    Regarding the Raoul overacting thing, honestly I just think that Raoul is endearingly dramatic. This can be seen in the book too. Maybe I'm just biased because I love Hadley Fraser to bits, but oh well.

      Honestly I found Hadley Fraser to be overreacting throughout the entire thing, I can’t even really watch this concert now because his portrayal of Raoul bothers me so much (you can see why they never hired him for a run after that 🙈). Having read the book I think Raoul is always over acted because that's very much how he is in the book. I pretty much said this to my tv as I was watching. A lot of the characters are toned way down in the musical but none more than Raoul who is a lot more smooth and calm than he was in the book. I mean, some of his first words are "I AM THE LITTLE

      I kind of disagree, I’ve definitely seen at least two actors play Raoul in a likable way (one being in the 2004 film, Patrick Wilson was by far my favorite part of that). I feel like the story of LND has affected the way the character tends to be played.

      That’s not true, of course we are supposed to favour Raoul. He is kind, supports Christine (I know there’s that time when he didn’t believe her about the Phantom but...wouldn’t you be the same?! Plus once he finds out he is really there he does everything in his power to protect Christine), is emotionally and financially stable, is in his prime, is handsome... Meanwhile the Phantom is literally a serial killer, old enough to be Christine’s father, is a gaslighter/abuser who sees her as a “thing” (not a a person) and has a huge catalogue of mental problems. Now I know he’s been treated like shit his whole life and I do feel compassion for that, but he’s still not remotely relationship material. Also his actions in LND basically get Christine killed so there’s that.

    The lyrics were actually changed decades ago! I’ve seen footage of Sarah Brightman singing them and they also used them for the movie, but you can go back to the 90’s and the Christines on Broadway and West End are using these lyrics. They also raised the key which makes the high note a C6. For some reason voice teachers still use the original lyrics and key. Raoul being dramatic is intentional, they mention it in the documentary and you can see the other characters telling him to quiet down. He’s supposed to be a rich arrogant snob, Hadley Fraser even tweeted about them putting eyeliner on him for this. You should definitely react to Steve Barton, the original Raoul, singing All I Ask of You with Sarah Brightman. He sadly passed away, but he was the most amazing baritone and he played Raoul with subtlety. Not saying Hadley isn’t fantastic, but if you want a romantic Raoul who’s not an overdramatic diva, Steve Barton’s your guy. Andrew Lloyd Webber heavily favors Ramin Karimloo so the audience is going to be leaned towards The Phantom here, they even changed the ending. In the original production it was more evenly balanced.

    • @RileyKmusic
      @RileyKmusic 4 года назад +6

      Melissa McDonald I know he originally wanted JOJ, but the dynamic and ending was changed because Sierra and Ramin did Love Never Dies together. Andrew speaks highly of Ramin in the rehearsals of the filming for the DVD, they also specifically chose and wrote the LND songs for Ramin, asked him to be in the Australian DVD which he declined , and they used his photo as Christine’s father in the Phantom film. Andrew also let Ramin change the melody of a line in the Phantom score. From what I know Cameron Mackintosh really got Ramin into a lot, but he’s definitely a favorite. I couldn’t say who Andrew’s personal favorite is, just that of the videos I’ve seen he praises Ramin the most.

    One of the only musical theatre bright spots from this COVID business is that so many amazing broadway stars have been accessible teaching master classes via Zoom. My daughter had the opportunity to sing for Sierra Boggess during a zoom session and get feedback. My daughter had just found out two of her shows had been canceled. Ms. Boggess was extremely kind and gave her incredible feedback. She’s a true class act and so extremely talented. Since she’s a redhead, Ariel is my daughter’s favorite role and she’s been a Sierra Boggess fan for quite some time. It was nice to give my daughter a little bit of musical theatre happiness during these times when shows aren’t happening.
    Thank you for addressing diction! I’ve seen shows-especially when music is written for sopranos-where this isn’t addressed and it’s nearly impossible to understand what is being sung. As these were community or high school productions, the “fault” lies with the director and/or the music director. Beginners in theatre don’t know about the importance unless they’re taught (or they see your videos!).

      For sopranos, it goes to about a Bb5 or a C6, depending on the key. The highest note most trained coloratura sopranos can get up to is about an F6 or F#6. The highest note Christine sings in Phantom is about an E6. She’s supposed to be a coloratura soprano. Even still, I’ve read that a lot of the Christines record that E6.

    I tried this song (years ago) and practiced it for 2wks thinking that my vocal chords would be stronger. Interestingly enough, I hit the notes after physical work outs and running. I think that breathing has a lot to do with it and a good amount of water therapy (for me). I’m not sure how, but the breathing techniques that I get from physical work outs gave me the perfect rhythm and the different responses of my body on how to catch air. Again, that’s just me.

Maybe only Christine hears it, or perhaps the entire stage reacts slightly, cowering, but it gives Christine strength and she shows her true talent. A way of showing that the Phantom is always there and listening and wishes for her career to progress, reminding her that he's there for- and believes in her.

    This took me back to my singing days and my 4ft 10in - 95 lb vocal coach absolutely nailing this song despite looking like a stiff breeze would knock her over. She always told me to look down on those high notes, don't reach up for them. Sadly, I don't sing as much as I used to, and my lazy behind wants to insist I'm an alto now (instead of actually putting in the work to be the soprano I am), but I deeply enjoy your reaction videos and your insights on musical theatre.

    I love her performance. As for the comment about her reacting to the theater owners' reactions in the beginning, I don't totally disagree with your comment about maybe having the character react to their comments but for me, this is when the change comes over her and she is overtaken with the music and isn't singing for anyone else but herself and her teacher (Phantom) at this point and is just lost in the performance. :-) This is my all-time favorite play. There are some close seconds. I was blessed to see Yul Brynner in the King and I, Donald O'Connor in Showboat, etc. back in the 80s. I saw Phantom with Michael Crawford in LA but never Sarah Brightman. I have seen it probably 10 times over the years, lol, and Sierra is amazing.

    Hi! I just recently came across your channel and enjoy your videos. I'll apologize in advance, I think my comment is going to be somewhat of a ramble. First, Sierra Boggess, doesn't get any better. I have a feeling she is Andrew Lloyd Weber's favorite Christine, well maybe 2nd favorite after his ex wife. He hand picked Sierra for the performance you showed which is from the 25th anniversary gala in London, and Weber and Bogess have done several RUclips videos together. Bogess with Ramin Karimloo together in Phanton is pure perfection - plus Karimloo is very easy on the eyes :) When Boggess did Phantom on Broadway she did a vlog for Broadway.com where her personality is on full display. What I find interesting after hearing her talk so much in the vlogs, is that her singing voice was a surprise to me, her speaking voice seems much lower and often a bit raspy and yet her singing voice is brilliant - I just find that interesting. I would love to see Boggess play Eliza in Hamilton. I agree with your "over acting" comment about Raul. I watched an interesting documentary on the making of Phantom (original London and Broadway productions) - the legendary Hal Prince directed and he was such a controlling person, I have to imagine he directed Raul in that over acting style, but it always strikes me as overdone. Another great performance of "Think of me" is from the film, Emmy Rossum was only 16 when it was filmed, I thought she was brilliant, but studio work is studio work and can't really be compared to live theater.

      Timothy Ward I do wish Sierra had been in more shows, her resume is very much dominated by Phantom/Disney but she has such versatility. I did hear she auditioned for My Fair Lady on Broadway but didn’t get it ☹️ She is really good at Rodgers & Hammerstein so I hope she is cast in Sound of Music or South Pacific at some point in the not too distant future. Unfortunately I don’t see her being cast as Eliza as Hamilton seems to favour casting non-white actors.
      And yeah, Andrew has more or less called her one of his top favourite Christines. He also said he would marry her if given the chance ( 😒😣😓)

  • @sugarbaby1974
    @sugarbaby1974 2 года назад

    You're correct, the lyrics have been changed. The lyrics have gone through multiple incarnations, even tiny ones, since it's original run in London. Richard Stilgoe, wrote most of the original lyrics for the production. Charles Hart later rewrote many of the lyrics, along with original lyrics for Think of Me and he has confessed to futzing with the lyrics to most of the "big" songs nearly every time it's been revamped (i.e., new production, new direction, restaging, etc.) to achieve the perfection that matches the music (his words, not mine). I saw PotO over 30 years ago on a school trip in Toronto (with original Canadian Phantom, Colm Wilkinson, and yes, he was entrancing) where I bought the libretto with making-of information, still have it, and many of the lyrics have been changed over the years. Same with the title song, Wishing You Were Here Again (it used to end like the original London cast recording, with the single, quiet "let me say goodbye" and not the bombastic second "let me say goodBYYYYEEEEEE" that it is now; I personally prefer the quiet, sad ending), Music of the Night, Past the Point of No Return. I think the only one that hasn't been changed is Masquerade, at least not in any versions I've seen so far.
