The D6 certainly has a "familiar" sound. There's a reason it has become the industry standard for so long, and for the low price point. But we agree that people who want a more open and natural sound are going to have to get the 4055 because almost no other high-end condenser mic is designed for modern live sound kickdrum usage. DPA's R&D department did a really good job with this design!
I'm sure the DPA is a good mic. Sounds like captures the whole kick drum. It does sound like it will need more processing to get it tight. The D6 just has a vibe to it.
@@Mix3dbyMark It depends on what people mean by tight. Some people might not think the DPA sounds “tight” because it has a lot of ambient mid and high frequency noise, and maybe some EQ or gating would “tighten” it up a bit more. But going back-and-forth between the two mics, we found that the DPA actually has a naturally “tighter” bass response, in that it sounds more accurate. The D6 bass range has a “textured” sound with a higher concentration between 80-200Hz. In general, we preferred the sound of the 4055 below 80Hz most of the time.
Both have different patterns DPA is cardoid and D6 is hypercardoid. The DPA was designed as a flat respond. The D6 has a pre-eq’d sound. The DPA reminds me of the AT AE2500 flat and usually needs work to get it to that “kick sound” people strive for. The D6 has a circuit board inside that does that already. The big question is does the DPA sound 3-4 times the price better than your regular go to mics?
I love that the DPA captures the whole kick, but IMHO, live sound is about getting a great sound quickly, and the DPA 4055 would need much more massaging with processing before it fits in the mix. Just my 2 cents.
The d45 sounds like a marching band kick drum . D6 sounds more like a rock and roll band. And I think the d6 is a bit better live as it cleans up the mid range for the rest of the instruments . But I still like the Sennheiser 602 kik mic
I might use that dpa on a very kick controlled drummer. The sounds you can get out it vary much more than the d6. Maybe a jazz guy or even a country player.
The 4055 sounds fantastic and punchy af, but my ears are very used to the D6 sound I guess. I still prefer the 4055 in this test. I don't figure you're going to do a kick mic shootout, but if you ever get a chance to use an Audio-Technica AE2500 I'd be very curious in this type of situation.
Seems like techs are allergic to midrange in the kick, given how many prefer the D6. As someone who has a more Bonham inspired drum sound, I'd use nothing but the DPA. So much more accuracy right from the get go.
4055 is better for the first two bands. D6 is better for the last two bands. What the heck? 🙃 I assume 4055 would punch through the whole mix even a band doing heavy metal. D6 is more like a solid EDM kick. I don't know which one gives you a chest kick. A chest kick is always better if it's live I think.
D6 is classic kick drum sound, 4055 sounds very open, natural and raw.

@@jasonlapasinskas5302 that pre-eq is tasty on the D6.

D6 is what I think of as the ideal kick sound.

ill second this!! shootout . There's a few sleeper kick mics that I think sound fantastic!
Thank you for making this👏🏼
Can we hear both at the same time?
This was great thanks so much
D6 raw is so good
its got its own eq curve. You almost don't need to eq it if your doin rock or metal.
Please include Sennheiser E602 next.
D6 even amazing thru the PA
Спасибо вам за ваши видео, за ваш труд.
Dpa 4055 is behaving like a condenser microphone
it's picking all frequencies that's why condenser mic have gain and falt response
D6 more clean

That first kick drum sounds like a basket ball.
Give me that DPA every single day. I know how to EQ and don’t need the microphone to try to do it.
