Kate your scarf is beautiful. I love James brogue, could listen for hours. You did a lovely job selecting colors and weaving. I enjoyed this so much and wish for you good health wearing your scarf. 😘
How beautiful I am just sitting here as a beginner quilter and have Kate "movies" on. Thinking about how neat she is that she tries all kinds of crafts and she is such a great Artisan.
Joseph Reid thank you so much Joseph! There are some mistakes which jump out at me when I look closely, but it’s still no favourite thing ever! I sometimes wear it inside too! 😂❤️😊
That is simply SPECTACULAR! Kate, it is so Amazing what you accomplish. Love the color combination as well. The footage was captivating. From day one to day two , I couldn't wait to watch you weave. How pleased you must be with the finished product! I'd be over the moon. So you don't "Block" it, you give it a wee Iron. 😁 You must have been hard at work until the very early morning hours. You are such an inspiration. 💜
I must admit I was impatient to get weaving! James said that we would all be weaving by eleven o'clock on day two! I wondered what we would be doing till then! Well... all that careful threading up ... that's what! And no, I asked about blocking, but I just have to wash it (which i have done ) and then give in a 'wee i-ron'!!!
The Last Homely House East of the Sea. Yes... I was loving his brogue when he mentioned the wee i-ron . I'm sure you'll be wearing it with pride as well as thinking of the experience while making it.
What a great video! I love learning about all the things you do, even if hey were a few years ago!! The scarf is beautiful. It came out great! I am glad you were so pleased!
So I have just watched this, Kate, following your Favourite Things video.... and I hope your mending goes well, those pesky dang moths! I have a 4 shaft table loom that I picked up years ago in a secondhand/junk yard, I think it was one of many from a school. For these many years I have been putting off warping, and now, seeing you in this wonderful class, I can see why I feel so hesitant to tackle it! Perhaps with yours and other youtube classes, I may finally summon the courage to make a start! I have woven aplenty on simple frame looms, but this way is a whole new kettle of fish!! Luckily I am now retired... and I do love my days starting with so many options and few time constraints. PS From now on I shall do my 'wee i-roning'' with a nod to James... so love the Scots accent. Blessings and a hug from an Australian on your lime green couch. xoxo
Oh, Kate!! HOW LOVELY!! What an amazing length of fabric you’ve created. I realize this was long, long ago, in the Before Times, but had to chime in with my praise. I was as surprised as you at the relatively muted colors you chose, but they wove into a completely glorious combination that meshes perfectly with your style gestalt.
Wow Kate, love your work. My back wouldn't cope with that weaving business. Good on you for trying yet another craft and thanks for the video. Regards from Oz.
Kate you are a very patient and very talented woman. Oh my goodness I would have been lost at the complexity of this weaving process. It looks really difficult. Who created these amazing machines. Your scarf is gorgeous. The colours were perfect. I admire you girl for tackling that craft. Heavens to Betsy that would have driven me to drink!!! Loved James and his ironing.
It is absolutely lovely, Kate! Thanks for the close up view of the mystery of weaving...and your learning process. There is a song I know that starts "Weaver, weaver weave our threads, whole and strong into your web..." There is such a long history of spinning and weaving...such a great metaphor for living a life. This scarf will bring you many moments of pleasure and warmth.
I love the history ... like with so many crafts born of necessity, they have such simple tools and a whole language all their own. There is a weaving song I love by Steelye Span that was in my head all weekend!
You do a wonderful job of explaining how this works. And it does look like hard work. But the outcome is spectacular! What great colors you chose, they look fabulous together. I really enjoyed these two videos, so thanks for sharing.
I think if you are away from home like I was with all that time dedicated to the task, its easy to give up to it, but if the loom was set up on the table at home I'd never get anything done!
That’s how I am with my crochet. I love to crochet but never have enough time in the day for crocheting as I would like to . Always something to do in the home . God Bless
LOVE the new intro with quilting! Beautiful! ...and very nice weaving--love the twill pattern. Great work! I think you will get warmed thrice: once by the making, once by the wearing and once by the compliment receiving!!
Thank you - it is a very methodical process, not hard work really - just a lot to remember - I had a really good teacher and the videos will remind me if I ever get the chance to do this agin. xx
Sat here watching, randomly look at the time.....yup I’m late for work, meh might aswell keep watching😂 love watching you Kate! Just goes to show -it’s never to late to learn something new.
I studied textiles in Belfast and London back in the early nineties. We never got to hand weave but we set up machines. It really wasn't the same LOL. Thank you. I could watch this stuff all day.
Kate, you are amazing. You are always willing to try something new. I would love to learn how to do that. My daughter and I were at a craft show and she purchased two lovely placemats that were hand loomed. They were a soft aqua and made with a nubby strong yarn. She still uses them today. They would be great in your shop. Linda, PA, USA
Wow what an eye opener weaving is, I hadn't really appreciated How involved it is, I loved watching the whole process and now want to have a go myself. The scarf was so lovely💜
Kate, that is so beautiful!! Such lovely colours that really suit you. I am binge watching you, having been sent your show by a friend, while knitting a cardigan!
That scarf looks amazing already, but it looks so complicated. But you are a smart and fearless woman, I won't not even be able to debate the idea of trying this in my head. 🤣 No thank you. I have a great appreciation for wool now and pro that make things from it. Great Job Kate. My new mentor. Enjoy this learning experience. I will keep Sewing and listening to you.
Oh my goodness Kate. That is just beautiful. You did it! And what a great sport James is. Love his Scottish accent. 😉 This was really fun to watch and see the results of your hard work. 💕xxx
The reward must be Awesome! You made a Beautiful Scarf. I was thinking about Burberry the whole time. Your video assures me that I won't be taking up weaving anytime soon. LOL. I really enjoyed your experience. Thank you. Blessings
I'm so glad you had such a good time at weaving therapy. :) Your scarf is gorgeous. You know I've said that you and my mother are kindred spirits. She also knows how to weave. The clickety-clack of the loom's rhythm is soothing as is listening to you speak at the end of a long day. Thank you!
O.M.G.!!! That is GORGEOUS! I can’t imagine the feeling of having done it yourself! I love how enthusiastic James was for you! Maybe all the tedious effort is worth it. I love the Scottish accent, but my American ear can get lost in a hurry.
Wow Kate, I’m confused just watching 😂 well done , the colours you choose are gorgeous & beautifully done. Loved the way James spoke when explaining how to care for your scarf 🧣😂. Loved your videos showing us your work shop trip. Thank you 🤗 xxx
My Dad used to say, "He who chops his own wood gets warm twice." I think it could also be, "She who weaves her own scarf gets warm twice." That looks like hard work. Beautiful job Kate! Just in time for winter. 👍☺
It's not really big enough to be very thermal, but I love it just the same! I've been wanting to try this for years1 I get round to everything eventually... and now I have to stack wood too! xxx
It's beautiful Kate! Well done! You crossed my mind today, I spent ages in Liberty looking at all of the lovely fabric they have there. I may just have bought a few bits too. ☺️
Watched Part 1 and Part 2 now and you are amazing to pick up this skill. James is a great teacher but this takes some concentration and artistic talent with color. Beautiful scarf!
Recently discovered your channel and am enjoying it so much! I love your happy outlook on life! You make a wonderful life for yourself with all you do ! Thanks for sharing it with us! Always wanted to get a loom for the long winter evenings here in the mountains of North Carolina USA! Cheers
I love people who do things with their own hands! I admire you Kate! You can notice the good things around. Do it and shoot the video! I am from Ukraine, I am pleased to see you. Sorry for bad english.
irina davidova your English is 100 times better than my Ukrainian! Thank you so much for stopping by. I’m going to struggle with those other comments! Google translate?.... ❤️😂😊
Just checked out James' website and the workshop prices are amazingly cheap for the quality of instruction. I'm just sad it is too far away for me to travel. Your piece was gorgeous and although you said you thought it wasn't your thing long term, it looks like you're a natural, Kate!
Beautiful! Sorry to comment on a old video but I can't resist :) not to make some advertising but am an enthusiastic maker who just found your youtube channel. I'm a weaver myself on small and big looms. If you ever want to try weaving again try it on a rigid heddle loom. They are not so overwhelming, you can sit on the couch an weave. simple but super fun and great for using up leftover wool.
Oh Kate thank you for this video. I find weaving fascinating. Unfortunately there is no where around where I live to learns this. I feel like a displaced person! What a beautiful scarf. Those three colours play together nicely. I worked with a woman who originally came from Edinburgh. Of course she would roll her R`s and would pronounce her words differently too. Again thank you.
Thank you! It’s a complicated process that’s for sure. You can learn many things here on RUclips, but not something with so many stages. James was a really great teacher. Xxxxx
Now I want to go to Scotland and learn how to weave. I feel like I'll need 2 different studios. One studio would be for all my textile work, so sewing, quilting, crochet, knitting, needlework, and now weaving. The other space would be for my messier projects, such as painting and pottery. Maybe someday I will get my space.
Kate, absolutely beautiful scarf. I think you and I are sisters, from another mother. We are both doing same things, colors, style, interested in learning a new skill, we just do it. We are Renaissance women!
I would love to learn things like this-- just to know that the knowledge is not lost. These days I want to teach my kids and grandkids how to do/make things the old fashioned way. Not that they HAVE to do it every day, but that they know how things are made and done. Once we get to a very high level of technology, if disaster happens, even the knowledge of how to make necessary stuff from "nothing" could be lost. Sort of a - you don't know what you don't know situation.
That was fascinating Kate and your scarf is gorgeous. My Mother and I learnt spinning at evening classes years ago before my boys were born and she carried on the following year with weaving. My husband made her a table loom and she made some beautiful fabric and then bought herself a second hand rigid heddle loom which she used for several years before arthritis stopped her creativity. I don’t think I have the patience for weaving 😊xx
Once you find your 'thing' you just want to carry on and on - like your mum! Weaving isn't my 'thing' I don't think, but I had a really good time and I'm chuffed with the result. xxx
It seems he enjoyed you as much as you enjoyed his instruction. No surprise as you are just so enjoyable. It's true. There's a lot of pretty tedious work before actually weaving. But did you find the rhythm in the actual weaving that is so rewarding? A bit like sewing. The prep is what allows an enjoyable and rewarding finish. The scarf is beautiful and you'll love it more as you remember the learning experience.
exactly! I LOVE a repetitive task, that slow repeated action, taking care, but almost having your brain out of gear... I have been hand quilting with my daughter in law all afternoon and its been just the same - really relaxing.
Your doing great tension, which is difficult, some of mine looked like an hour glass in the beginning. I visit when I can to a commercial weaver in New Mexico: I mostly do small weaving s now.
How late were you up weaving?? There is nothing more gratifying than to have something wonderful to show for the work you put in. Those colors are so you, well now do you think this is something you might want to continue at home or just something that was great to experience but like the basket making not something you want to do a lot? I just can't say enough how fortunate you are to be able to try all these new skills. xx Angela
I carried on until about 8.30 pm but then my back was hurting so I stopped, I stared again at about 7 am until they turned me out of the place at 11am! ha ha ha! it was either that, or borrow the loom for a couple of weeks and then drive all the way back to Edinburgh .... I wasn't keen on that option, so I just carried on..... I initially thought it would be a way to use my spinning. Now I'm not so sure. I had a great time but the outlay for my own loom is just too much. So it will be another lovely thing i enjoyed doing. xxx
Whow, Kate, That must have been a wonderful course. I think I never understood the steps. A few years ago, I bought a wonderful couch blanket from a hand weaving mill, which was very expensive. Now I can understand even better how much work was needed. Unfortunately, this small family business was closed in the meantime. But I will cherish my blanket. It is always used in autumn and winter, when it gets cooler and uncomfortable inside. How many days did the course go, two or three? In any case, your scarf looks phenomenal and the colors match your other garments. Really great, Kate! The next you can then weave for me. Hahaha .... !!!!! (Little joke on the edge) best regards Claudia
My mother was a trained master tailor, and after her master exam in a very posh shop sewing only model dresses, so every dress was only once. And those clothes were already very expensive at the time. But my mother said back then: For handmade things, no matter what kind they are, you'll never be able to ask for the price you actually demand. But it is much smarter to spend more money for really good quality than to buy cheap things three times a year for little money, which quickly break down. That's definitely my opinion on this topic. Are you going to buy a loom? In the next video you have to put on your new scarf. I found these two videos absolutely interesting and exciting. (Which of course all your others are too) Lovely wishes Claudia
Your scarf turned out lovely! I'm glad you had a get away and a new experience. How long was the drive from your place to Edinburgh? Had you been there before? I hope you had time for some site seeing too.
J B I did have a good time, it’s just under three hours in the car. I know Edinburgh quite well, so no sight seeing this time. Lots of colour though! Xxx
Here in the States there is little, manmade, that is more than 250 years old, so to be able to get in the car and see the antiquities of Europe is amazing to me. I just now "happened" to see some film about backstrap looms used by the Mayans. Thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't considered that as an option for more weaving at home.
J B I think the desire to learn about weaving was to use my hand spun yarn in different ways. The table loom is expensive, so that is not an option, but I’d be up for trying some alternatives. One to research I think. Thank you xxx
Beautiful..i could listen to him talk all day......GOOD JOB KATE
Kate your scarf is beautiful. I love James brogue, could listen for hours. You did a lovely job selecting colors and weaving. I enjoyed this so much and wish for you good health wearing your scarf. 😘
I love you teaching James to say iron. Fine job on the scarf. And it is so matchy matchy with your life.
The colors you chose are beautiful together! I 💜 the scarf! Beautiful job!
Congratulations Kate on weaving yourself a Beautiful scarf.
I was amazed to see your beautiful scarf!
Great Job Kate!!!!
How beautiful I am just sitting here as a beginner quilter and have Kate "movies" on. Thinking about how neat she is that she tries all kinds of crafts and she is such a great Artisan.
Beautiful scarf, Kate!! Such an accomplishment!
Wonderful of you to take us along!
Your scarf is so lovely and very dressy. Way to go. Your explanation of the process answered some of the mystery of weaving for me.
What an interesting process Kate ! I like the colors you chose. They compliment your jacket beautifully 💕
Wow! What a beautiful scarf you made. Lovely colors!
Thanks for sharing 🌷
Much Love!
Marvelous! Absolutely MARVELOUS!! Your scarf is gorgeous. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure. So interesting.
It's beautiful! Lovely colour combination! Well done!
Oh Kate! I admit that I gasped as you unrolled it. It is sooo beautiful!! Congratulations! What a wonderful experience!!
So did I! I was worried it would be quite short, but it just kept on unrolling! I was very pleased with the size of it! xxx
Wow...it turned out AMAZING!!! You must be so pleased to have a new scarf for the winter that YOU Made!...😊
Joseph Reid thank you so much Joseph! There are some mistakes which jump out at me when I look closely, but it’s still no favourite thing ever! I sometimes wear it inside too! 😂❤️😊

Beautiful work! Love the colors!
Oh, Kate!! HOW LOVELY!! What an amazing length of fabric you’ve created. I realize this was long, long ago, in the Before Times, but had to chime in with my praise. these looms are Ashford - made in New Zealand they are not too complicated when you have a good teacher xxx

Beautiful job Kate, excellent.
You do a wonderful job of explaining how this works. And it does look like hard work. But the outcome is spectacular! What great colors you chose, they look fabulous together. I really enjoyed these two videos, so thanks for sharing.
How fun. James sure seemed very nice. 🤗
I would need a lot of patience. I could never stick with it long enough to make anything . Good job . ❤️

So it will be another lovely thing i enjoyed doing. xxx
Very nice!
So beautiful, what a great job. Love it. 😊 ❤ Linda Wilde
You’ve got all the lingo! I feel the same way, I love woven fabrics but using the loom is too fussy for me.
Would love to see how you cut the practice bit off and how you finished the ends.
Whow, Kate,
That must have been a wonderful course.
Hahaha .... !!!!! (Little joke on the edge)
best regards
Claudia
I really appreciate how expensive hand made textiles are now that I have made some! I'm sure they should be three times the price! xxx
(Which of course all your others are too)
Lovely wishes
Claudia
Makes me fully appreciate the price of harris tweed
