I'm a woman and a senior citizen without a lot of skills, and this worked great for me. I was able to fix the touch pad on my GE Profile after watching this video. It wasn't difficult and I also cleaned the ribbon cables with a Qtip dipped in alcohol before inserting them back into place. I had originally called an appliance repairman who told me over the phone that it wasn't worth the price of a service call and to just buy a new microwave.
8 years late to the party lol I just moved into a rental with one of these microwaves and kept getting a sensor error. This quick fix completely solved the problem and I now have a working microwave. Thank you so much! You just saved me so much money as all appliances in my rental are “as is”.
Thanks very much. Our unit died, tried a local repair place, called GE who tried to sell me a new microwave. Your video saved us over $300 - and I look like a hero to my wife to boot,
This was the exact fix my microwave needed! The #1 and power level buttons no longer worked. The hardest part was getting my cover off. Very weird hex screws with a bump in the middle. I popped up the strip holder, pulled the strip out and wriggled it back in, popped the holder back in place. Plugged it in and bingo! All the buttons worked! Replaced cover, put it back on its shelf, plugged in and it STILL worked! LOL It was 12:31 am, so it required 3 1's. (a.m. used the 1) Needlesstosay, I was able to set the time and I checked all the buttons including power level. It's all working. Saved me from having to replace oven or the touchpad. Thanks!
It worked. After calling two repair shops and both have decided to not repair microwaves due to cost of the parts - brilliant - thank you so so much. Great service to all of us.
Dude, you're awesome!!! Just moved into a new house with one of these microwaves above our oven. Kept getting the "KEYPAD SHORTED" error message whenever we plugged it in. Called the service number listed on the microwave, but then I thought a better solution would be to try Google first. Your video was the first to show up on Google, in my search. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the easy to follow steps and for saving us $150!
I got a quote (for just the parts) for electronic control panel and keypad for $160. Home Depot sells a completely new microwave oven for $178. But instead, I tried this simple fix and it WORKED! Thank you so much for posting this!
I used your method before with instant success. This time, I had to remove all the connectors, reset both the large and small ribbons (GE Profile 2.0), plugin and unplug the unit. The first time plugged in, the unit showed the 88:88, second time the clock - I just kept repeating - touching the clock keypad. Finally it beeped and I set the clock. Had to unplug the unit to reconnect the ground wire (little green one) just because I had left it off. Thought I would be back to square one. BUT - I reattached the unit and vent, plugged in, reset the timer and so far, it is working. Diligence paid off. Thank you for the video, and the comments. I read through them all for more specifics. I have a feeling I'll be back! Merry Christmas 2014 and thank you jeahman316!
This video was a real problem solver. We are in Mexico and the local appliance store that sells this product does not supply parts. I tried the solution in this video now our microwave works great!
Can't get over it. Had it unplugged for a day or two and then plugged it back in like the video guy said. Seems to work now. If it works okay through Monday then I will bring my substitute counter-top mico back to the basement! I already did my searches for new touchpad panel and now I saved over $170 for parts! Thank you for the repair tip.....
I checked all the videos for this kind of issue on RUclips. And this video is the best! Even beginners can handle the operation and it fixed the issue in 1 second.
SAVED me a lot of money thank you. My problem was the ribbon connecting the smart board to the touch control panel was pinched and the microwires were damaged. I cut just a little bit of the damaged ribbon with a very sharp scissors and it worked for me. I used a magnifying glass to view the damaged wires and assess how much to cut.
Thanks for the Harlem microwave repair! I nearly stopped my boyfriend from attempting it but he said he saw your video and so I let him at it! I he fixed it in less than 15 minutes. I'm thrilled!!
Alfred Bryant tutorials like this have saved me so much money over the years, if these personal yt channels had a tip button, like a digital tip jar, I would gladly give $5 here and there, since yt doesn't pay the little guys.
This fixed my problem!!! What I actually did was unlock the ribbon cable (by lifting up the two locking tabs on the sides), remove the cable, and then replace and relock it. I’m amazed and happy that this worked! Thank you !!!
AWESOME FIX! Our microwave is about one year old... and has tripped the breaker multiple times. This last time, it did not come back on... outlet was working, so decided to check it out online before calling repair guy in. Video was easy to follow, walked me thru steps (with minor changes for my model) and easy fix! We placed electrical tape on the metal edges, then removed and re-installed the BUS cable. Bingo! That easy!
Worked like a charm. You can pull the ribbon straight out and back in.... It didn't work the first time... I put it in and out about 5 times and that did the trick.. Thank you!
It worked! I wasn't hopeful because the ribbon did not appear loose, but I disconnected and reconnected everything and just made sure the ribbon was tight and -VOILA! Success!! Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for the info and quick fix. I have been dealing with limited digits and functions for a year. Thought that it was the steam from the pots below that was messing with the electronics. My microwave is a Bosch but it came apart the same way and the fix worked. Thanks again!
Thank you! This fix just repaired our Magic Chef microwave. The stop/clear button was not working. FYI-As someone else already mentioned, if you lift up on the sides of the connector you can then pull the ribbon out easily.
Worked great for me. It helped me fix the "Service Panel shorted and may need service" in my RV's Microwave. Due to my specific installation, I also had to also loosen the 3 additional top screws in my cabinet and tilt the microwave down in the front before I could access the screws holding the vent cover and then access the single screw holding the service panel. If you also need to do this, have an appropriate size piece of wood to rest the microwave on in the tilted posiition and a helper to hold it while you cut the wood to the size needed before removing the last screw keeping it from tilting down. Before seeing this video I was planning to buy a new Microwave. I had no problem viewing it. The ribbon cable connector top part of the connector pulls up to loosen the ribbon cable and pushes down to lock it into place. This is referred to as a ZIF (Zero Insertion force) connector. After you lift up on the top part of the connector the cable is easy to pull in and out. While pushing it down into the connector, then push the top part of the connector back down to lock in the ribbon cable. If that doesn't work you might also try wiping the end of the ribbon cable with Alcohol to clean it. Sometimes cables like this have different connection material than the connector they plug into and this can cause some corrosion over time through Galvanic corrosion caused when dissimilar material are in contact with each over. Reseating or cleaning the connection can help fix the problem. Same problem often seen on LCD, Keyboard, track point cables etc. But, I was surprised GE would use a ZIF connector on a Microwave. Typically a ZIF is a low profile connector used where space is limited. But space is not a problem in a Microwave. IMO using a ZIF where space is not a premium is either a poor cost saving decision or an attempt to drive more service revenue and /or earlier appliance replacement by people not willing to tackle a repair themselves or spend money for a repair cost that would be almost as much as a replacement Microwave would cost.
You can also clean the ribbon cable contacts w a pencil eraser. Didn't work for me until after I did that. Thanks for the video, saved me a bunch of time trying to figure out the disassembly!
I've dealt with a microwave that I thought was just a huge piece of shit for like 2 years because I just put up with unplugging it and having it work intermittently for a minute or so at a time. It also would turn on by itself without anyone even in the same room. Then we'd get the keypad shorted message and have to unplug and restart. Watched this today and figured what the hell. Now we've got a fully functioning microwave again. Awesome work.
It was simple and effective. My boyfriend was thinking of calling a technician but I was faster and found your clip. Nothing like good research on time!!! It worked and since he saved at least $150, he will pay me dinner. Everyone wins!!! Thank you so much !!! I wish we could find clips like this to fix everything!!!
The problem is, I believe, that the ribbon cable(s) from the control panel to the works rubs against the frame, wears off the insulation, and shorts out (possibly when it gets wet). I fixed my Samsung (I think GE re-badges it) by putting a piece of electrical tape on the frame and, for good luck, slipped a piece of scrap paper between the two ribbon cables. The MW has worked for years. Thanks for reminding me how to get the grill and the control panel off.
This works. It saves me $220. The only thing is not very clear is that you need to pop up the white clip in order to reseal the ribbon cable. Just pushing the cable down without this step only solved my problem temporarily.
Thank You! I was about to order the expensive replacement part and decided to try your fix - nothing to lose - and don't you know, the darn thing is working just fine!
It worked!! Thank you!! I have a different model GE. The 36" wide model. Anyway it worked like a charm. Had to remove a few more screws. Funny thing was my connectors looked like they were plugged in. But pulled them off. Reinserted them. Plugged it in and voila. It started right up. Thanks!! Saved a repairman trip.
Yes!!! I just charged this little old lady $4500 just to do this for her. Thank You!!! Hahaha just kidding you clowns. It's my GE microwave and now my wife thinks I'm so smart. I was honest and showed her your video. Thank you bro!!! ❤
Superb! I tried this on my 15 year old Kenmore combination microwave-stove hood. Some keys worked, most did not. This problem has happened before, usually after cooking a soup or stew on the stove, which generates a lot of humidity under the microwave oven, and previously it has "fixed itself" over a period of days. But not this time. I removed the grill above the oven door, removed the one screw at the top of the touch pad-control panel, pushed the panel up and let it swing down perpendicular to the oven bottom, unseated and reseated the ribbon cable. That's all it took to make all the keys function again. Total repair time was less than 5 minutes. jeahman316, you rock!
Your video helped me get mine up and running by your suggestion, early in the video, to unplug and plug back in. Worked like a charm and I appreciate being reminded of that as a fix for some electronic devices. THANK YOU!!
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH IT WORKED AND SO EASY ! I assumed I needed to get a repair man and spend 200.00 or have to buy a new microwave NO WAY THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the tip about the microwave touch pad /ribbon cable connection! Only part of the Panasonic microwave touch pad stopped working, but that was the solution.
Hey. You just saved me significant money. I had different GE model, but followed the basic steps and it took me less than 30 minutes. Works great nowThanks.
I was glad to find your video because my touchpad is doing the EXACT same problem you were talking about. I have tried and tried to push that ribbon in. I even took it out and re -inserted it like one of the other commenters mentioned....and still NOTHING. Frustrating. I am so SICK of DIGITAL appliances. Whoever decided to put computers in appliances is an idiot. Nothing lasts anymore. My dishwasher is only a couple years old and its touchpad is going out. Washer: same story. Now the microwave!
Thank you for this informative video. You Tube Academy does it again! I was able to fix my problem while l also learn how to remove the control panel. Kudos to you!!
Thanks so much for this video. Worked great for my model JVM6177SF1SS, once I found another video showing me how to remove the panel. Reseated the ribbon cable, put it all back together, and good to go!
Thanks a bunch. Mine is a Samsung Over the Range with the touch pad on the door. I just fixed mine. The problem was not a loose connection. The connection wire had rubbed against the inside cover and had worn out. When I took the cover off, the buttons will all work. But when I re-installed the cover, the buttons will stop working. So, what I did was to put some electric tape on the worn part of the connector wires. Voila, it worked even when the cover was replaced. So far, it is working and I hope it stays that way. Hope it helps someone.
The white base that won't come off of the circuit board has two little clips, one on each side. Lifting each one with a flathead screwdriver loosens the ribbon for you. Conversely, once you remove the remove and reinsert the cable, push the little clips down and it'll help lock in place.
+Michael Schnell .... correction, it's actually one long clip. So when lifting it, lift it a little on each side, going back and forth, until it's lifted about a 1/8 inch. Same for securing it back down: push down a little on the left, a little on the right, until completely down.
Thankyouverymuch for the excellent information...saved me the $ i didn't have, to replace the touchpad that didn't need replacing. God Bless you for choosing to share on RUclips.
jeaman316, I was skeptical, but it worked! Thank you! One comment, there is a lock on the ribbon cable plug, the top of the plug has a little collar that pops up to release tension on the cable. I cleaned the cable, replugged it, and the microwave is working. Thanks again!
Thank you! GE microwave "Keypad Shorted" message. It seemed secure when I took it out but after reseating works like new. Saved me a chunk of change and a big hassle!
dude thank you so much! i have a Sunbeam. when i checked the ribbon, it actually did seem to be securely in place, but i pressed on it anyway, and the microwave's working. thanks again, man!
Truely thanks for the video my wife is so happy now and it’s the first thing I actually fixed lol took two months to look up a video right before buying a new one
I have a GE profile microwave with some of the touchpad not working ---defrost, stop cancel button ect,,, I removed the front panel as shown the video. I took photographs of the connections on the panel with my iPhone, then unplugged each connection, one at a time, then plugged it back to the board. It appears that vibration from the fan as well as closing the microwave door over time causes loose connection in the panel circuit, which causes the touchpad to stop working. It works great now!! Saved $700 in repair cost!! Remember to unplug the power cable before you start working on it!!
IT WORKS ! .....and then the micrOwave works ! LOL thought it died as it is not new, had nothing. leaving it unplugged a while didn't reset it--so opening" the control panel and simply checking connections WORKED. ...maybe years of kids SLAMMING the door shut "troubled" things. MANY THANKS

Hello, instead of wiggling and jiggling the ribbon, pull up on the sides of the holder and it will lift up allowing the ribbon to come out or go back in. Once you reseat it then press the sides down and it will lock the ribbon back into place.
Thank you, I would have taken the whole thing down and probably still not known how to get it apart as I did not know to slide the vent guard. So... Thanks a Lot!!

Worked amazingly, even with a very different model GE microwave
It worked. After calling two repair shops and both have decided to not repair microwaves due to cost of the parts - brilliant - thank you so so much. Great service to all of us.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! THIS METHOD JUST FIXED A KENMORE MICRO WAVE. YOU ARE A BLESSING.
My friend you have saved us much money and heart ache for posting this video, bless you!

You saved me a lot of money. Great work. Thanks for sharing. All mine needed was to be unplugged and re plugged in.
Thanks!!! This seems to have fixed my keypad issues!! My microwave hasn't worked in years!!
Dude you just saved me so much grief! Much respect for not only finding a fix, but also sharing it. Thanks!
MisterDoughboy you're welcome!
It worked!! Thank you!! I have a different model GE. The 36" wide model. Anyway it worked like a charm. Had to remove a few more screws. Thank you so much I showed my husband this video and it worked!! Saved us from buying a new microwave !!
Followed your lead and carefully secured all the wire connections. Worked like a charm. Back to normal operation.
I could not figure out how to remove vent. So far so good on my buttons. Thanks man!
I just followed your direction and my microwave is working perfect again. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the tip about the microwave touch pad /ribbon cable connection! Only part of the Panasonic microwave touch pad stopped working, but that was the solution.
This worked like a charm! I had to use contact cleaner on the ribbon and socket to get it working consistently. Thanks so much for this post.
Just wanted to say thanks. Surely save me a few bucks. Easy fix on the ribbon cable. Worked like a champ.
Thank you! It took me less than 10 mins to fix this issue. Great video!
1000 thanks! 🙏🏻saved me a lot of headache & $465 to replace it!
You're welcome! Glad this video helped!
Same for us!!! THANK YOU!!
Had a message of a possible keypad short. This worked perfectly! Thanks for posting.
You just saved me several hundred dollars. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Thanks- this worked. I was not ready to go the whole weekend without a microwave.
Thanks, got me back in business in less time than it took to call my home warranty company and saved me $125. Whoohoo!
Hey. You just saved me significant money. I had different GE model, but followed the basic steps and it took me less than 30 minutes. Works great nowThanks.
Thank you, I followed your instructions and now my microwave is working. God bless you for sharing.

Thanks so much for this video. Worked great for my model JVM6177SF1SS, once I found another video showing me how to remove the panel. Reseated the ribbon cable, put it all back together, and good to go!
AWESOME, cleaned the ribbon cable with some contact cleaner, all the buttons work. THANKS VERY MUCH!!
Still using that microwave?
Worked perfectly! I removed the ribbon cable, reseated it and secured the header. Thanks a lot for posting!
So, that worked perfectly. Saved me a headache.
Was just about to spend $300 on a new microwave. Thanks for the help!
Tremendously helpful spot-on, saved $250. Thank you, you're the man
Dude...thanks! This worked for my micro/oven double unit. Different disassembly but same result. The internet is awesome!
That worked! Thanks so much! You saved me time and money and I'm very grateful. Thanks for posting this.
I just fixed mine and it was brand new in a condo I just moved in. Shame on GE and kudos to you!! Happy New Year! :D
THANKS! This worked. If you lift up the sides of the connector, the ribbon slides out easily. Very helpful video.
Worked just like you showed. Thanks, you saved me having to buy my wife a new microwave for Christmas. Lol
Seating the ribbon cables worked for me. Thanks so much for posting.
You rock! I owe you money! It did work. Although the ribbon seemed in tight, I loosened it and re-inserted.
IT WORKS ! .....and then the micrOwave works ! LOL
thought it died as it is not new, had nothing.
leaving it unplugged a while didn't reset it--so opening" the control panel and simply checking connections WORKED.
...maybe years of kids SLAMMING the door shut "troubled" things.
MANY THANKS
yes I did, helped him out many times.

Thank you very much. It took about 2 minutes and worked like a charm!
This saved me the cost of a new oven; thanks loads.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video. I did exactly as you said and my problem is fixed! You rock!
Hello, instead of wiggling and jiggling the ribbon, pull up on the sides of the holder and it will lift up allowing the ribbon to come out or go back in. Once you reseat it then press the sides down and it will lock the ribbon back into place.
Worked like a freaking charm! Thanks so much, I was about to order a replacement oven. No need!
Thanks a lot for posting this video. Followed your instructions from the video and my GE Microwave is working again. Saved me a repair call.
This worked for me on a Kenmore. I thank you very much for your help.
