Orr uttered one of the great understatements ever when he said that maybe he influenced a couple of young players. He influenced everybody. There will never be anybody remotely close to having the greatness of Bobby Orr.
I met Bobby Orr walking out of a restaurant in Boston yesterday.Talk about a First Class Gentleman! He greeted me like he already knew me and my family.GENUINE.I was blown away to meet this Legend in person.I grew up watching this marvel play the game.He changed the game of hockey He was a tough,Hard working, Classy, team Player who was a joy to watch.I can't think of any other human being that would blow me away by meeting like that of Bobby Orr.Hats Off.A True Gentleman !
I watched Bobby play in my home town of Bowmanville where I grew up and played for many years. when I was just 6 years old. That was when the Civic Auditorium which was the Oshawa Generals home rink, was being built in Oshawa where he is also enshrined as a junior. I watched him there also. He inspired me as a young guy. Gave me goose bumps actually when I watched him as a kid. He still holds the record for career plus/minus at +597 along with many other records. The big thing about Bobby( Gretztky also) is how humble they both are along with being great people.
Bobby got robbed of probably 6 more years because of all the knee surgeries. To me he's the greatest player ever. I grew up in Cambridge, Ma during the orr years and it was just amazing to watch him on WSBK 38. Every game you never knew what he would do!
100% Correct my friend. Bobby Orr carried the Bruins on his back (and his knees). He literally took control of every game and Esposito should be grateful to Bobby as he was the reason Espo scored so much. Gretzky was great and he made everybody on the ice better but he had amazing players all around him in Messier, Kurri, and Coffey. Orr had to do it mostly by himself. Plus Orr could do much more than Gretzky. In addition to scoring and passing, Orr could hit defend and fight.
Orr Revolutionized game mostly due to increasing its popularity. the owner of the p flyers saw people lining up to buy tickets for a team in last place in 1968 and decided to go for a nhl franchise.
One thing that doesn't seem to get a lot of attention regarding Sir Bobby is that he never cashed a cheque from the Blackhawks. He said he felt he never earned it. While he may have had more than the average Joe, he was by no means "set for life" the way these guys are now, with 7-figure signing bonuses. His cool, humble reaction to scoring a great goal is what every kid should be aware of. Best hilight is him sliding across his own net to block a shot, with hands low to maximize coverage.
Orr played every aspect of the game better than anyone else before or since.# 99 was a whiz when it came to offensive hockey, however, that just doesn't constitute the whole game.(& not enough to crown him as hockey's best player)Orr's +/- prove he played the 'whole game'He holds the single season +/-record as well as career +/- record.A +/-of 124 in one season may never be broken. For a career, histotal is twice as much as the next highest player.(Larry Robinson- another great defenceman)
Great video. I still think Bobby Orr is the greatest athlete ever, not just hockey player. Probably the nicest and most humble athlete/ celebrity ever.
Greatest hockey player ever. Period. Gretzky can't compare because all he could do was score. Orr was an amazing two way player. 99 didn't know shit about defense and never fought.
Lol!! Gretzky was a scoring machine but you say that he can't play defense or fight but he sucks? Watching the old bruins vs. Canadians games wow bobby orr sure sucked in those games.
great, nice, i think bobby Orr is the 2nd best player in the NHL. I think Wayne Gretsky is better but if Bobby were to be a forward he would be as good too.
Given the increased parity of play, between the game being better defensively and goalies getting much better, who compares to Orr nowadays in terms of defencemen? I say Duncan Keith is the best representation of how Orr would play in today's NHL, but I'm interested to get other people's thoughts on the matter.
There are those who'll think that by saying this, I am denigrating Wayne Gretzky, but I am not. For as great as Gretzky was, he didn't revolutionize the position of forward. Orr revolutionized the position of defenseman. Up till then, there weren't any puck carrying scoring defensemen. For that reason only do I put Orr ahead of the great one as GOAT!!
When you score that much no one cares whether you're a horrible two-way player, & he wasn't cause he sure killed lots of penalties and got lots of SHG's & assists. I can't see how anyone can argue that it's easier to be on the ice for a goal against even strength as opposed to killing a penalty. Unless you argue that the team with the man advantage tries too hard, gets out of synch and thus plays into the hands of offensively talented penalty killers. He did lead the NHL in +/- once or twice.
Most Exciting Player I Ever Seen In My 67 Years😢 In Any Sport.G.O.A.T.

BOBBY ORR epitomizes what a sports hero should be.

In my mind...the greatest athlete in the history of sports. What other athlete do you know of that was discovered at age 12?
the best...EVER
If it wasn't for knee injuries he would have had 2000 career points
Yeah, Bobby, you just might have encouraged some youngsters to play hockey.
This man is the epitome of modesty.

Sounds like Dana Hersey from The Movie Loft.

fighting has been a part of the sport since day 1 fool
That's because it is!!! haha

Mario was likely better than Wayne.

Eric Karlsson?
Is it true that bobby orr smoked cigarettes between his shifts?

Who revolutionized the position of forward?
Like to have seen Wayne have serious back problems as Mario and do better.
