Paint the green on the inside Rachel, will look so finished then. Oh you have such patience, girlfriend! What needs to be done is to find the spot or places Cora is slipping out and fix them! She is coming and going at will. And please don't wait to get her in to see the vet. Can't wait to see the chicken round up and how they like their new home! Thanks for sharing with us, always so much to do and so little time living on the homestead!
Love to see that you did the "foldable roost" thing, with the hinges and hooks. No idea how many people suggested that, but I was one of them. Will be interesting to see if the chickens prefere the narrow or broad side to roost on. I like Rachel's idea for the bigger door, to sweep the old out directly into a gorilla cart, and also the idea to paint the entrance the same color as the outside.
Agree. I'd go ahead and fix that bigger door to sweep stuff out of.. Happy Wife, Happy Life! Since she'll be doing the hard part, make it easier on her Kevin
You should paint the wall behind the roosting posts with the same stuff you painted the floors with so when they poo while roosting it would be easier to clean
Also the roost bars too. Coat everything they could poop on with the paint. Awesome chicken coop. Whatcha gonna do with mix breed pups? Just curious. Thanks as always for sharing and God Bless ❤️🙏🫠
We used to raise reg. Blk.Lab hunting dogs. We never realized our female was coming in heat but she was wandering. We finally locked her up in a kennel and surprise she delivered 12 half poodle puppies. That did it she went in and was spayed.
Using the black rubbery paint would be good on the walls behind the roosts and on the roost steps also. It would make it easier to spray wash the poo away. Looking good!! It's a posh chicken coop for sure! Best wishes from northern Illinois. 😊
I agree with Rachel, I think the wider would be better so they can keep their feet warmer when they roost , but I’m not sure how cold it gets there. Anyway the experiment will be interesting.
I agree with most of your viewers. Please paint the walls and such. It would definitely be easier to clean. This is coming from someone who had to clean a ckicken \ hen house for over 50 chickens. I wish we had thought to paint our hen house with the rubber paint. I also think that Rachel is right.
Nighttime is the best time to get the chickens they are pretty much blind after dark, a whole lot easier to catch for sure, be sure to coat the whole roost and back wall if you have the extra coating to do so. those chickens will get up way high so I agree with Rachel on the fact that they will get up there.
Safety glasses a must when skill sawing or drilling safety first Kevin. If you used 2x2’s then there would be no hard decision making. Cut in a chute door between studs for easy shoveling cleanup.
I love the chicken coop. The way you did the roost bars was very inventive. Could someone else be feeding Cora of a morning? I hope she decides to stay, if you can’t fix the fence xx
We watch a You tube channel of a couple in Alaska. They put their roost horizontal, flat so the chickens can sit on the 2x4 and cover their feet and that helps with frost bite. I Agree with Rachel
I'm so glad Kora is back!! Chicken coop looks great. Hope y'all have a blessed day. Kevin, I bet it's going to be strange once you put chickens up. You have been feeding them at the gate for so long. 😂
Hey Rachel, I'm not sure if anyone has said anything but GIRL, I want to know your secret! You look great!! Not that you didn't before lol but you look like you've lost weight and feeling great. I guess maybe age had something to do with it. Because you're a lot younger than I am. So if no one has said it, you do look great. I know all of us mom's and wives need a lil boost once in a while, people these days get so busy with their own lives and don't stop to compliment others. Kevin, no worries, you can take pride in having a beautiful wife😂 Y'all take care, God Bless Sending prayers that miss Cora stays home❤
I told Rachel she looked great awhile back, and since then, a bunch of others have said it. I bet she feels amazing, and her roster is better because chickens like to lay their breasts on the 2×4 😊
Rachel does look great, but I think the stress of what she went thru with the loss of her Daddy is probably how it started, I know firsthand stress can make you drop weight like crazy. Hopefully she just stays good and healthy.
My husband Chuck took your advice and got us a jackery… but he got the 3000. He really likes it and said to tell you he got it because you recommended it. I got him to watch your channel and a couple of others, but he likes yours best. I think it’s because he saw you using a backhoe and he use to run a big Case for quite a few years . He said to tell you thanks. ❤ hhhhmmmm I wonder if the chickens really care …. lol… you two are cute! Love y’all . Blessings from OKC.❤
You might want to put something up on the wall behind the roost to catch the poop running down the wall. Ralph at Grandpa Doss farm did this in his chicken coop. Just a thought. Glad she is doing good and is back in the yard with her family. ❤❤❤
Rachel is right! Chickens do not grab a roostbar like a parrot or any songbird, they like a big surfice to stand on then sit on their feet to keep them warm!
I love how the chicken coop is turning out. I would use the green on the inside too and yes on putting the rubber stuff on the bottom of legs of the roost. You have 4 awesome guard dogs. Just have to figure out why Cora wants to leave the property. Take care and stay strong. God bless
Kevin thank you so much for thinking about the 'elderly' chickens in your flock 😂😂. That is certainly one palatial coup...your chickens just don't know how very lucky they are!
Take Cora to the vet because she could be pregnant by now. I don’t want anything to happen to to that girl she is too sweet and precious. Love the chicken coop! You are so industrious and Rachel is looking great. Take care and God bless🙏❤️
I would like to compliment Rachel's skin. and her daughter. We call it cameo skin. No blemishes. My younger sister had skin like that It's beautiful. I can't wait tell the chicken coop is finished. It's really raking shape. Love you guys. I have been praying for rain for all our farmers. God hears our prayers. ❤❤❤
The chicken coup looks so nice. Rachel, great idea, painting the inside door and some of the boards with the same color green that is on the exterior. Kevin, I think that applying that special black paint on the roost stands is great. So glad that Cora is home. Mojo is very good at watching over all the animals, as Leeskee, Cora, and Russell are. ❤
Kevin, When using a 2x4 for a chicken roost, the 4" side should face up. Chickens prefer to sit flat-footed or close to it, so the roosting bar shouldn't be too thin. For added comfort, you can round the edges of the roosting bar with a router.
My chickens and quinine share the roost. Guinnies like the sharper edge while the chickens go for the flat as most will sitting down and cover their feet. Prevents rodents from chewing on toes and I read helps to prevent bumble foot . Love your house and your videos 😊😊😊❤
Yes use the floor stuff on the perches, easier to clean. And call me crazy, I painted fun bright colors in my coop, and stenciled the outside of the nesting boxes, was fun and looked great!! Have fun with coop, before its a poop coop,,lol So glad Miss Cora is back!!
Different types of perches and even some covered with carpet will lessen the chances of them getting bumble foot. You could start feeding the chickens inside the new pen also. Get them used to it and it may not be so hard to wrangle them if they are already in there. I noticed Rachel's weight loss when she did the video of losing her dad. It's a sad way to start losing weight IF that was the reason but she looks healthier and even more beautiful 💜. Not to mention her mini me daughter 💜. I also think you need to do more and be more proactive to keep Kora at the farm. Especially since you mentioned hunting season and hunters in the surrounding woods. Anything less is setting her up to be in harms way... IMO...
The best type of perches is small trees no bigger then your wrist. It gives your chickens different sizes and shapes to roost on and not get bumble foot. And don’t paint the roosts.
So happy Cora is staying home for now. Hopefully she won't run off anymore. The chicken coop is looking good. Good luck with the perches. Always enjoy seeing Mojo. GOD bless y'all.
Hey Y'all, My wife and I have learned that with every project the one the most passionate about the project should be in charge or if it is one of our wheelhouses then they are the leader and get to break the ties when we do not agree. Before going ahead though we warn the other right before we start just to be fair. It has worked well for 19.5 years now!! My question is has Rachel lost weight? Otherwise it is a bright day and she has bright colors on and just look extra nice today? Kevin always looks nice that never changes. God bless y'all take care
Rachel you are absolutely beautiful inside and out ❤. So happy that Miss Kora is home again, I pray she stays home. Love all your guys videos. Sending lots of love, hugs, and prayers to you all ❤
Good idea with the hinges. Wish I had done that. When I looked up building roosts. They said to use 2 x 2’s cause they could get their claws around it. But my new chicks like the wider area. They use the window ledge. Good compromise.
Hiya Kevin..your going to get a lot of rain .plus hail . severe storms coming..7 to 12 inches of rain..go to Ryan Hall y'all.. keeping an eye on tropical storm..make sure you put your vehicles up..stay safe
Sorry to burst your bubble Kevin. Rachel is right IMO. I have been breeding large standard chooks for over 50yrs and they need to have their feet flat when roosting.
Hello Kevin and Rachel I love the rubberized paint on the coop floor and the roosting bars that you can lift up to clean! Thanks for sharing great ideas! Blessings ❤ ~ Linda
Love your earrings, Rachel. I agree with Kevin that they hook their claws over the edges. At least in most ones I've seen. They like curling their toes on something. Not sure if theres a right or wrong way to do them. 😅😅
Hi Mo and Rachel! I think the chickens will like the flat boards under their feet better than the vertical that they have to grip constantly. New coop looks great. Glad Miss Cora’s staying home some. Take care, ❤❤❤❤
Kevin I don't know if you already have done this if not you need to write a book. You definitely don't need a ghost writer. I can see a couple already "Mojo and our ever growing sweet potatoes that keep populating all over our yard" another great "Ms Kora the only LGD on the farm Who goes MIA Over Night". ❤ Hey just a thought Kevin writing this Kevin why not put the camera that Mr Smeegles wore on Kora to see where she goes? Flat is best because they don't grip branches like other birds. Our chickens won't roost on them if they are narrow. Use a big fish net pole to catch the chickens. Less stress than chasing!

I have also heard some chickens prefer to allow their claws encircle the rounded roosts. Does it really matter? Just do what works for you and yours. I do agree to the rubberized flooring where the birds roost along the walls, that way couldn't you just power wash the poo out after removing any straw, or shavings? If I am able to get a coop and chickens, I will have to insulate it because of our winters. The coop is fandabulous! (fantastic, fabulous!)
With the kind of wood you used for the inside of the coop I’d paint it. The humidity from the chicken waste can puff the chip board and I had my roosts built the same way and they still managed to poop on the wall I was glad I painted it so it was easier to clean off
Quick google search would show that ……Chicken Roost Designs | Two Simple DIY Ladder Perch Ideas ...Chickens don't prefer to roost on flat boards because they like to curl their toes around the edge of the perch. They prefer perches that are round or square/rectangular.
Kevin, you should have done three horizontal and only two vertical. The bottom should have been horizontal. Easier for chickens to climb on, I think. I am curious which ones the chickens like most.
Hey Kevin and Rachel, I've found compromise is best, it takes the heat of your face😡🤭. The Coop looks fantabulous 🎉. We had a sick wind storm that dropped our Temps fro.65° to 43° ! It stinks that you giys are still broiling, it's been a hard weather year for ya'll 👻. JO JO IN VT 💞
back in the mid 60s we ha a dog that would leave for a week or so near use was a 10 acre swamp the water was maybe 4 ft some sunfish the grassy area was great for pheasant hunting the water area was great for ducks muskrat trapping then in 60 they drained it for crops
I love how you did your chicken coop. And how you plan to clean its that great.Ido believe they like to roost in a narrow board, like a branch.I have raised chicken a lot they like to grip when they sleep, but never gave them flat service to sleep on. When I had a barn, they would perch on narrow boards? Have a great week and get enjoyment from the rain, and hope it does not cause problems. Did you find out where Cora goes? Maybe she is guarding another animal? Since she is comming back?
One thing I would suggest is putting a coating on the wall behind the perch because when the poop it's going to suit and hit the wall. And don't put one in front of a window. Window cleaning is no fun but cleaning chicken poo off of them would be awful.😂
Chicken feet are not like wild bird or parrot feet, they can’t grip on things with their feet. Also, they like to sit on their feet while they sleep to keep them warm.
Paint the green on the inside Rachel, will look so finished then. Oh you have such patience, girlfriend! What needs to be done is to find the spot or places Cora is slipping out and fix them! You could have started the designer puppy rage.

We always used small trees with bark on them or larger limbs. They were rough and easy to stand on, not slick.
Hi Kevin and Rachel! Can you put the cam collar on Cora to see where she’s going? I’m kinda invested! Lol
Yes! So am i
I agree camera collar is a good idea 💡 ❤
Glad to see Kora still at home.
Mojo has the most important job there is! Gotta love 💕 him.
I agree with Rachel, I think the wider would be better so they can keep their feet warmer when they roost , but I’m not sure how cold it gets there. Anyway the experiment will be interesting.

Rachel is alway right. The sooner you figure that out the better.
🤣😹🤣😹🤣😹🥰
She’s wrong on the chicken roost!
What’s she say about Kora running around getting pregnant ?
The tiered roost makes it look like the seats in a sports stadium. I’m sure the chickens will appreciate it.
I'd be tempted to get them a flatscreen TV, but it wouldn't be good for them.
@@lindajohnson4204 Too many ads, too much violence, they would get frustrated and quit laying for sure! lol

Maybe cut an opening under roost to the outside to sweep poo out. A door that you can hook out of the way.

Hi Mo and Rachel! I think the chickens will like the flat boards under their feet better than the vertical that they have to grip constantly. New coop looks great. Glad Miss Cora’s staying home some. Take care, ❤❤❤❤
Kevin I would suggest you put that black stuff on the wall behind the roost
Thinking about what GrandoDoss did in their coop
Enjoy your videos
Your coop is really neat! Love the ingenious design !
I would paint the wall at the bottom. Just about 20 cm. So the chicken poo doesn't affect the walls, as it accumulates.
Rachel you have been working out, great job 👏
Kevin I don't know if you already have done this if not you need to write a book. You definitely don't need a ghost writer. Hey just a thought Kevin writing this Kevin why not put the camera that Mr Smeegles wore on Kora to see where she goes? Just a suggestion.
When you rig your hook and retainer for the roost, put one in the middle so one person can lift and hook it and then secure the two ends.
Great idea to paint the green Rachel.
Flat is best because they don't grip branches like other birds. Our chickens won't roost on them if they are narrow.
Use a big fish net pole to catch the chickens. Less stress than chasing!
Excellent idea!
Kevin,
Chickens do not grip. They like to have a flat surface. Check Google, and you'll see that the flat should be what they prefer and is better for them and their feet.
Well I have never found flat branches where my chickens prefer to roost.
According to Jason Over at cog hill farm chickens like to sit on the fat part of the two by four not the side sir rachel's correct
Rachel, you are beautiful as always. Love seeing you with Kevin. As an observer, regarding the roosts, I have watched so many homesteaders, and BOTH ways of doing the roosts by everyone. You have better weather than I do in Minnesota, and I have heard 1 of the ways was better for frigid temps, I just do not remember which is which. I have also heard some chickens prefer to allow their claws encircle the rounded roosts. Does it really matter? Just do what works for you and yours. I would string some netting across the open areas of the Poultry Palace to prevent hawks from having easy pickings.
With the kind of wood you used for the inside of the coop I’d paint it. The humidity from the chicken waste can puff the chip board and I had my roosts built the same way and they still managed to poop on the wall I was glad I painted it so it was easier to clean off

That was ur grandads metal skill circular saw,i have two of those.still cutting great!
Great advice on the compromising and trying both ways!! Its a very good lesson!
Chicken coop coming right along
Coating the base of your roost and the eye bolts to protect them would be a very good idea.
I mounted my roost bars in the corners above the nesting boxes. It has worked very well and they are out of the way for cleaning.
Hey Kevin and Rachel,
I've found compromise is best, it takes the heat of your face😡🤭.

If you get some baseboard, you can install it at a slant on those boards by the ceiling to keep them from trying to roost up there.

ps Rachel, You have lost weight and you look fabulous!
It will work both ways. You can also drape a poop catcher. I have seen 4-her's doing this. Easy clean out.
Great ideal on the roost to lift up for cleaning
Love it! Giving the chickens options!!
Its a beautiful coop by the way,💖💖🐓💖💖
One thing I would suggest is putting a coating on the wall behind the perch because when the poop it's going to suit and hit the wall. And don't put one in front of a window. Window cleaning is no fun but cleaning chicken poo off of them would be awful.😂
Wow 😮 Rachel lost a lot of weight! You look happier😊
The chicken house looks great!
Chicken feet are not like wild bird or parrot feet, they can’t grip on things with their feet. Also, they like to sit on their feet while they sleep to keep them warm.
Oh my goodness 😂 this had me chuckling.
❤ Love the videos
You might try a fishing net to put over the top to keep the chickens in and the predators out.
Rachel u looked really pretty today. Love ur hair that color. Keep up the good work😊😊❤😊😊
