you dont want near your food. I used this cartboard + paraphine candle multiple times, throwed it in my backpack after outdoor use, whole backpack stinked like crazy. So did my food after cooking it on fire like that. I rate this 2/10 would not recomend. Unless you use some magical wax and cartboard that burns up COMPLETLEY
now this brings back memories from South Africa i used to make them for when we used to go camping but we also used to make the polystyrene in petrol turning it into a gel 5 minute burning time on them
LMFAO This tip is stupid, you can just use oil instead of candles, it's cheaper and easier, but it will give off some smoke, you'll know if you've burned oil before. You could actually use any type of fuel that burns slow like the tiki torch fluid, or rubbing alcohol, or anything like that. Almost anything fatty/greasy would work, just keep in mind, the smoke that comes off it might be toxic and you might not want to roast food over it. The only reason to use wax would be to be for storing, or if you plan on putting it out and then reusing it, since it'll be less messy.
i did much experiments as kid with wax. and i found out that you can use it to easily make torches or something yourself, pretty awesome how much fun experimenting like this can be. and how usefull. (yeah already everyone knows about this, but i didn't know as kid) i love your channel, some things you can really use for fun and to expand your outdoor or usefull gear.
FANTASTIC! I just had major trouble the other day trying to start a fire. It was super muggy which made it difficult on damp logs. It will never eerk me again.
this really is an amazing idea. I built an upside down fire with only split logs stacked 3 across and 4 layers high. The stack of logs was rip roaring in about 7 to 10 minutes
Thanx Grant! I've made it in different sizes and other types of containers so it will burn much longer!. It's btw a nice decoration for parties! greetings from Rotterdam!
We threw a couple of old recliners and a wicker chair on a fire a couple weeks back. Man did they go up quick and burn hot! Wasn't much left afterward except a few charred springs. Also we threw a lighter in the fire that night looked pretty awesome when it exploded. Kids, don't try these things at home. You could get seriously hurt. We took several precautions before acting dumb.
Love your vids! you can also make a firestarter using a cardboard egg carton, dryer lint and crayons and/or old candles. Stuff the depressions (where the eggs were) with as much dryer lint as possible. After the carton is full of lint, melt the wax and pour the wax over the lint until the lint cannot absorb any more wax, let dry and you have 1 dozen fire starters! When ready for use, break off one (egg depression) light, and you have a 30-45 minutes of burn time. Dryer lint, who would have thought? I like the canned one also, as it has more uses!
Thanks this is awesome, my family and I are planning to roast s'mores soon and I'm looking forward to making the s'mores roaster. Thanks again for all the awesome videos you put up I watch them all!
I really enjoy your videos. some construction tips would be cool as well. like using a cheap kitchen mixer for powdered drywall mud. you can mix it right in the mud pan and get the maximum working time even if you are using a fast set ie: 20 minute mud. and if you end up toasting the mixer (mine has lasted 5 years so far) you can just put the mixing paddle in your drill and it works well.
I remember convincing my mum to make this with a tuna can once so I could take it to a friend's BBQ. It worked brilliantly for lighting the charcoal. This definitely is nostalgia speaking but man do I miss those days in the early 2010's...
Use to make these with tuna cans in Boy Scouts back in the late 60's, We called them Buddy Buners and one can heat a quart of water in 30 minutes and reusable for a whole weekend.
just finished making one of my own, and so far its chilling out in the freezer. To anyone else who tries this, don't use a pot. Thankfully I used a very old and very crappy pan to do this, but still ruined one. Use a grill or your oven instead, or if you must use a pot, line it with aluminum foil first, trust me. EDIT: Just burned mine, and it lasted for two hours. Amazing!
Awesome, thanks! If they don't start right away or easy ( I haven't done it so I don't know yet) u can dip ur homemade wick in a touch of lighter fluid or alcohol before applying wax. Got that from another u tube site.
you could also probably use a candle that keeps away bugs if you have some extra wax from one of them instead of the regular wax and it could be used for keeping away the bugs
Were you roasting...Starburst?
NightHawkInLight Yes he was, my friend!
It's yummy tho
NightHawkInLight he was roasting candy
+NightHawkInLight You bet he was
Seriously wtf?..

u can also use a tuna can
2:55 "coolest thing I've tried all day" he says as he roasts Starbursts over an open flame.
Roasted starbursts are a thing apparently
Just have to say, I made a few and they are AWESOME! I will never go camping without a supply of these ever again! Super easy, Super cheap. and Super effective! Thank you TKOR Team!

That awesome moment when you know both channels!
Anukrit Lamichhane ya its awesome
Seriously, i said this in two of smg4's videos and im saying it now, someone famous watches someone famous.... i call it RUclips Vigilance
Instead of cutting up soda cans, try using tuna cans, they're pre-sized!
Donald Zimmerman thanks
! he probably used cans just for sponspers
tin (meltin'pot) = 233°C
alluminium(meltin'pot)= 660.3°C
Dud it was sponsored he had to
CarBoy Tuna cans are not made of tin.
So awesome just made one, Just tested it on the backside and thought it would be shit but it was really good! I mean when i tried to blow it out i nearly couldn't. Keep it up man!
Awesome feedback! Thanks :)

+강남훈 lol, maybe you should cut down in those extra letters...
+RBC PRODUCTIONS On the backside? Man, that must burn!
I followed what you said and made about 30 of these, got them saved in the shed in the backyard, they work great. :D

Thanks NorthSurvival. Looks like you have a fan club! :)
I have seen the same idea years ago but with shoe polish tins as casings
Hey NorthSurvival! what you doin here?
Really cool Grant! I need to make a few for my 72hr kits.

Did... did you just roast _Starburst_?
I have to try this now. New worlds of culinary delight have been opened to me.
I've watched a lot of prepper videos and found them to be bad comedy. You my man actually have a lot of useful information that is useful in emergency situations. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BROTHER!!!!

I just made this up.
Dangit_Bobby that is hilarious XD
Just about to say that!
I might try to eat a roasted -flaming- starburst.

It all belongs to you ;)
I'm here on my computer too!
Me too!
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random"
I guess that's where you find parts of your fine ideas ;)
This is the best thing I've seen in a while and it actually works great
Congrats.. you just made a candle out of candles
but . . how do i start the grill to melt the candles to make the thing to start the grill . . .
David Schaefer No. He combined Candles to make an upgraded Candle with high flame
David Schaefer Congrats try using the candles melted to make the fire then
I am a life-long camper and have my own little trick for getting fires going every time, plus a cool party trick.

Awww my video got flagged as inappropriate and removed, now I've got one of three warning strikes :( I meant no harm...
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" this is amazing im gonna have to try this, i've already done a few others of your experiments
cmon man. pls melt some sand on that solar burner. this will produce molten glass. make a RANDOM Sand melting project.
Great idea, dude!! You surely have got some stuff...@:-D
Get a life
2:50 why are you roasting starbursts? I think they would drip down into a molten puddle unsuitable for eating.
Roasted starbursts actually taste amazing. You have it over the flame till you see it drip once, and then let it cool till you have a crunchy, chewy treat.
Don't forget...he's called "The King of _Random._"
Daniel Yu Hmm. Well actually I think my little brother would love that! He loves starbursts. He likes crunchy things. So why not? :)
Thesnakerox oh yeah! He IS veeeeerrrrryyyyy random.
***** Would this make the yellow ones more sour?
I love sour things (With the exception of warheads, which are just 9V battery candies) so if this makes them taste more sour, next I go camping I wanna try that.

Rip the King of Random.. 😥
If you couldnt get the fire started in the first place, how did u get the candles to heat up for the wax to melt?
You make them ahead of time, that's how.
Anybody think he was putting marshmallows in the can when they were candles?
yeah lol
me
Me
yes...
Yep me too
I am 8 years old and go camping a lot with mom,I can't wait to use this since we have a hard time when cooking .

Hahaha Very clever Grant at 2:12 you said "wait for it to cool and harden" and on the can its says "cool, hard, refreshing", CLEVER!!! Keep the videos comin.
Won't there be wax residue and smell with fumes on the things you cook?
geberlan Actually wax does vaporize when heated up near a flame. When the wax vaporizes, the flame heats it enough for the wax vapor to react with oxygen. Since wax is pretty much completely carbon and hydrogen chains, you just get water and carbon dioxide in the end.
You can take it out after the charcoals are ready, I doesn't really change the taste if you do that.
KSSyu13 wow thx

You would start the wood or coal with the candle and let the wax burn off before putting food on it
Mike-Ro fire pit

That's what I said
+FaZe Scarce No, spiralbeast said it :D

My sponsor-supported study shows otherwise...
ok
Or you could listen to the first 30 seconds of the video 🤷♂️
how can I melt the wax if I cant even start a fire!
Tube of chips
LMFAO This tip is stupid, you can just use oil instead of candles, it's cheaper and easier, but it will give off some smoke, you'll know if you've burned oil before.

(yeah already everyone knows about this, but i didn't know as kid) i love your channel, some things you can really use for fun and to expand your outdoor or usefull gear.
there is a "smoke pond" in the middle. When you blow it out it is so cool thanks Grant.
i made 5 of these and put them in pumpkins for halloween! thanks! :-)
+jonas bay nice hack
waita minute...u melt candles to make candles?
V Tran
well you can hack it, use wax from previous candle,
Cooking marshmallows on wax flame? That must taste repulsive...
These work so well. You could also use a Tuna Tin candle. The perfect size instead of cutting down a drinks can.
FANTASTIC! I just had major trouble the other day trying to start a fire. It was super muggy which made it difficult on damp logs. It will never eerk me again.

***** thanks
ugh...I don't have the materials to make this....but after watching this video I want a smore
This would be something great to take camping & it might be a good idea to store one in a survival pack too!
Thanx Grant! I've made it in different sizes and other types of containers so it will burn much longer!. It's btw a nice decoration for parties!
greetings from Rotterdam!
Idiot tip, dont use parrafin wax to start fire for food or even use for rosting something. Doesnt taste good and its extremly unhealthy.
I was thinking the same thing, who uses wax to start fires for food?
Those filthy only once a month weekend grillers who have a weber grill and think that makes them the most pro grillers on the planet :D
Siltwarrior lol
Or the aluminium/plastic coating on the can
Siltwarrior No thanks I think I'll to stick to my clean burning propane.
Near the end.. Did he just try to cook... Starburst?
WexfordGamingNetwork It's amazing. you should try it.
Lord GabeN GabeN , if i try them will you confirm Half life 3?
WexfordGamingNetwork sure.
I thought that the candles were marshmallows at first
ikr
me too
+Sumukh Ms u can make a candle with a marshmallow
So did I lol
Daniel Villalva same
Anyone else see this classic and just come to watch it to hear him teach again??
Grant is such a likeable guy.
My cousin made home made explosives
Nice idea but those marshmallows will be tainted with parafin fumes now
2:51 why are you roasting starbursts.

I like how you were roasting Starburst at the end. That's something I would do. Hahaha!
I blew up a trash can with my friends
artix tran you dont have friends
FancyCaterpillar I agree
who cares
At a party I had something that stood out...
A fart, a fart stood out
you do not use it to cook food because the wax is toxic !!!!
personal experience
What about crayons???Non-toxic!!!
about crayons i don't know but the candles' wax is toxic, it does the black smoke
its not toxic trust me
it is a derivative of petroleum
I really enjoy your videos. some construction tips would be cool as well. like using a cheap kitchen mixer for powdered drywall mud. you can mix it right in the mud pan and get the maximum working time even if you are using a fast set ie: 20 minute mud. and if you end up toasting the mixer (mine has lasted 5 years so far) you can just put the mixing paddle in your drill and it works well.
my son and I are going to make these and hand them out to the homeless so they will have something to keep them warm thank you so much for your videos
My uncle was grilling and he made the flame touch the trees!!!!!!🔥🌲🔥🌲🔥🌲🔥🌲🔥🌲🔥🌲🔥🌲🔥🌲🔥
its a buddy burner, been around for a long time... but still like the class you add to all your videos :)
The Mike Hacks series is my favorite of them all. RIP Grant...
just finished making one of my own, and so far its chilling out in the freezer.
Got that from another u tube site.
you could also probably use a candle that keeps away bugs if you have some extra wax from one of them instead of the regular wax and it could be used for keeping away the bugs
you can also make it with oil(i use used olive oil), or a mix of wax and oil so when its cooled the wax stays on top preventing the oi from spilling.
