  • ND7Y Scored some permits for a hike up Mount Saint Helens. This was my first time doing the summer route along Monitor Ridge. Very cool to see the mountain a different way. This hike is about 2 miles shorter compared to the winter route. After hitting the crater rim, it was about a half mile hike to the Activation Zone and True Summit.
On summit we made a plethora of 2m contacts (20 total) and then setup HF where I got another 17 contacts on SSB and CW. Thank you chasers for making this a memorable outing!
The descent offered some nice scree-skiing to speed us down the mountain.

I was 13 year old kid who happened to be in Northern Oregon in May 1980, watching the ash plume of the St. Helens eruption in the distance. What an awesome adventure to activate the volcano for SOTA!

I can only imagine what seeing it in person must've been like. A former coworker gifted me a small jar of MSH eruption ash. Neat thing to have.

It was kind of a surreal background for what was, at the time, a more engaging activity of plinking tin cans off the back fence with a .22 - if it were to happen today I would actually stop to watch the geologic spectacle unfolding, probably. 😂

Fun video. Glad I was able to get you guys. And I’m taking credit for the cross mode QSO you had with Peter. He said on Slack that he didn’t have a mic and I said just cross-mode it dude 😂

Great idea using trekking poles to support your mast. I hadn't thought of that but I am going to use it.

Great hike and activation!!! I had to laugh when the guy sent you CW over SSB!! That’s certainly a great way to get thru!!!
And when he sent you a 33.. I was sitting here wondering what an ‘S-M’ meant. Then I realized it was 33!! Lol

Peter is great and one of my top chasers. He didn't have a mic hooked up to his radio, so just went for it! Super fun!

It was an awesome day Tim! I don't care what anyone says, the boulder field (up _and_ down) is worse than the ash at the top. Thanks for not leaving me behind in the dust (literally)! 😂

Great stuff! I’m also going to keep that idea about a tripod for my mast in the back of my mind. I’m working with the idea of a PVC plumbing pipe length to put between my two hiking poles to make a 4m mast to hold the apex of an inverted vee.
It’s sad to see how small the glaciers are but you can see all the work they did shaping the landscape!
