I've known this story for years, and recognized it from the very beginning, but oh man hearing Mr. Ballen tell it in detail really brought it to life. It doesn't matter at all if the material is familiar. This guy could read my grocery list in a way that would horrify me.
Him and mike over at That Chapter always comes up with juicy tidbits i never knew, in spite of me being very familiar with the case...
Especially vegan grocery lists.
Same!
Ahhh the deadliest disease; Physician's hubris
midwives might not be as "educated" as doctors, but women have been birthing babies way before doctors existed 😂
No midwife might not be as educated as doctors, but most of them are more educated. I would rather have a midwife deliver my baby as opposed to an arrogant, over educated doctor.
A gentleman’s hands don’t get dirty. Boy, that’s the height of arrogance!
The arrogance of man has caused a lot of damage throughout human history lol No doubt.
Totally heartbreaking and terrifying. So many children who grew up motherless, so much generational trauma created, from something so easily preventable 💔
wow!!! they didn't wash their hands before exiting the MorgUe? NASTY!
Morgue 😂😂😂 I'm sorry, I know that I'm a massive pain in the butt. Ocd. But other than being an annoying moron, yes, I agree, that is SO gross.
@@Danica.Powell haha oops! But I fixed it take a look 👀 lol
@CindyMay 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you did indeed. It's not actually important, it's hardly a word you need to spell on a regular basis and nobody else would have noticed lol, I'm just a dick 😂😂😂
I remember this story from nursing school. One of my professors would tell all of her first year students about this.
This still goes on - I worked in a private facility for the very wealthy, and staff was dissuaded from wearing gloves so clients felt less like they were in a hospital versus a five star hotel - to keep up appearances for the families (and justify the cost) while risking everyone's health
In 1865, the increasingly outspoken Semmelweis allegedly suffered a nervous breakdown and was committed to an asylum by his colleagues. In the asylum, he was beaten by the guards. He died 14 days later from a gangrenous wound on his right hand that may have been caused by the beating
People, wash your hands....
Pausing at 15 minutes exactly, this is gonna be a washing of hands issue isn’t it
Another awesome , yet terrifying true tory. The best part about all your stories is the fact that they're true Thank you so much John, GOD Bless you and your yours....😇😇😇
I like when you said we can't escape our bodies. I'm a nurse and I'm going thru a bad health and I was diagnosed for 2 years.
Eww, imagine dying because a man didn't wash his hands and touched you.
The character “Dr. Sarah Gunning” has a very compelling monologue about this very story in the amazing show ‘Midnight Mass’
This was a great history lesson for my freshman nursing students.
the one place we can't ESCAPE...our own bodies
This was great! In uni, they mention this doctor and how they discovered the routine of handwashing between clients for the best health outcomes... they spoke very little about HOW he came to his conclusions ❤ this
Seems like simple common sense now doesn't it...such a true tragedy that so many had to die before the common knowledge of cleanliness & it's relation to communicable disease was standard practice. Something that even children in our time understand...(COVID 19 drove home this fact in the most recent time). It seems outrageous to us now that Drs failed to wash & sterilise their hands, especially after performing autopsy, before coming into contact with a subsequent patient: but we must keep in mind that they simply didn't know. Every one of the tragic deaths in early medicine gave us the information & knowledge that we use today & are the true hero's of modern medicine. RIP to every one of them with great thanks.
LOL what a spoilerrrrr wtf haha 😅
@@rosejanson5688 huh?????
@@stuartfishman719 lol I just saw your reply; sorry!!
Lol you spoiled the end haha. I think I was halfway through the video and was hoping they wouldn't die and then they all did!!
Before latex gloves were invented and got to be used , surgeons were supposed to wash their hands, scrubbing them with soaped brushes before any operation. The areas of knuckles and finger nails were treated with iodine. One can imagine what it did to their hands!
That is still the protocol - at least it’s supposed to be - then put on the gloves. I wore them while working in the lab all the time.
@@depnewshoundsupposed to be, right! Honest never saw them do it, ever. They wash their hands of course, but not that thoroughly.
I read a biography of Dr. Joseph Lister in grade school. I don't think he gets enough credit for his huge contribution to Medicine: Listerine.
No way an OB is also performing autopsies…
A man*slices open rotting flesh* with his bare hands
Also a man * gentleman’s hands are always clean” 😡😡🤬🤬and the fact that no one cared to investigate why so many women were dying at a literal educational medical facility smh 🤦🏾♀️
Insane in the membrane (wow it’s always truly horrific. I wish we could talk about lambs or something. Nice kittens or something) excellent videos every single time keep doing what you do
Dr Semmelweiss was actually forced into an insane asylum. When he tried to leave, a scuffle ensued and his hand got cut. Subsequently, the cut turned gangrenous and he died in his 40's.
Having had 11 children myself, I'm grateful for medical staff who wash their hands.
Didn't listen to the end did you?
What a crazy story 😯😯! Thank you, #MrBallen for sharing this story, with us.
They didnt even *rinse* their hands covered in literal gunk??
Hard to believe, isn't it ? I don't like it when my hands feel dirty and apparently there are those who don't like their hands to feel clean...
They had to clean their hands so so many times a day. So they started neglecting it. Also there was no concept of germs.
WHY ARE THESE MY DRUG OF CHOICE
But they're a Great Choice !!! They're not fattening, they won't make you hallucinate, they won't cause you to lose your job, your relationship, your home, your bank account, you won't get arrested at a checkpoint,, you won't get arrested in a sting operation, your teeth won't fall out, .. As addictions go, this is one of thee best !!! GOD Bless you and yours...
Thankful to live in the 21st century..
One conversation with a midwife
Funny how as a tattoo artist I’m already a more qualified doctor than then.. just beyond ridiculous
Childbed Fever aka Ignorant Negligence
as soon as you said semmelweiss i knew what it was about.
Scary when you consider that i am a professional lead chef and i wash my hands for several minutes like 40 times a day maybe more before putting on gloves and rewashing between changing gloves. That is the law and these medical people were'nt. Seriously WTF. SMH!!!!!
Thank you very much & may GOD Bless you ! I rarely eat out for that very reason, the personal hygiene of the kitchen staff,/chef. I attended a culinary Institute for nearly a year, I dropped out 3 weeks before graduation, when I realized I couldn't cope, I also don't eat out...
And where is florence nightingale when you needed her
The "Moors" knew of germs, they taught Europeans to bathe. B1
Nevermind that the midwives should know more, they were women lol. Keep up the good work love❤I love these! I wonder if that's way there's an option for birth plans now.
Yo
The one place we all can't espace...Our own bodies!.
@JuneGirl34 it is spelled ESCAPE
This dude HAS to be paying for YT to force his videos from all his channels into my feed. I keep selecting to not have his videos recommended but they keep popping up. I gotta block this guy.
What's with the shitty musical interludes?! Even on your regular stories you need a terrible music break. I don't get it! Fantastic story... Here's 20 seconds of the worst free music we could find for no good reason... End of fantastic story.
Someone has stolen this from amazon music and added s hi tty music 😩
Then pay for the real thing
@@Meta.Empress amazon music has a free section where Mr Ballen’s podcasts are available.
@@Meta.Empress That'd be silly. He can just watch here and comment his disapproval.
