Just need to add my netting now they're flowering. Only got my plot 2 weeks ago but cracked on....but also daw a bird trapped the other day in someone's netting so rather anxious about doing it wrong 😬 but aslong as it's secured down properly....hopefully won't be an issue 👍 thanks for all the great advice 😊

Thank you very much for the message Clare which is greatly appreciated. It sounds you have done amazing in. 2 weeks so keep up the good work!
You are quite right about the netting which is something I mentioned in the video, that the netting needs to be secured properly to prevent birds and other wildlife getting trapped. Thanks again for your comment and keep me up to date with your progress. Kind regards. Gary

Thanks for the strawberry tips, good to know I am doing the right things with them. I need to get a net over mine before they start to ripen, lots of large fruit developing and I am looking forward to them. They just don't taste right from the supermarket, they are never sweet and quite watery. Much better to grow your own.

Hi and thank you very much for your comment. I’m really pleased you enjoyed the video and you are absolutely right, the strawberries you buy from the shops taste nothing like home grown fresh strawberries! Kind regard. Gary

Hi Gary, Only started growing my own vegies & fruit this yr so only been subscribed for past few months, but find your vids really informative. Ive got some runners on my strawberry plants but dont want to cut them off and waste them, how do I remove to re-pot now while the main plants are producing fruits. I dont want to waste them... Thankyou

Thank you very much for your comment Debbie and I’m really pleased you are enjoying my videos.
At this time of year it is best to continue to remove the runners to allow all of the plants energy to go into producing those lovely strawberries. The plants will produce plenty of new runners once the fruiting is complete.
To remove runners you will need to nip them off as close to the main plant as possible, don’t be tempted to try to pull them off.
You could replant runners now if the have produced nodes which is where they will form the new roots. If they haven’t then they will no good for new plants.
There is another video on my channel which should answer most of your questions and I hope this helps:

Your patch looks very productive and orderly. I planted 10 new ever bearing plants this spring and have 5 together in a container. This is very useful information. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you very much for your comment Anita and I’m really pleased you found the video useful. All of the strawberry plants you see in the video originated from six plants I bought from a garden centre a few years ago. Kind regards. Gary

Hi Gary i found your channel through facebook, thank you for the information, im finding slugs and snails are eating my strawberries every year, can you advise on anything i could try to deter them please.

Thank you very much for your comment which is greatly appreciated and I’m really pleased you found my channel and I hope you find the content helpful.
Slugs are a real nuisance for fruit and veg growers and can devastate crops in no time at all. Try placing copper tape around your strawberry plants - slugs don't like to cross it. Additionally, mulch with coffee grounds or use a beer trap to attract and drown them.
I was already planning a new video on how to deal with slugs which I will probably publish in the next year, possibly around March so keep an eye out for that. Kind regards. Gary

Thanks for all the information Gary. I have lots of flowers on my strawberries so I must be doing something right. My problem is slugs. I have put the appropriate slug pellets around but they dont seem to be killing the slugs who are feasting on my lettuce. Any ideas?

    • @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen
      @TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen  2 года назад +1

Hi Jenny and thank you for your comment and question. I’m pleased you liked the video.
It’s good that you have plenty of flowers on your strawberries which should result in a good crop! I don’t really suffer with slugs on my strawberries I have more of a problem with bird which is why I always net them.
Using appropriate slug pellets is one solution and depending on how you grow them there are other deterrents such as copper tape, beer traps and using egg shells around the plants. I’ve seen somee people suggest mulching as a slug deterrent however I’m not convinced with this as it gives the slugs a nice cosey place to hide and live!
I hope the above helps and kind regards. Gary
