    WARNING:
    Do not use indoors. An open flame poses a fire hazard. Do not use near any flammable or explosive material. Cutting aluminum cans will give the metal very sharp edges. Sharp edges cut skin. You may want to use gloves to mitigate any risk. This project should not be attempted without adult supervision and adequate training. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

    Boy scouts! My dad was the scout leader, and showed me how to make something similar to this when I was a kid, out of cardboard and a tuna can. We called them "buddy burners" and used them for camping.
    Project History & More Info:
    During boy a boy scout activity, my dad showed us how to make a cool project called a “buddy burner”.
    We'd take an empty tuna can, fill it with rolled up cardboard, and soak the whole thing in wax to make a small portable fire, or fire-starter that would burn for an impressive amount of time.
    When a beverage company approached me and asked what I could do as a life-hack with some of their packaging, this was one of the ideas that came to mind.
    I adapted the cans to work in lieu of a tuna can, and used the cardboard from the packaging rolled up inside, then melted candles and poured the was in the can.
    How this works, is that the cardboard acts as a wick, and as it burns, it melts the wax, soaks it up through the cardboard, vaporizes it, and burns it as fuel.
    The top of the cardboard will burn, but the rest of the cardboard under the wax line will not burn until all the wax is used up.
    Amazing, these burned for over an hour each. And while they can start BBQ briquettes, I found that the coals eventually get so hot they will melt the aluminum. So tuna cans would be a better choice, but soda cans can work as well. They are also lightweight, easy to make, and great for any survival kit or day pack.

      Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" Well it wasn't at a party but it was impressive. I grew up in the country so there weren't any neighbors close at all. Anyway, one night my brothers and I were outside burning trash in a 55 gallon drum. Many times the stuff in the bottom would not burn correctly and there would be unconsumed refuse left smoldering in the bottom. This particular night I thought I would try to get it to burn completely. We lit the fires using kerosene so I grabbed the can of kerosene and poured some onto the smoldering remains in the drum. It didn't ignite but did give off a copious amount of white smoke that formed a column about 30 feet high. Suddenly I got a bad idea and grabbed the lighter in my pocket and proceeded toward the barrel. I ducked down under the white smoke and exclaimed to my brothers "Watch this!" I held the lighter just inside the cloud and flicked my Bic. I heard WOOOOSH! and saw everything in the area become brightly lit followed by my brothers cheering and yelling "WOW!! That was cool!" This was shortly followed by my Dad, who was in the house watching television, coming out yelling "What the hell was that!?" Apparently he saw the flash inside as well. I explained what I did and without saying a word, he turned around and went back inside. I still remember that night clearly.

      Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" I've been making these since the mid 90's but with tuna cans which work wonderfully in place of Sterno's and I found that they can be used several times with just keeping the paraffin level full after say three uses :) I used two different size tuna cans one for the Sterno and the other for a cap to put it out to cool down once done using it.

    I wouldn't recommend cooking anything directly over a flame when using wax for fuel, the wax vapor will condense on the food and you can definitely taste it...
    Great idea for a light source, or to heat a small pot/pan though! :)

    When I was little kid, I soaked up some wax with a paper hankerchief and made a cone out of it, which was maybe an inch high. When I set it on fire it first burnt like a candle, but then the flame got longer and longer until it was ridiculusly big. It scared the crap out of my parents and I was glad to have chosen a safe place for my experiment.

  • @zanyzanne
    @zanyzanne 8 лет назад +4

    I made these!! A couple of safety mods: I used snub-nosed pliers to crimp down the edge of the can... eliminating sharp edges. I also used OLD cooking grease (instead of wax) to soak my cardboard. This means you must leave the can in the fire, BUT you don't get any wax smell/taste in your food AND it's recycl-ish!!

    I am a life-long camper and have my own little trick for getting fires going every time, plus a cool party trick. Using leftover dryer lint packed into egg cartons and pouring used candle wax over it you can get the same effect. The great part is the egg carton and the dryer lint are super easy to light and you can just break off the amount of fire starters you need right off the carton. Lights even when windy or wet! Now the party trick is way cooler I promise. Cut some old vinyl hose and 1 inch copper pipe into about one foot sections. When you have your fire burning hot you can stick one of the hose sections into the copper pipe and place it into the middle of your roaring fire. It will result in the coolest color display of chemical reactions for about an hour. It is supper pretty and a great conversation starter. The pipe is reusable once it has cooled down and for a longer display you can use a 2" or 3" pipe and stuff more than one hose in it. I'm not sure how this works but i do know you can't use a rubber hose; I tried and it was unsatisfying.

    My favorite thing to do, grab a bunch of sparklers, 60 or so, and wrap them all up together with electrical tape, leaving one to stick out as a fuse, now just keep wrapping, going 3/4 of the way down the metal handles, use waaaayyy more tape than you think you'll need, particularly around the top and where the fuse enters. Light it up and run away! :D I've got a couple vids on my channel of it from a few years ago

    We used to make these with tuna cans in Girl Scouts and called them Buddy Burners. We would take a larger can (like a coffee can) and from the top open side of the can cut a rectangle piece off of one side so that when the can was upside down the buddy burner would slide inside. The bottom of the can was up and became the cooking surface because it would get hot from the buddy burner inside. We would adjust the temperature by sliding the buddy burner in and out of the "stove". We cooked pancakes on it. Supposedly you could put a cake mix in a small can and then cover it with a larger can to make an oven on top of the stove, but I remember the cake tasted like smoke - yuck.

      Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" A summer night project I learned from a friend: We had old white t-shirts for the kids to wear. They put them out on the grass and took glow sticks that were glowing. We clipped the end of the stick off so the liquid inside could be used to draw on the t-shirts. Some of the kids just did glowing splatter art on the shirts, but you have to be careful because the inside tube is made of glass and we didn't want any glass shards to come out and get stepped on. They had bright glowing shirts to run around outside with. We took this idea to the beach with us and did t-shirts on the beach as well. Again we were careful with the glass. When we were finished you could see glowing spots on the sand where they missed their t-shirt. We told people it was where the aliens had landed :)

    Such a good idea! but such an old one...I learned this about forty years ago. Mind you It was on a larger scale, using jam cans or coffee cans, These were used to make emergency heaters for such occasions when you were, say, broken down in your car far from help? Or in a rainy or freezing situation where you needed a reliable fire. Thank you for posting this

      LMFAO This tip is stupid, you can just use oil instead of candles, it's cheaper and easier, but it will give off some smoke, you'll know if you've burned oil before.
      You could actually use any type of fuel that burns slow like the tiki torch fluid, or rubbing alcohol, or anything like that. Almost anything fatty/greasy would work, just keep in mind, the smoke that comes off it might be toxic and you might not want to roast food over it.
      The only reason to use wax would be to be for storing, or if you plan on putting it out and then reusing it, since it'll be less messy.

    Won't there be wax residue and smell with fumes on the things you cook?

    • @KSSyu13
      @KSSyu13 9 лет назад +2

      geberlan Actually wax does vaporize when heated up near a flame. When the wax vaporizes, the flame heats it enough for the wax vapor to react with oxygen. Since wax is pretty much completely carbon and hydrogen chains, you just get water and carbon dioxide in the end.

      Dont know how wax works, but paraphine (or whatever its spelled) the stuff that most candles are made of leaves a DISGUSTING smell and releases fumes you dont want near your food. I used this cartboard + paraphine candle multiple times, throwed it in my backpack after outdoor use, whole backpack stinked like crazy. So did my food after cooking it on fire like that. I rate this 2/10 would not recomend. Unless you use some magical wax and cartboard that burns up COMPLETLEY

    • @33rokkin
      @33rokkin 5 лет назад

      You would start the wood or coal with the candle and let the wax burn off before putting food on it

    We threw a couple of old recliners and a wicker chair on a fire a couple weeks back. Man did they go up quick and burn hot! Wasn't much left afterward except a few charred springs. Also we threw a lighter in the fire that night looked pretty awesome when it exploded. Kids, don't try these things at home. You could get seriously hurt. We took several precautions before acting dumb.

    The Buddy Burner is an actual portable stove and meant to be reusable to provide light heat, cooking and boiling. Mostly for hobos who don't have a hobo stove. To light a bbq all you need is balls of newspaper soaked in parafin. In certain cases you can use tight rolled up plastic bags. They burn well.

    Girl Scouts have been making and using these for YEARS and only now people are finding out about them? 😂 We call them buddy burners and typically use them like a mini makeshift stovetop burner to cook a pan of eggs, bacon, maybe toast/pancakes, etc.
    Never thought of using it as a fire starter though. Definitely trying that at camp if we can't get our campfires to light 😅

    One of these things the size of a tea light burns, in ideal conditions, for 30 minutes!
    Conveniently, not only does it need very little cardboard, but you can take the tea light out of the case, put the cardboard in the case, and pour the molten tea light in with wax to spare!
    Whipping them up in bulk would allow for easy mass storage, and you would just accumulate left over wax as you make them!

    Take a piece of copper pipe cut to about 1 ft and large enough to fit regular garden hose inside. Cut a piece of scrap garden hose 1 ft as well. Drill holes through the copper pipe on all sides roughly 1/4” in diameter and spaced an inch apart. Place garden hose inside and place the whole thing in the camp fire down in the misdle. Instant rainbow campfire for 20 minutes - just don’t eat over it after.
