It was the TV show that first gave me the realisation the devices in my house contained lots of stuff... stuff that was very very interesting. Like the inside of the boiler wasn't just a mysterious box that made weird rumbling noises, and the telly contained all sorts of fun stuff. It might have also been the cause of me taking a screwdriver to everything as a kid to find out what was in it.

UK: Makes fun of America for using Imperial units.
Also UK: Gave America Imperial units.
All jokes aside, though, this was a fascinating video. I was aware that shaft-drive and belt-drive bicycles were far less efficient that chain-drive bicycles, but I had no idea just how versatile and durable chain really is. As a LEGO fan, I often use plastic LEGO chain in my motorized models, and was thus very excited when LEGO recently released a new chain piece in the retro Pac-Man arcade machine set. The new piece allows items to attach to the chain (no welding or melting required!), thus enabling an analog simulation of a game of Pac-Man.

I must tell you Mr. Hunkin, I've also used the "don't drive the pin entirely out of the far plate, and simply join the chain again afterward" on my bicycles my whole life. I've never done any differently, simply because I had no idea it wasn't the proper way in the first place. With a screw type chain tool, it's quite easy and doesn't need to be done on the bench.
Indeed, if it's the pin size that gives you trouble with using a chain tool, perhaps we can simply turn one down

I love this subject. I have been a maintenance mechanic for 35 years. I've always been fascinated by chain driven machinery. I feel at home when the plant machinery is running at full force. The scream of the huge horse power motors along with the deafening sling-n-slang of chain of every size and width. It's called a hostile environment. Since a lot of dust and dirt is generated in the atmosphere, Lube is a dirty word. Never shall a drop of oil ever hit these chains. I'll be coming back this site a lot. Thank You for posting this Tim.

    • @tfm1449
      @tfm1449 3 года назад +1

@@cmmartti Thanks for commenting. Yeah, If managment saw anybody with a can of lube around the machines, you'd be imediantly repremanded. The environment was thick with particulate matter, and dust. The roller chains are ran dry to prevent the dust, and such from sticking to them. Cutter their time being useful in half. Through daily maintenance, we would keep a close eye on them. Some were fitted with sealed bearings in the rollers, but these are very expensive. They manufactered roofing materials.

My dear old dad worked for a small company in the 1970's that made industrial conveyor systems that used the polyurethane belts to drive the rollers on their products. Their sales people were all trained to demonstrate how in a pinch you could replace broken belts without taking the conveyor out of service or even stopping the thing. All you needed was a match to heat the ends of the new belt and then you could jam the ends together before slipping it back onto the pulleys.

Years of experience distilled into 45 minutes. A masterclass. Cant wait for the rest of this series. The secret life was/is one of the best TV shows ever.

Thank you for this, The world needed more of your educational work. Also, I almost spat my tea out when I saw you mention @Matthiaswandel 's site, Woodgears.ca during the plasma cutting bit. Was honestly not expecting that much overlap in my childhood icons and my current youtuber subscriptions. Thanks again

I think about the Secret Life of Machines shows all the time, e.g. when I use a washing machine or take the elevator. Very happy to see this come to light. If covid was the catalyst for this then maybe it's not all that bad.

Interesting. Chain doesn't 'stretch' though - the individual link pins wear and it's that cumulative wear than makes the pitch grow.

The way you join the polyurethane belts is very much like how modern-day polyethylene gas main pipes are joined.

Here in México your Secret Life series were a bit obscure and hard to find. But luckily I found some of them and they were amazingly useful for understanding many objects we use routinely, like the automobile one. I felt so much joy finding them again, so now I can watch them all, and the most joy is to find you are still sharing with us your knowledge. Thank you and lots of love from here!

Perfect timing !!! I have acquired a 1960s potters wheel which has v belts so small that I can’t find anyone who manufactures them. I think it’s time to change the design and tinker with some ideas. It’s a very simple and cool cone design which changes the speed based on downward pressure on a lever which moves the driving wheel down the cone. It’s slipping badly now but won’t be soon. Maybe the polyurethane belt would be a straight swap. Let’s see

That's similar to how continuously-variable transmissions (CVTs) in snow machines and some cars work.

I used to visit the automaton museum in Covent Garden and was so disappointed when it closed. I didn’t realise that your pieces had found a new home. It’s first on my list for a visit once we’re allowed out.

I had no idea the modern round belt was so easy to join, I've seen it used on really OLD stuff, I assume they used a cord of some sort dipped in rubber back then. (1900ish small tools)
Thank you for the lesson, it is much appreciated.
