What happened was the condensation from the one pound tank left on there leaked while you had it in the box, that's the corrosion underneath. That condensation is actually a layer of propane, it ignited and the flames were from that. Never leave empty cannisters like that connected. Very good video, thank you.
That could be possible, however it was an empty tank to begin with, I felt like it might leak out the other side, so when I put the 20 pound tank connected with the filter, I put an empty bottle on the other side so it wouldn't leak, however, that is not to say there wasn't some residual stuff because it di dust on that side. I will do a better job this year with the new one I replaced it with for storage this year. Yes I so agree, I could have done better. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week. Again, thank you, I think you may well be correct on what caused the blow up, there was definitely a lot of residual and or a leak. Thank you and I Hope you have a blessed week. Dale
@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors The empty tank you put on, is a sweat collector, it would constantly build up moisture over time inside the metal cylinder, due to being warm, then cold then warm etc. When you then stored it, the moisture has a path to all the gas tubes during storage, because the bottle is screwed into the full on/open position. So that moisture then leached out & rusted everything, is what I think, especially having been well stored back in the foam & plastic bag, inside a box, that moisture had no where to go. If you feel better having the second bottle on there, when you run the 20 pounder, leave a full one on there, & store it with nothing connected. Glad I saw your story, take care.
PS: Being a sealed gas line, the built up sweat in the empty bottle would/will never be able to get out of those sealed gas lines, until it rots them, regardless of your great storage efforts.
Mr buddy sells specific hose for the 20lb tank that is oil free But, always, disconnect all bottles and hoses prior to storing it. Never store these heaters with bottles attached. Good lesson learned and shared. Thanks.
Thank you, yes sir, I have never had an issue like this one and wanted to share it folks, the colder it gets, the more folks will be using them. Thank you and have a blessed weekend. Dale
Where is the hose sold? I have some from amazon that are recommended for these heaters. I have 3. I think it is time to replace them. I may return them, the should last longer than 2 yrs stored in my garage which is temp controlled.
Being a former volunteer firefighter, ive learned to make sure that i do my first light up of my buddy heater, that i do it outside away from everything. Accidents happen and im very happy that nothing serious happened to you! Quick thinking on your part! Keep up the great videos bud!
Yes sir, I guess I got complacent, thinking they would just always work. I do agree, it should be done outside, just in case. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week my friend. Dale
Hello Dale, I am from Ohio, I camp quite a bit throughout the year, and I just watched your video. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate coming across this extremely important information! I am currently in the process of researching portable propane heaters and am very interested in purchasing this particular Buddy heater. Because of your thoughtfulness to post your experience, I learned so much from you and your other viewers comments. I feel more confident now to purchase and use this product as a result. Thank you so much and God bless you!
Thank you so very much for taking the time to watch and comment. I replaced the bad one with a new one and had a great two week camping in the cold trip. I also used it all winter in my shop. This year. I will check that one out good. I am sure my previous one was a fluke. Who knows. Thanks again my friend and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale. Keep us posted on your adventures.
Good video. Two things I have gleaned from your video, one remove the 1 lb cylinder when storing. Secondly, check out the equipment in a safe location. Thanks for sharing. I also live behind the Pine Curtain where the humidity is high.
Thank you so much for the kind words my friend. Those where the two points I tried to stress and I am glad you enjoyed this video. Thank you so very much and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale.
I'm at 8000' in the Rockies and have the same heater here as a backup to my wood stove on sub zero nights on a 100 pound bottle. In 10 years with the same heater I've yet to have any issue other than a ceramic panel.
That is fantastic news my friend. I can also say from my parents owning a cabin around the same elevation near Salina many years back before my mom passed, that is was much drier there and I can see the lower humidity helping in keeping it running better this humidity here is something I am still learning to deal with. Thank you for sharing this with us and I think I mentioned, even the less humidity in Oklahoma, I have never had an issue like this for me either. Thank you and I Hope you have a blessed weekend. dale
This is the kind of service I got at plus 6500 ft in the Bush of Alaska Mantanuska range. Now they're failing left n wright down here in the USA NW mountains. Just barely above 3000' snowline. I think their quality has gone to shit. Just opened two new boxes of Buddies to prep for the coming winter. Won't light and continue to burn. Tested with fresh one pounder. I"m pissed. Dandahermit
Very helpful video. I’m wanting to buy one of these heaters to use indoors for emergency power outages and received lots of helpful advice. I like the comment to try starting it outside to test it before bringing it in, and if it runs weird like you said, don’t ignore that! I will store it in the house and not the humid basement. I’ll make sure to have a fire extinguisher at the ready. These are very nice heaters, but you have to realize there is always a small amount of risk. I used a small kerosene heater for years without burning down my house, being careful to fill it outside and never leaving it unattended.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. It truly helps our tiny channel out. So thank you and I am thankful you found some of this useful. Thank you and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale.
Yes sir, back in OKLAHOMA, we didnt have the humidity there like we do here, I had some that were 4-5 years old with basic cleaning and manintanence they lasted quite a while. I think it may be the humidity here, but I also wanted to share this with anyone, let them check theirs prior to going camping etc. Thanks for taking the time to watch and share. your experience with us and I hope you have a blessed weekend. FYI - Regarding the filters for extension hoses to hook up a 20# tank...The part numbers below are for Mr Heater hoses that will work with your heater. Notice that 2 of them do not require a filter (the hose is made of a special material). The others do require a filter. All hoses from other manufacturers will require a filter. F273701 (Requires fuel filter F273699) F273702 (Requires fuel filter F273699) F273703-60 (Requires fuel filter F273699) F273703-144 (Requires fuel filter F273699) F273704 (No fuel filter required) ⬅ F271803 (No fuel filter required) ⬅

I got two of them. I just went to use them this year for the first time just to warm the house up a little bit and they didn’t work came across your video and I tried it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. The kind words are truly appreciated. I hope you have a blessed weekend. Stay warm and enjoy my friend. Dale.
Good tip on the silica bags. I store them in their original plastic bags, not in the box, inside the house where temp is controlled and not in a shed. They always work for me and show zero rusting.
this was a good video. I just bought a little buddy heater, and it's important to see what things can go wrong. Thank you for being a voice of experience. Glad you didn't have any burns on your hands.
Thank you for the kind words my friend. I ordered a new one to replace this one and it is working nicely. I have found that the quick connection hose with the built in regulator seams to keep the flame in the ceramic area better than the hose with the filter on it. I think that may help with the longevity of it as well. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment and I hope this video helps, when you get ready to store it and not have problems with your new one like I did this past season. Thank you and have a blessed weekend. Dale
@@EllaKlein-e8h Dale, you will never know how many people you saved and how many homes you saved if it weren't for your video! Well done my friend! God bless.
Thanks for the tip about putting a silicone packet or two in the box when storing it. Great idea!! Going to put some in the box where I store mine right now.
I think I saw a video that said you can take those silicone packets and put them in the oven on 250° for about 30 minutes to get the moisture out of occasionally.
Thank you my friend. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and know it is appreciated. Thank you and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
@@flowergarden1426 that's not really necessary. i think the consensus is that you shouldn't store the heater with any source of propane attached. if you live in a humid environment, dale's suggestion on using dessicant packs to minimize the moisture where it's stored is a great idea.
I have the little Buddy heater that sits on a one pound bottle that I used for keeping the ice fishing shack warm. I went to fire it up so I could take it out and use it in the new deer blind. Tried 3 different bottle ( 2 brand new ) and the thing will not light. Might need to get a new bigger Buddy heater. Will definitely keep this info in mind. Thanks for the info and have a great week !
Yes sir, I have an old Coleman heater that is probably 30 years old, it has a big round face on it, and it still works. my buddy heaters are almost like the 20 plug in heaters you get at Walmart, they just dont seam to last too many seasons anymore, . Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I Hope you have a blessed week . Dale
I've had dirt dobbers fill the volute of one of mine. I've had to change igniters before, too. I'm not attentive to PM, so I've had 5 of so, in 6 or 7 years.
Hahaha. That is awesome. We did that same thing when I was in college. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and know it is appreciated. Improvements to come. Have a blessed week. Dale.
Hey, thanks for this video. I've lived in a van, 2015 Ford Transit currently, for years now and have been using the small version of your heater for to heat with. I'm on my 4th or 5th heater since 2017. I was thinking the heaters were garbage because I've had to replace them so often. After watching this, I'm thinking my problems with the heaters were probably caused by the way I stored it each off season. I also didn't know about using the filter for the first heater, so I'm pretty sure that's what killed that one. I'm also installing radiant floor heating in this vehicle, so hopefully I can just keep the Buddy for backup. My current heater will be cleaned like new before I store it next time and I will definitely be getting some of those silca packs.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and share your story with us as well. I agree, if I had done better with the summer time storage it may not have happened, but I wanted to share with folks. Thank you and I Hope you have a blessed week Dale
You're very welcome my friend, I can't say for certain what happened on this and why it got so corroded other than it is so much more humid here than back in Oklahoma. I have pulled the news ones out of storage this fall already and no issues at all, so I can say they worked this past storage time. I hope you have a blessed week and thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment. Dale
The hose with the quick connect uses a high-to-low pressure regulator. This regulator catches all traces of oil and impurities. Hence why it says in the manual that no in-line filter is needed when using the quick connect hose.
Well said, Thank you so very much, I will see if I can find one of those hoses for my new one. It will help. Thanks again my friend, obviously I dont or didnt read the manual. It is a curiosity though. I wonder how it does it with out a filter? Technology. Interesting. Thanks again and have a blessed weekend. Dale
They changed the hoses for the quick connect they are made different so you do not get the debris from the hose, make sure you buy a Mr Heater hose not a aftermarket@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors
I have one of these, eight years old. Never had a problem. But I always use the 20 pound tank and never leave a one pound bottle in it when not in use. I never thought of the condensation being a problem I did that to make certain there would never be a leak. It has always had a filter on the heater. I have second one four years old, same with it, no problems. they both have a fan.
That’s awesome news. I have had some lasted that long back when I was in Oklahoma. Like you always use a filter etc. this was just a fluke accident I think. Thank you for sharing and have a blessed weekend. Dale.
Your very welcome, I have owned a lot of these over the years, I think the humidity here in deep East Texas is something I will have to work around this next spring when I box the new ones up, maybe put some of those moisture collecting deals in the box. Who knows. I am thankful I checked it before I went to camping the cold for a hair over two weeks. Thanks again and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
About 14 years of using my Big Buddy and it's been awesome. Depending on my usage I run one pounders our the dedicated 20lbs hose. I made a custom cable to power the fan off a USB battery brick instead of D batteries as well.
That's a good idea as well. I seen online yesterday they make a 12 volt plug for the ones that do have a built in fan. My new one I replaced this one with actually has the fan in it, and as mentioned, below, I took mine to deer camp for the 2 weeks in Nov and used one of the fans. I will be doing a video on that shortly as time allows. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
I d like to see ypu pull that heater apart to see what really happened here. The fact you had rising flame is of interest. Ive got a 3 year old Big B, and it is hooked to a 20lb tank. ive burned 40 tanks worth of LP used pre coupled with B H hose. ..Now this year im seeing xtra flame on my heater. Your video has me wondering and worrying. Its like it is not burning right or to much. Thank yyou for this vid. With the cold coming on im heading out tomarrow to buy a new one.. I just dont trust MY heater tonight. I ll pull the old one down to see .....
@@rexh58ableI waited for almost 2 months for a reply from mr heater, and never heard back from them. My best guess and I am not a propane or heater and air man, is somehow or some way, the hose in the back going from the tank to the pilot light had a tiny leak and when it finally leaked enough gas in the back of the unit, it all ignighted at once. Now the cause of said leak, I have no idea. I know I wont sleep with one on anymore after this incident, I get my space warmer than I would like then shut if off, If I wake up cold, I re warm the area and then go back for the rest of my sleep, Again, I am not saying it was a manufacturing defect or anything, it may well all be related to the rust from the humidity I now live in and am not used to living in such a humid place and it all could simply be from that. It could have rusted one of those little pipes just enough to cause a leak.? I am not certain and can only guess that this is what happened? I hope you have a blessed week. dale
I've had my buddy heater with the piezo starter and the power assisted fan for more then 8+ years now in nothern cali. Haven't had any issue I don't even store since it's used in the mancave / garage I do disconnect it during the off season. But I can't say anything negative about it but it's a fine piece of equipment. It surprises me to hear of this issue but I'm glad you did share it with everyone I'll be sure to have a fire extinguisher near by now since I've watched this video now.
Man, I tell you, back in Oklahoma I had some that lasted many many years just like your talking about and I dont know if it is the humidity hear and or the supply chain issue had some less quality parts or what the deal is, I generally use my equipment, and this one took me be surprise for dang sure, I replaced it with a newer one and it has the electric fan in it and since this video, and buying the new one, it has been totally issue free. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us and I hope you have a blessed weekend my friend. Sorry for the delay on the comment, this one slipped past me somehow. Dale
I think I heard you say you stored it away in the Attic where the humidity would be different than if it were inside the house . And as a side note those little silicone packets would be a good idea and it's a good idea to put them in the oven on 250 for about 30 minutes to get the moisture out of them .
Yes I did say attack, I think what I am calling an attack is not really a true name, it is in my shop and I have some upper storrage and a better way to describe would be a small loft area that is still part of the building and it is somewhat maintained year around with heat and air. I have not thought about the oven to dry t hem out. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and share the with us as well. Thank you so much for the tip and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale
Thankyou for taking the time to watch and comment, it truly helps our little channel out. I know I made some mistakes when I got ready to store this thing and I wanted to share my mistakes so maybe others dont make them as well. It is so much more humid here than back in Oklahoma and it is simply things I have never thought about including leaving the empty tank on, I just simply forgot about it. Thank you again for the kind words and I hope you have a blessed week dale
Correct. In high humidity, putting it in plastic will keep all moisture including salt air and can corrode non coated metals quickly like the old Japanese cars of the 70's. Great video!
Makes sense. But why do they ship them to you in a plastic bag ? It’s the same plastic bag it came in from the factory. Who knows. I added those extra packed of stuff that draws moisture out of the air when I stored the new one this year. It is working just fine. So make have just been a fluke. Who knows? Thank you so much I do agree and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. This was actually a video I made for a friend who never checks his stuff and show up to camp with stuff that does not work. However with the amount of constructive criticism this video has received. I promise you this. I do take it to heart and I am trying much harder to cut the blah blah blah stuff out of future videos. Again thank you so much and I hope you have a blessed week friend. Dale.
Thank you for your great video. Was just about to buy one of these heaters to use during blackouts. Read several comments saying the quality of the heaters has gone way down. Does anyone have suggestions for another brand ? Many thanks in advance.
I haven’t found anything else. I just replaced it with a new one and have not had any issues with the new one. Not sure what happened in this one. We use them daily in the winter so we still use it. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale.
Your very welcome brother. I was shocked. I think it’s just way too humid here. I have one that is working and I don’t trust it. When I get back from deer camp I will replace it with a new one.
Oh that is a good Idea, I may need to invest in one. I know I love my heaters when I need them. Thank you for sharing this with us and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale

I have had to use a long lighter in the past to help the pilot light along. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale.
Nice to know info. My sister has a small one for her tent. We live in northern California next to the Klamath Mountains. Does the Buddy Heater company have a maintenance video and repair video?
I am not sure the they do, I think they are just selling them and not really wanting folks to work on them and or repair them. I have not heard back from them since this incident in November. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, it sounds like yall have a Wonderfull area for camping. I would love to camp up in the part of the world. Thank you and have a blessed weekend. I run 40lb tanks on mine. I've used it a lot Over 3 years. I have new/good tanks. One of the things I learned when searching for a hose, is buy a good qoulity one with a godamn regulator on it. Forget the filter lol.
Works great. Havnt had an issue so far. It will take a fat min for gas to go thru the lines tho if you unhook them. Just hold the pilot nd try it every so often till lit. It is the regulator and bigger tank that messed you up.
I totally agree, I should have said that, it was in the last video from last year on storage, but. your correct, sometimes where we are here in texas, there are times after winter has started it warms up enough we are not going to be using them for a couple of weeks or so and you are correct, I will add this comment to the next video we make on the buddy heaters. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and share this tip with us all, it truly helps so, thank you so much. I hope you have a blessed weekend Dale
No, I wasn’t sure so that’s what I did. I think I created more issues than it was worth by leaving the empty tank on the other side. I had a fear it may leak. So I did it. My new one I just use the quick connect hose on it with a regulator built into the line and it works perfectly. Thanks for watching and sorry for the confusion I hope you have a blessed week. Dale.
I just bought one after having my furnace die. I used enough electric heaters to risk a house fire. I bought it in case of a power outage when we had the severe cold and wind come in. Luckily I didn't need it, but it beats nothing. Waiting a week with no heat was the best incentive for this purchase.
I have not mentioned it in the video, but our main heater went out and we have not been able to get it fixed yet because it is an older unit and like you mentioned, I am scared to run too many of the electric heaters in the old house with old wiring and it scares me more than the thought of the buddy heaters helping knock the coil down. Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
That is funny you would say that, I have never run one with out a filter and always use the buddy heater hose along with the buddy heater filter, No I dont make a habit of reading the directions, but the funny part is, 99% of the folks who comment, say, you dont need the filter if you run the buddy heater hoses, however with them, the thing still gets junk in it and quits, Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
Man I have no idea. Might send buddy heater an email and ask them. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale.
I agree, I should have not left it on there and I simply forgot about it. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week, Dale

There's a storage bag that can be purchased. It holds two 1 lb canisters and a storage pocket to hold the 20 lb tank hose plus whatever else including instruction manual. Basically, disassembled ready to reassemble again.
I may need to check into one of those. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and share this with us. Sorry for the delay I missed this comment somehow. Thank you and have a blessed week. Dale.
hahaha, yeah, the funny part is, this video was pseicifically for a buddy of mine who never checks his gear and gets to camp and his stuff never works. I never pictured so many people watching it. I hope some of the information was helpful and sorry it was so long, if you have a buddy like mine, this video will make more sense. hahaha, Thanks agian and have a blessed week my new friend. Dale
My heater caught fire too, with no warning. I turned it on, flamed up normally after about a minute I hear a sound from the heater and it was ablaze. I cut the gas and I had flames from inside coming out the slots. I was able to put it out because the gas was off. I found that fitting that lets the bottle swivel inside, was cracked. This allowed the cheap tubing to move out just enough to leak propane. When the propane caught on fire, it lit up the insulation inside the heater. If I were to fix it, I would have to block off the bad fitting, but I dont trust it anymore. My advice is if you are gonna use this heater, NEVER run it with no one watching it. Don't run it when you are sleeping. Don't leave your pets or kids in the RV or room alone with this heater running. The tubing is cheap and the fittings are more fragile than I thought. Don't know how or why the fitting cracked, I have been pretty easy on the unit, but after it cracked, the tube could move and leak the gas. I advise getting some other heater, This one is dangerous.
I totally agree on all accounts, sounds like yours did the same thing mine did and I too no longer trust them, I can't sleep with one on and I would not ever leave the room one is running in anymore because, like you, it happened to quickly with no warning that I can't trust them not to do this again. I so agree with all your points and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors YES, It happened, it was silent when it failed and it was aflame in 2 seconds. I have been placing comments when I see these heaters being reviewed, and of course, everyone gives them shining reviews. I give out the warning and hope some listen. They DO put out a lot of heat but you can't trust them ever. They can turn to a fire breathing dragon in seconds, but few realize its danger. thanks for the response.
I don’t think you need it. However this one in this video I was afraid it would somehow leak out the other side so I out an empty one on the other side and it corroded over. Hahah. Oops my bad. I forgot about it. The new one I replaced this one with I am using the quick connect hose with the regulator on it. Much safer you don’t see the flames from the ceramic crawling up past where they should be like the normal hose and filter. Go figure this one out, you can’t add a filter to the hose from the same company with the quick connect. So that just brings up other questions in my mind. Why does it work fine with out a filter hit the other hoses from buddy heater need a filter. Hahahah. Who knows. Technology. Thank you and I hope this helps answer your questions my friend. Have a blessed week Dale.
Thanks for the heads up!! I do not know where you are in East Texas, But I do know that Buddy Heater has issues in elevations above 7000 feet. I have used the original regular BH and now use the Pro Big Buddy Heater and have never had any issues with either one. Thanks for sharing, Stay safe. Bless.
Thank you for letting us know that, I will check out the pro one and see, because we use ours a lot in the winter, I use it more at home in the shop then I do camping. I will look into the po, thank you so much and I hope you have a blessed week Dale
Ok ime gonna say it my buddy 5 years old used a lot no rust no moisture . But had the same thing thing happen in side after running boom fire out top through it it side on 20 ft hose turned off tank. So your correct. It seems to me the pressure regulator failed. But can't prove it till I get a new one. Pushing to much gas not really a buddy fault in my case old in your case neglected unit leaving tank on. Causes rust getting in one regulator probley pushed rust to second. Be safe please never leave un attended
Oh I agree, and I try to do my bestie the video and say, Its not buddy heater issues, it is my issue and moving to a new area, we are not used to the humidity here. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment and share your experience with us as well. It truly helps, so thank you and I Hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
Ok up date replaced pressure regulator s. Working fine again. 30 dollar fix. The regulator failed giving to much gas to buddy heater boom flames out top. Replace your regulator s after a few yrs
I've used my big buddy for 4 years straight with NO PROBLEMS. I live in a RV and use it for 6 months of the year, probably. I don't use "filter". However, when NOT using you want to put your buddy in a sealed bag to prevent dust, debris and humidity from deteriorating it's condition. Take the time to clean it before storing it away. Especially near the pilot light area. Once cleaned before storage, fire it up again to make sure you didn't push and debris into the pilot light. Because, if you did it's better to deal with it now rather than when you need it again.
I agree, there can be some issues addressed from my honesty on how I have used this one season. I have some orders ones that have lasted several years and like you said, It could simply be a my problem issue, I have just never had one leaking and then blow up, I am thankful I was able to get it out of my shop and get the fire out. Thank you so much for the tips my friend, I know many will agree and potentially learn from your comments. So thank you so very much and I truly hope you have a blessed week and stay warm my friend. How hot does it get in your attic? Those propane bottles have a warning on them, it says not to store above a certain temperature. I'm willing to bet that it got way too hot in your attic.
I said the wrong word, it is actually a loft and it is in the main break room of the shop, with ac, so heat is not the issues, I think it was this dang humidity I am not used to. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment Dale
Yeah I have wondered about the quick connection not having a filter on it,. How long have you been using your set up like that with no filter. Maybe the new hoses for the quick connection do not have the oil issues or whatever was originally causing some for the issue when using the longer hoses? Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
@@LouisianaJesse Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. I think buddy heater is using newer materials these days,. I noticed corrosion on the connection where the 1LB bottle screws in at.that right there told me propane leaked out. I live in east tx as well.and yes, the humidity can be pretty bad at times.especilly in the attic and garage. So you mighy try one of those heavy duty toates with a hinged lid that latches shut.i figure that'll keep moisture away. Plus you can keep the accessories with the heater as well.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and share this with all of us. I like the tote Idea as well. Thank you and I hope you have a blessed week. Enjoy these next few days of spring, it's a wonderful time to be in EAST TEXAS. Dale
Question: if you use the big buddy with a 20lb tank do you have to plug in two of them (one to each side) to make both sides of the big buddy heater to work. if you only use one side will only one side heat up?
Excellent question, I was wondering the same and I have the answer, I left an empty one pound bottle connected to the side that was not connected to the bottle, (my fear was it might leak gas) and it will run both burnings just the same as if you only hade one bottle hooked to it. Using the 20 pound tank, you get a lot more heat for a lot less money as opposed to using the 1 pound bottle. After my little incident with this one, When I bought the second one, I used the 20 pound tank, only hooking it up to one side like I previously did on the one in this video, I just skipped putting an empty on the other side. Second, after they got back in stock, (full on winter) my hose from buddy heater with the quick connection came in. It has the regulator on it and I must say it works better. The regular hose with the filter screwed into the one pound bottle, this is my experience, the flame will gradually come up a hair high in my opinion. The quick connect hose has the regulator built in and does not do the, It makes me feel safer and also make me wonder why they dont all have the regulator built into the ? who knows? I hope this helps my friend and I hope you have a blessed weekend. I am about to put mine up for the end of winter and will do another little video on this exact topic as well as the process I will do to prep it for storage. Thank you and I Hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors Thank you. Really appreciate the response. I look forward in seeing the new video on this soon. I have the buddy heater hose coming with my order that is made for the 20lb tank which does not require the filter. I didn't see the one with a regulator quick disconnect hose built in. Do you have a link to that. sorry to be pain, just learning here. Take care and stay safe.
Rather than the issue being humidity, is it possible that the corrosion issue was a byproduct of the fan batteries leaking and the battery acid eating the the copper inner workings? Just a thought. Was the unit stored with the D cell batteries in it?
This one actually has the switch in the place, but there was no fan in it and no batteries were ever installed because it does not or did not come with the fan. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and know it was appreciated. I do like the way you think and I too could see that being a cause. Just not in this case it was sold with out the fan. I have since learned this was probably a California model which they do not sell with fans. Not sure why? Thank you and I Hope you have a blesse week. Dale
The specialty hose is designed so no filters are necessary. All propane appliances in the instructions say disconnect the tank before storing . You should always store in a cool dry place not a Texas attic where temperatures can be over 200 degrees. The higher attic temperatures make the metal swell and shrink as the temperatures change from day time to night causing the tank fitting leak. The leaking tank will be cold causing condensation. Thus heat and humidity equals corrosion.
Yeah. I’m in Texas , east Texas with a lot of humidity. The temps in my shop don’t get that high. I know they could in a normal attic. My shop is built different. More like raised ceilings in a house and it’s cooled in the heat. But I do understand how heat accelerates rust which is how a cutting torch works. I appreciate you taking the time to share this with us all and know your comments and thought process is appreciated. So thank you so much and I hope you have a blessed weekend my friend. Dale.
@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors you are a lucky man to have ac in the shop. I understand high ceilings the ceilings in my house are 10 ft and that gives the hot air room to rise keeping the lower level more comfortable. With the extreme heat the temperature near the ceilings were enough to make one not climb the stairs. It reminded me of when I explained to my friend that the swamp cooler we had in the panhandle would not work in East Texas because of the humidity. I live now in the upper midwest and the heat this year felt like Oklahoma with the drought we were having. Stay safe and warm good hunting.
@@williamirelan9332 Thank you my freind, I agree, it is just a small window unit, but it truly helps knock down that awful east texas heat. Yes sir, I have heard that about the swamp coolers not being effective out here due to the humidity as well. I totally get the heat rising and not wanting to go upstairs as well, it is definitely warmer in my little loft area I have even with the AC running hahha, I try not to hang out up there hahhaa. Thank you again and I hope you have a.blessed week. The bow hunting trip was successful, it was an awesome trip, I did not bag one this year and I am still trying to locate a close to home place to hunt around here in east texas, season is about over and I am already looking forward to next year, I will post some of the videos from the hunting trip soon as well. Thanks again, try to stay warm with this what feels like a cold from that hit our country from top to bottom. I hope you have a blessed weekend. dale
That is so smart, I have one now as well. You just never know and the fire blanket is an awesome idea. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
Good idea to have at least 2 fire blankets. One ALWAYS in the kitchen unboxed and ready to grab for potential cooking stove fires. One near the back door or wherever you are lighting up a grill, fire pit, or buddy heater just in case something goes wrong (Murphy’s Law). Fire Blankets are not just regular household blankets. They are made with fire retardant materials. We bought our Fire Blankets on-line.
Yeah, I made a mistake and never even thought about the little tank on mine, I thnk it sure could have been from me forgetting about it. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale
Ha, thanks buddy, I had to shave it off about a year ago, it is back in the process, but not nearly as long yet, that beard was two years old back then. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope your beard comes in the way you want it to as well. They are fun to have. Dale
Quick tip . If you store the heater or anything that takes a propane bottle with the propane connection empty them cover the connection as spiders a d small bugs will get inside the lines to build a home.
No, that is about the only unit I have not tried, I have looked into it, especially for its various Functions,. I have not however purchased one. I probably should get one just fr the reviews. I will be working on a video soon for the replacement big buddy heater and an accessory I love and have found it especially useful for getting more air flow from the unit, so look for that video to come out soon as well. Yeah. I used the bag it came it. But I do agree. I think that is a good solid suggestion. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale.
Ha, your welcome, It is that time of year again when I will be putting mine up for the summer, I dont think I will need them agian until November or dec unless it cools off some in oct. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I Hope you have a blessed week. Dale
Yes, we should never leave a tank connected in storage, I kind of thought everyone knew that. There appears to have been moisture trapped in the box, also I probably would not wrap it in a plastic bag for storage after use. Brand new, factory fresh is much different than after a season of use. Just my $0.02
Agreed, I think there is some lessons to be learned, so I thought I would share with everyone, To me coming from a home state with very little humidity, I never thought about the rust, but your right, in a humid area like I now live it, It potentially trapped in the humidity, Either way, Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. It's a must use regulator and filter always on hose on bigger tanks one micron lower than one that's in the heater, throw away after few years but another new one
Yeah, that is what a person would think, but there is no way to attach the filter to the quick connect hose with the built in regulator, that is why I showed it in the video I posted this week. I do agree, however, it's not possible, with the one buddy heater makes. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment and you would think they wouldn't sell the hoses with out the regulator if its a must. Make a person think about it for sure. Thanks again, I truly appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us as will many others. So thank you and have a blessed week. Dale
I have the buddy heater not have had a problem and I used the 20 pound tank. But it stopped working the next time I use it brand new tank so I put a new little tank on it and it works not sure why but I think it's to much pressure
Thank you for taking the time to share this with us all, That is interesting. I wonder why, it may well be the too much pressure from the one tank. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale
The one I replaced this one with last year is still going strong. I think that particular one in this video was a fluke. Who knows. Never had it happen on one in the past and the new one I replaced it with is working just fine. So who knows. I never heard back from them when I emailed them about this one. I hope this helps. Have a blessed weekend. Dale.
No sir, and I so agree, I think it is all nonsense. In fact I am currently uploading a video on how to fix your buddy heater after using thier hose and filter and it stops working. I hate to say it, but the only fix that will possibly work is to buy a new one and only use the one pound bottles and or if you can find the Coleman heater, mine is over 25 years old and it still works. I just found another one on eBay and bought it, it will be the next video I upload after this one goes live in the morning. I wish they worked, I just can't seam to keep one working for a season anymore much less several years, they cost way more now, the LP is so much higher and you can't even get through a good cold front with one anymore. it dont make any sense to me. > technology should be increasing not going backwards.? I wish I had a better answer for you , but I am gong to switch back to the older Coleman, they work. Dale
I would think there is some culpability on Mr. Heater. Any piping delivering propane to the appliance should be corrosion proof....stainless or copper. It seems impossible but propane produces 1.6 pounds of water for every pound you burn. That is why these heaters can cause serious condensation problems in synthetic tents. That rusting at the bottom of the heater with a surrounding wet look seems to indicate something other than moisture was eating away at it. Maybe something spilled in it, or leaked on it....maybe a ruptured battery? That rustless stain/reaction speaks volumes. I do not think the stuck bottle is the culprit. As for the stuck bottle I would spray some CRC Knock Er' Loose on it and let it stand, up-side down for a day or so....maybe hit it again. Then maybe an oil filter wrench will break it loose. Thank you for sharing such valuable info. BTW....when storing for extended periods be darn sure and pull the batteries. Otherwise they could cause a leaking problem. Also, the need for a filter can be mitigated by purchasing the quick-connect hose with a regulator attached. It is the high pressure on the line that causes leaching that obstructs the pilot light.
Yeah, I honestly don't know what happened. I did email them and I never got a reply, I fixed it by buying a new one. I will say this one never had batteries in it, I agreee, looks like it could be bad battery corrosion, but this unit had the switch but no motor for the fan, so maybe a California model according to some, I dont know. I have used them for years and this is the first time I have been scared by one, not sure what caused it. I will say, I got the new one and it is working fine, so who knows. thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week, PS, sorry for the delay, it didnt notify of this comment, sorry buddy. Thanks again for you patients dale

If you use the Mr heater 10 foot hose, it's the only hose you can use without the filter. When you use the filter, keep in mind you will have to change it when it fills with oil when you use hoses other than the 10 foot hose.
Thank you for that information, I have ordered the one hose with the regulator as well as the quick connect for the big buddy heater, it is made my the company but it is on backorder, so I am not sure when I will see it, I will repost another video with it when it arrives and see if it can tame that higher flame issue that is starting to happen with the big buddy heater (the new one). Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and know it is appreciated. Thank you and I hope you have a blessed weekend. dale
I found your video because my current big buddy is having issues not staying lit. I searched for a video on how to take it apart to clean it. Cleaning it didn't work. This is only the second season of use.
@@phantomfixerThank you for taking the time to share this with us. I have one as a spare, that needs to be taken apart as well. I got it last season as well, and it wont stay lit, I have watched a few videos on the process. my concerns with those taking the small gas lines apart make me nervous if that makes sense. I do get it, they cost way too much for what appears to be a one time or one season use, like these newer ones appear to be. My first buddy heaters lasted years with very few issues and normal issues could have been rerssolved with the q-,tip cleaning the pilot light area and it was almost like any of the junk that now clogs them up in the lines up above burnt off and they continued to work for years. It is a mystery to me why they dont last as long or need more frequent mainitanince than years past. Sad part is, I have an old Coleman heater that has a round ceramic face to it and oddly enough it is over 25-30 Years old now and it still works? crazy to think it has never once had a single issue, the only time it goes out is when you are out of fuel. It can be hooked to the larger bottles as well with out flame ups ..? its old my friend. I may do a video on it if anyone can find one they appear to be built for life like the old original Coleman cook stoves. Thank you again and I hope you get yours fixed and have trouble free winter use with it my friend. dale
@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoorsGas lines are not really a problem, ends are flared on the lines just make sure your connections are tight. I've taken the buddy heater apart a few times. I had five that malfunctioned, two caught on fire, the last one with the filter. I ended up with the big buddy because I made it clear to Mr heater that I didn't appreciate them not making a better effort in the past to inform customers about the availability of the 10 foot hose, and not having to buy and change filters after every season; So to shut me up they offered to send me a free heater, so I upgraded to the big buddy thinking it would be better. They didn't have the hose in stock so I had to get one from Dicks sporting goods. This is what happened to my other heater. ruclips.net/video/HbgiH_59q-Y/видео.html
I think you are supposed to use the Mr Heater hoses, instead of the aftermarket hoses. The Mr Heater hoses are supposed to be better than the aftermarket hoses.
That is what I understand as well. I have always used their branded hoses as well. I should have probably said that in the video. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale
Only two hoses do not require filters. One is the Mr. Heater part #F273704. There's also a 12' official hose with a regulator, but it only works on Big Buddy. Every other hose needs a filter.
Oh great idea, I dont know that me taking it out of the shop was a good idea, however it worked. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us and I hope you heave. blessed weekend and Merry Christmas. Dale
I had a similar experience with a little buddy heater hooked up to a 20 lb tank. It worked great for a season and then became clogged with a nasty stinking oil, I was unaware of it needing a filter at the time. I took it apart and cleaned it out with compressed air and lots of paper towels, it worked again for only a short time and then became completely inoperable. I agree that Buddy heaters design is not the problem, they are expensive and work great for a little while. I totally disagree that the oils in the hose is the culprit! Propane is a colorless, odorless, gas that they add a denature chemical to that gives it a rotten egg odor. I believe it's the chemical additive causing the problem. Peace and blessings.
Oh wow. I had never thought about the added chemical for our own safety being the cause. That actually makes a ton more sense to me on the possibilities over oil from hose manufacturing. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale.
@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors Don't be fooled that they care about our safety! If anything the additive is added too make us ill and capitalize on our misery! Peace and blessings.
Hahaha. Man I am so sorry it was so long. I do appreciate the feedback and will be working harder in the future to cut to the chase a little quicker. Again thank you for the kindness and positive feedback. I hope you have a blessed week. Dale.
The company shows a hose with a quick connect on the manual, Since this unit has a quick connect option, however, if you are on amazon, the quick links to suggested items to purchase with the big buddy heater shows the mr heater hose and mr heater filter. The alleged issues with using after market hoses in years past was the oils in the hose from manufacturing process will clog the line going to the pilot light and will cause your heater to not work when you need it and a frozen morning, this is a heck of a time to find out. I will go onto say, I have always used buddy heater hoses and they still have had the same issue, so the quick fix is to run it with the filter, however, those hoses that they sell that will fit the filter do not have a pressure regulator on them and it can cause your flames from the ceramics to go too high because there is too much pressure in the tank for the small hose. So my short answer would be to contact them and ask for certain, I am currently trying to find a good solution because the quick connect hose does not have an option for a filter and these units cost too much to let them get destroyed with he oils clogging the line going to the pilot light. I will do some more research and come up with a good solution. Thanks for taken the time to watch and comment and I Hope you have a blessed weekend. Dale

I've owned one of these very heaters for a minute now. If you want a bag to keep this thing in. Buy the carrying bag they make for it. Quit using those cheap lil one lb cylinders. The reason that happened is Electrosis. Caused by the metal on those p.o.s china made bottles. I went to the flame king bottles. There built with brass nipples. I also bought the flame king lp bottle filler. The system paid for Itself the first year. mine isn't running off of the one lb bottles it's on a 20 cylinder. You do not need that filter. I've had mine long enough to say that with complete certainty. When not in use. The heater has 2 one lb bottles in it. I've never had a issue.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. It is truly appreciated. I did purchase that whole kit your talking about and I was also concerned about not have a filter between the large bottle and the flame king, thinking it might still clog up since it is not "filtered" Your saying it is not needed, so thank you again for taking the time to share this with us all. The units are sold as indoor safe however, use it with caution and make sure you have a co2 sensor in your home or room you are using it in just incase, we can't smell co2 and it can cause significant health issues or death so I am told. Thank you so much my friend. I have some more updates. Ok’ing when I get back from this 2 week camping trip I’m on. Good stuff thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale.
The bottle you left in the heater was LEAKING. That's where your rust and damage came from. When you hook up any connection to these heaters you need to immediately test for leaks (soapy water sprayed on the connection). Insult to injury...you stored the leaky bottle in the heater. No offense, but this is all on you.
Im 99% sure that I said, it was something I learned. I did not blame mr heater and the empty one pound bottle may have caused a leak It was empty when I put it on there. I only put it on there because I thought it may leak if there was nothing attached to it and I absolutely forgot it was even on there. I also felt like sharing this with otters so they did not make the same mistakes as me, IE dont leave the bottle on, and check it before you use it. I understand the the little stickers tell you to check for Leaks and I think that is wonderful for those who do it,. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale
Rust and corrosion, I imagine somebody was watching this video very very anxiously looking back and forth from the video to their buddy heater that's on fire, Just waiting for you to get to the rust and corrosion part to see if they have the same problem or need to go on to another video to find their issue. They were sitting there watching the video looking back and forth at the heater and their cell phone and saying "come on come on come on".... And he died. He did. Hypothetically he died. Lol. When I first got my buddy heater I was hypervigilant because I'm in a van and my tank could only be inside at the moment. It was a freaking disaster waiting to happen, so one night as my rubber hose, which is why I recommend stainless steel hoses instead of rubber, it was so coiled up that it got in front of the heater itself Now I'm not trying to fall asleep but I am dozing off cuz I'm in a van and I'm exhausted fully intended to turn it off before I went to sleep but instead woke up to a crazy sound of gas expelling from the hose itself and less than a split second goes by less than a fraction of a second and I immediately shut the thing off disconnect everything and then proceed to have a heart attack, lol. Or at least what felt like a heart attack. These things are crazy dangerous. But now after I just put my new felt lining in for the ceramic plate insulator, now I'm paranoid that I didn't check it well enough for corrosion but I'm just hoping that if I do some tests and smell That propane it'll be safe.... But will I ever light it again I have no idea, I'd rather not find out I'm wrong. Lol

I would also store my heater in an air conditioned and heated place, not an attic.
Mr buddy sells specific hose for the 20lb tank that is oil free
But, always, disconnect all bottles and hoses prior to storing it. Never store these heaters with bottles attached. Good lesson learned and shared. Thanks.

@@RandyBuckey It's probably in your manual...but who reads manuals? LOL
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you you have a blessed week. Thanks again and know your kindness is appreciated.
Dale
this was a good video.

Disconnect all hose and tank. Make sure there is no gas left in the heater.
@@paulpugh2480 Thanks! another great idea. I’ll try it

Moral of story, never leave cannister tank in mr heater unused ! Take small tank off between uses.
Agreed, well said, that you for taking the time to watch and comment as well.
Dale
Remove propane tanks everytime when you shut it off?

I've had dirt dobbers fill the volute of one of mine. I've had to change igniters before, too.
I'm not attentive to PM, so I've had 5 of so, in 6 or 7 years.
Thank you for the information. In speach class we learned to make an outline of the main topics points on 3 by 5 cards.
Thank you and I Hope you have a blessed week
Dale
I really appreciate the tip about using silica packets to absorb moisture when storing my heater.

Dale.
Thanks for the video and your info on the heater.

About 14 years of using my Big Buddy and it's been awesome. Depending on my usage I run one pounders our the dedicated 20lbs hose. I made a custom cable to power the fan off a USB battery brick instead of D batteries as well.
My next video on the buddy heaters will be about the fan as well. I love the new addition to my camping gear.

Thank you again for the kind words and I hope you have a blessed week

Dale.

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment, I will be adding one soon as they are back in stock.

I ALSO THINK YOU SHOULD TAKE OFF TANKS AND PULL OUT THE FAN BATTERIES WHEN YOU AREN'T GOING TO USE FOR AWHILE.
Im a little confused. Do i need to use a 1lb tank on the opposite side of the unit when using a 20lb tank with a hose on the other side ?
Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us and I hope you have a blessed weekend.

when all else fails, follow the instructions from Mr. Heater whereby large tanks require a fuel filter!

This allowed the cheap tubing to move out
just enough to leak propane.
Don't know how or why the
fitting cracked, I have been pretty easy on the unit, but after it cracked, the tube could move and
leak the gas.

@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors YES, It happened, it was silent when it failed and it was aflame in 2 seconds.

They DO put out a lot of heat but you can't trust them ever. They can turn to a fire breathing dragon in seconds, but few realize its danger.
thanks for the response.
@@lifequest7453I am glad I didn’t get one, I kept hearing many channels I watch, telling everyone to get these.
If your using a 20# tank w/ the filter & hose , should you or do you have to have a 1# canister connected on the other side?
Have a blessed week

Don't leave steel tanks connected to an aluminum port. Keeping the dissimilar metals in contact will promote corrosion.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment

I have the quick connection. Although I don't have a filter. It does have a pressure regulator. Not a straight tank to unit.

I noticed corrosion on the connection where the 1LB bottle screws in at.that right there told me propane leaked out. I live in east tx as well.and yes, the humidity can be pretty bad at times.especilly in the attic and garage.

I keep a fire blanket close by in case of a fire.

Have you used the Buddy heater flex yet ?
No, that is about the only unit I have not tried, I have looked into it, especially for its various Functions,. I have not however purchased one. I probably should get one just fr the reviews. I will be working on a video soon for the replacement big buddy heater and an accessory I love and have found it especially useful for getting more air flow from the unit, so look for that video to come out soon as well. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and know it is appreciated.

I would consider not storing the heater in a plastic bag. I believe they keep moisture from evaporating, they may allow water to accumulate.
Yeah. I used the bag it came it. But I do agree. I think that is a good solid suggestion. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed weekend.

Thank you for your tips on buddy heaters..😅😅😅

Do you have any updates on these heaters?
The one I replaced this one with last year is still going strong. I think that particular one in this video was a fluke. Who knows. Never had it happen on one in the past and the new one I replaced it with is working just fine. So who knows. I never heard back from them when I emailed them about this one.
I hope this helps.
Have a blessed weekend.
Dale.
Frustrated to say the least. Little bottles work like a charm. The company filter and 10’ hose doesn’t. Any ideas ?

Mr. Heater hose #F273704 does not require a filter. Is that the hose you're talking about?
I will say, I got the new one and it is working fine, so who knows. thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week,
PS, sorry for the delay, it didnt notify of this comment, sorry buddy.

@@HeartlandMakesAndOutdoors This might sound crazy but is there any chance something pissed on it....rats or cats? I am thinking that is the culprit.

Only two hoses do not require filters. One is the Mr. Heater part #F273704. There's also a 12' official hose with a regulator, but it only works on Big Buddy. Every other hose needs a filter.
Also had one flare up. Tossed a wool camping blanket over it and it was out in seconds
Oh great idea, I dont know that me taking it out of the shop was a good idea, however it worked. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us and I hope you heave. blessed weekend and Merry Christmas.

And wat kind of sace hose would i get to hook up to a 20 lb tank

Lol
Thanks for taking the time to share this with us all. I truly an appreciate it and I hope you have a blessed week.
