I walk up and down the High Street on a regular basis exercising my prize winning Dobermann and strangely have never been bothered 😁! I was born in the late 50's and my main memories are from the mid 60's when the town was always busy !
I remember the church, which was torn up - graves and all - and replaced by a job centre, next was the post office, and then the West Bromwich building society. It's sad to see communities being let down by councils across the country. I can remember a time when all the shops were occupied, the markets were full, small independent retailers. Interesting video.
It has declined massively. The vibe is low, run down and in particular this end of West Brom high street feels and looks very very deprived and scummy, not a nice area to walk around let alone shop in.
We have the Labour Council to thank for a lovely job over the last 40 years. They Run Every Town into the ground. Destroyed all the High Streets of every local town. Cash Grab Parking Charges to fund there Waste Full Spending. Which was the final nail in the coffin
Oh ffs 😂😂😂, the classic Labour council blame game. Sure, they've made mistakes, but who donyou think funds local authorities? Central govt of course. Last time i checked, we had 14 yrs of the worst govt of any of our lifetimes.
You paint a very bleak picture of West Bromwich and this can only put people off visiting. I don't think this particular road is any more dangerous than any other locally. I have walked along here in the late evening, albeit not recently and never on my own, but have never felt threatened in any way. I agree that West Bromwich in general is not what it was when I grew up in the 50s and onwards, but you can say the same about many other towns and cities in the UK.
I agree with your sentiments. This was filmed when a murder had been committed just off New Street and Local newspapers do consider the High Street a dangerous area for crime based on police statistics. But personally I have not really been threatened and I will be doing a late night High Street walk soon. Many thanks for your comment
There are some very scummy places in the UK - but compare them to the depressed parts of (for example) America... and remember that to be born British is to win the lottery of life. (less true than it was 150 or so years ago when the quote was coined by Cecil Rhodes - but still pretty true).
I had a ride on my mobility scooter the other day to go up to Dartmouth Park , usually going via the new square shopping area, but for some strange reason I went along the old high st towards Dartmouth square and what a shock, must be 5-6 years since I was last up there, a real dump, no real shops anymore, Woolworths, Wilko, Burton's, Marks and Spencer , Marsh and Baxter, J W Henns , the jewellers ran by Michael Henn ( Used to work there in the early seventies ) , all gone to be replaced by a more select mix of food stores catering for a more diverse mix of shoppers from every corner of the world, diversity is good but not at the expense of the destruction of our town centres around the country, any way I then went off up Bull Street quickly riding to get away from this dump they call West Bromwich Town......Shame

I am not being racist here but I walked this route yesterday , where have all the white people gone? The only white people I saw were in the pub?!
