Insurance companies factor in the price they can get selling on the write off. At the moment those prices seem quite strong so the odds of them writing off light damage is high.
I've always thought the write off system was fundamentally bent, in the sense that it is manipulated by the insurers. One car gets repaired by them and not put on the register, another with similar damage gets written off and goes on the register as they make more money on it with a low payout and auctioning the damaged car. The Government is not interested, plus a repair industry that is largely unregulated and cars uninspected. I have a Cat D car and the repairer ( reputable) and I had a long chat about it before i bought it . I've had the car six years exactly and done 60,000 miles with just a bit more than routine servicing. No real problems at all.

Thanks for the video, I just found your channel recently. It's funny when I hear you say South Molton , I'm watching from Manitoba Canada, but my Uncle and his wife run a boarding kennel and dog walking area at Newtown, that must be fairly close to you . Sounds like you've done well on sales, hopefully it continues as people might start running out of money with a bad economy and won't be able to afford so many new cars and have to buy used instead. Hope you have a good Christmas and new year.
You go well and beyond for your customers I give you that. That’s the reason for your success. I speak to a lot of traders and it is very quiet time of year for them. Well done mate
The idea is with the insurers is the repairs are done "to manufacturer specification", warranted and audited as such. Whereas with a damaged car auctioned through salvage you have no idea what driveway mechanic has bodged it back together.
@@ChopsGarage I wouldnt say many, maybe the proud few that're happy to advertise how they repair their cars. There's over 8k cars for sale on copart uk right now, and there'll be another few thousand on there next week, let alone the other salvage agents, most of those wont be repaired on youtube. Bear in mind with anything catted there's no guarantee on the quality of repair and that's the main reason for the cat markers. It's a "buyer beware" equivalent for the public who are not in the know with the salvage trade. I personally think only those in the trade should be able to buy salvage vehicles pre-repair, but that's just me...
Your right mate, when you buy a cat car you can be fairly sure that it's not been done right, especially these days, so many part time FB traders buying something from copart, throwing it together and passing it on, with straight cars making top money it's the only way to make money for some people, virtually no one at all goes to the extent of Rob and Chris and tbh to suggest that they do is pretty naive

That hit and run car doesn't have to be done by the insurance company. I would just get it repaired off my own back. Getting it done by insurance means everyone loses out in the long-term
Watch all the vids, great entertainment. Saw you mention car tax as a feature in your value chat yesterday with your comment that £30 quid a month was something to take into account. I run a 56 plate xtrail auto 2.5 petrol and as you say they love an xtrail down here and they love an auto and low miles requirement should mean petrol is best. I'm just paying my annual tax and it's £615 yes SIX HUNDRED & FIFTEEN quid. So watch out you don't get stuck with one like mine.
Another great video james have you fault of getting some subtle number plate stickers that go on bottom of number plate with chops garage with phone number free advertising
Saying cat cars are ok mate isn't how it is, most are bodged, the value, according to the auction we use when I asked for a value is half cap guide, they take some shifting, its worse now people can see the pictures of them at the salvage yard, we've got a 16 plate xe jag, bought for 6k including fees previously repaired, it's OK but knee deep in filler in places, Co parts pictures showed just a sill cover off (?) we bought it, turns out it was actually a hard hitter that was the cat s, repaired and re copart d a few mths later, so a total con, anyway, can we sell it, no, straight it would be 8k min, can't get 5k,had 4k offered, I'd deffo not go anywhere near cat stuff these days, in the 90s that's all we did from a bodyshop, but hpi reports were the thing of fiction then, also if things go wrong you don't want to be in the position of selling a write off.
I can only call it from my experience and I started out in the Copart stuff and bought many Cat Cars, never had an issue selling them or post sale. As said I think if bought for the right price they represent great value. Plenty of non cat cars out there slapped full of mud with crappy panel gaps.
@@ChopsGarage I know mate, you've built up a great business, I'd not be spoiling your high standing with cat cars, if things go pear shaped on one it can spoil all your good work, you just don't need to get them, you've realised how time consuming buying em damaged are, so you don't do that much now I've noticed, I think the market for them is even worse now due to CV (your fault, ha, ha) and the like showing pictures of the damage, imagine the scenario of selling a cat car, it's in a crash, somebodies hurt and it comes out it's a damage repairable, you'll be copping for it, stick to legit straight cars, fully checked over and you can hold your head up, this games so dodgy now, look at me with that freeloader, imagine if it'd been a cat car? days have gone mate in punting out write offs, one bad one and you've lost your rep, anyway its up to you bud, on a lighter note I'll count up the sales this weekend and tell you how I've done, wishing you a good Christmas, you've done great this year.
@@ChopsGarage humorous story bud, on the iow land rover, remember the 250 quid handbrake repair? Well I parked it on my parents drive, last notch, oh thought I, got out and I ran down the drive, luckily it ran into some earth before doing damage, wonder if I should sue? Ha, ha.
When you are self employed it's hard not to keep working when there is demand, you never know when it might drop off. The trouble is you can end up working even harder to try and drum up some interest when things do go quiet.
Just because a car is up for a price on Autotrader doesn't mean that the seller will get it. I'd wager you gave less than £2K for that Merc. Not a criticism, just saying....
To be fair its irrelevant what I paid for it when we are discussing its resale. Id agree it does not mean they will get exactly that but when you have multiple examples all pretty much the same , rather than just one standing out well above, its a good indicator the real value is not far off.
@@ChopsGarage To be fair it is totally relevant as your channel is about the buying as well as retailing cars, hence the occasional spread sheet section (you did lots when down at Alfa Reg). Anyway, as stated, you're in business to make money which no one should have issue with. Would be interesting to know where Autotrader gets their guide price from. Is it average price asked? They would have no access to actual price received. Seasons Greetings to you and yours.
@@SteveDull I meant as regards the question of its value mate. Yes often share purchase price. Just saying in terms of its sale value has no relevance thats all. I think it pulls from CAP and Glasses as only does it for cars up to about 10yrs old. If on asking price should do it on any age Id say

@@ChopsGarage dad's focus was a week old got hit by a woman while sat at traffic lights it's now on the register
@@Ricey1987 mmm strange
Something wrong there because they don’t go on the register at all.
Seasons greetings. Given how particularly good condition that ASX is in I reckon you're underpricing it.
Normal for me eh lol
Very true indeed

Hi James I think the white car would be cat N if written off, panel damage isn’t classed as structural..
Yes bud I know this but as per vid this seemed to go into the sill which is classed as structural
All winter tyres make a noise. Winter tyres should be mandatory from Nov to March like other countries.
Winter tires are not mandatory in most countries. I've lived in 7 countries, not one of them had mandatory winter tires. Even in US states with more extreme weather than most countries, they are not mandatory. Chains may be required on really bad snow days, but that's about it.
Perhaps in rural areas but not needed in populated areas really, never had any in 30 years driving, or needed any 👍
@@ckm-mkc ok well take a nice drive threw Germany into Poland / Austria / Estonia / Latvia / Lithuania all required. Not even all season tyres will do has to he winter
@Phil Harrison I forgot 2 cm of snow and the uk grinds to a halt. I never knew what snow was until I visited Poland and Austria. 6 inch in one night and that's in the city. Summer tyres are for summer use
@@acorndogs904 problem is folk don't know how to drive in the UK in snow, it is properly rare where we live, but when it comes no one knows what to do 🤔😁

@@ChopsGarage you too James & family! Keep up the good content, loving the regular updates 👍 so great to see both sides of car dealing and how you respond to any issues with customers
using a VPN such as surf shark for accessing geo-looked is against the terms of service for most content providers, your promoting people breaching that and potentially breaching copyright laws. They also do not offer end-to-end security so don't count on them. Simply stick to your skill "cars", don't get involved in promoting what you don't fully understand and giving false information.
Not a chance using this the way I have breaks any copywrite laws lol!! I suggest you stick to what YOU know as its clearly not copywrite law lol! Oh by the way there are 2 people on a list of who gets to tell me what to do and your not one of them lol!
@@ChopsGarage I said "potentially breaching copyright laws"... but your breaching terms and conditions of service if accessing geo-locked content. How long have you been in the computer networking industry? I'm racking 30 years... Where does the VPN break out, have you done due dilligence on their staff and where are their DC's located. Considered MiM after the traffic leaves their DC's?
may as well just tell everyone to clone the numberplates you have on show and use your details to clone a car.
lol! Come on you are just being silly now! That's like asking did I do due diligence on the engineers at Hyundai and independently verified the quality of the steel they use before I recommended an i10! I know you are desperate to trying and show people you have knowledge in a subject but you are stretching it here bud!

That made me laugh when you started looking at the Mercedes CLK prices on Autotrader.
You didnt want to pay £4000 for my CLK55 AMG with only 35000 miles last week!!! Typical trader. Greedy. Who doesnt understand what things are really worth. At least you did well this year!!!
Oh dear Phil , lets be clear, you where offering me a car that had been sat for 2 years and was a unknown project! I offered you £3500 , with transport about to cost me £500, you never even told me you wanted 4k!
If your belief is that I am a typical greedy dealer why approach me at all!!
I told you that if you wanted a serious increase in value to go and get the car repaired and mot'd!! But instead you decide to spend nothing and ask someone else to take the risk but pay you full price! I think its clear who is being greedy! And for someone you claim does not understand what things are worth I seem to have made a pretty good crack of selling hundreds of cars lol!!!!!!! Sorry put making yourself look a right plum here!
@@ChopsGarage AS you said i beg to differ. I never said i wanted £4000. You offered me £3995 which i laughed at!!
You also quoted a CLK55 on car and classic with 25000 something miles on for £10000 A MINTER!! You said!!I searched and searched for this car that was no where to be seen.
