Every time I feel lost, I listen to this song and come to conclusion that they wouldn't really know how I feel. It perfectly suits all the emotions that stirs me from within. Thank you for this classic. Why?
Oh Sedin, from BC too? I feel like Annie is such an underrated artist. These people just perhaps can't "relate" or just have the need to put a thumbs down
My niece used to sing this song all the time when she was 12 and living with me. I told her why are you singing such a sad adult song and she said she liked it. She was abducted and murdered from her home when she was 14 when she went back to live with her mother. I had them play this song at her funeral. We never found her body. Her name is Jessie Kay Peters. I mourn her very day. I loved her so much.
I’m in a laundromat that’s playing this song and I had to look it up to read the lyrics. I’m in tears because my Mom recently passed and we had argued the day she died. Then we made up and the day was going great. Then she had a heart attack right in front of me. We had a rocky relationship in my early years but the last three years we were finally getting along better than we ever had.
Crying right now. Because this song says so much about my life. From "I tell myself too many times why don't you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut"..to "Some things are better left unsaid but they still turn me inside out..". Annie's voice is one of the most passionate voices around..and NOBODY else could sing this song better..NOBODY. Love you Annie from the bottom of my heart..
One of my Best Friends is dying of brain cancer. She has mentioned several times that she wants to stop fighting. Tonight she was in the ER, and asked to "Go home." When seriously ill people say that, it sometimes means that they want to go not to a home in this realm, but to Eternal Life. Please pray for her, she is the sweetest most loyal and loving person. Her initials are AMS. 💔😪
When I listen to this song it reminds me of someone who is very sad about a relationship that is about to fall apart! Something that can't be saved anymore because somewhere along the line it is gone this boat is sinking this boat is sinking this boat is sinking! It's a sad song but it's a beautiful song because that's how a lot of relationships end! And the sad thing is you have to say WHY? How many times do I have to tell you how sorry I am for the things I've done? I will always love this song! ❤️
I think what is missing from a lot of mainstream music today is the lyrical angst and melodic tones that really speak to how heartbreaking and challenging it can sometimes be to walk this world as a human being. Life unfortunately isn't always happy nor is it kind. We have bouts of confusion, loneliness and outright despair. Sometimes a song can speak to those emotions which is why I go back to ballads from the 70's 80's and 90's. They truly don't make music like this anymore.....
Well set spot on if you don't make music like this anymore but it should be played on the radio today take off that rap music that don't make a damn bit of sense but Annie Lennox Eurythmics and this type of music does and the music from the 60s 70s and 80s and 90s make perfect sense thanks God bless
cause labels are GREEDY . allowing "the watered down sound" to be trending . they know it's garbage and don't care just to grab a fast buck ! youtube is our time machine for those who remember what Good Music Arrangements were !
I always thought that this was about her still born child, it fits so many situations, loss, disappointment, relationship break down. It crushes me everytime I hear it but it is hauntingly beautiful, music like this will always stand the test of time because it speaks to us all on a personal level. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to in ANY genre. I can't make it through the beginning without crying like crazy. What an incredible talent.
Annie Lennox is the boldest, smartest singer of my time. I first heard this song soon after getting "ghosted" by an amazing lady down South. "WHY" and the way Annie sculpts every syllable of it...helped me understand "soulmate" and that my circumstances were exactly as they had to be. Thanks to Annie Lennox and to that soulful woman with the knee-buckling smile who taught me how to pick North Carolina blueberries.
Elle Meek Because to not be able to acquire understanding for complex and/or painful emotions is one of the most painful experiences that a human can experience. So that is why it’s tragic.
“Why” is Annie Lennox's first single after the 1990 breakup of Eurytmics. She claims that it is a personal song related to her going solo. Though filled with doubt* about her very own artistic potential, Lennox penned “Why” within just ten-odd minutes. The piece won the 1992 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. When asked about “Why” in an interview, Lennox replied : “It’s basically about the point we humans inevitably come to when we realize that the knots and twists in relationships simply can’t be untangled, and we’re left dangling with a massive question mark with no apparent resolution. Why? Why? Why? Haven’t we all asked that question of ourselves and the universe?” Born on December 25, 1954, Ann Lennox has become one of the most popular British artists of all time. Including her achievements with Eurythmics, she has sold over 80 million albums throughout the world. Furthermore, the so very gifted contralto has earned six Brit Awards for Best Female Artist : A RECORD! As a public figure, Annie Lennox has adopted an array of looks, creating an eye-catching profile. In the early 1980s, she frequently wore men’s clothes and kept her hair short, generating question marks... “It was a kind of slightly subversive statement”, according to the artist. Interestingly, Miss Lennox was never into drugs, alcohol or whatnot connected with the milieu. On tour, she requests goods such as raw vegetables and tea. In 2010, the statuesque Scottish “diva” was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her work with charities fighting AIDS and poverty in Africa. She received the award from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in 2011. Let’s hope the lady doesn’t “learn to keep her big mouth shut” anytime soon. ❤️❓❤️ * Isn’t self-doubt typical of the finest ones?
Annie is my all time favourite female artist , hands down . This is a true classic from a truly classic female . Thankyou for this and thank you Annie for the voice behind the angel .
My beautiful, sweet and selfless ma took her life last Sunday 10/11/24. She could no longer battle the demons. My earliest memory is of us singing Annie Lennox on the doorstep. This back then made me cry at the age of 5/6. Now it’s even more poignant and bittersweet. Love you forever mum… Hope you’ve found your peace and can forgive what I could not give ❤
This song hits home with me. I was with my wife for 36 years and learned that l didn't know her at all. A true narcissist and a very good actress too. I feel like a complete idiot, she did everything wrong that you can imagine. My friends coworkers strangers and who knows what else. She's gone now but I'll never be right. It's far too much to comprehend after all of that time. I basically just exist. Go to work and go home. I do love my dog and my girlfriend but it's hard on her because l have trust issues...imagine that. ☮❤ people if you have a good one don't let them go.
I’ve never really known love, and anyone who I loved me abandoned me at some point. I’ve never known a truly kind word; anything that seemed ”nice” was really just a cake laced with poison and a knife in the back. I wonder if it’s my fault for being so kind, but I learned my lesson. I’ll never open myself up to a relationship of any kind that’s deeper than friendship again. The hurt is too deep.
We were married for 22 years. I suspected he was having an affair but he was a narcissist and kept telling me I was crazy. He was always putting me down. I finally had enough and left. I found out he played this song and cried. He never tried to get me back and a few weeks later he had his new supply. I will never love again. I often wonder if he will ever be sorry for hurting me the way he did.
@ Phillip Steven..... hang in there and try and be present with your gf. Do not let your ex pull you down. Use some distraction techniques to keep her out of your thoughts and give gratitude that you survived and for your gf. You can do it man :)))
Wonderful images of flowers, which bloom in this video to highlight the hope that love can flourish ... combined with the poignant words of this song: "This is the book I never read... These are the words I never said... This is the path i’ll never tread...These are the dreams i’ll dreams instead... This is the joy that’s seldom spread... these are the tears... The tears we shed” Thanks for posting.
I heard this song a few days ago. I've not heard it for some time. Now I can't seem to get it out of my mind. It has taken me back to a place I had forgotten. Thanks annie for sharing your music with us.
It's been several years since I heard "Why.". The power of those lyrics sung by Annie's voice. It is in a class of its own. God, how I love this song. Thank you, Ms. Lennox.
I lost my Dad the day after Christmas of 2019 to brain cancer I have such a hard time trying to over come the lost I lost the man that didnt have a good childhood to having anything he wanted because he worked so hard for 33 yrs in the county at the age 61 my dad was gone. I play this song when I feel down because this was my dad's favorite. When I play it I tell him this song is for you dad.
Today. I understood Annie Lennox’s song “Why”. Such such a brilliantly beautiful song. And extremely beautiful video. I can identify the meaning and sadness of the song. Beautifully written.
Gorgeous, haunting, beautiful. Perfect backing and harmonies all coming together. God, I wish I had the power to have sung this. Classic Nineties, why can't we have more of this instead of the crap nowadays?
Thanks for sharing
Thank you Annie Lennox for the magical soulful music you have produced over the years. I could drive to the ends of the earth and back just listening to soulful music like this.
MASTERPIECE....THRILLS AND EMOTIONS....LONELYNESS ....TRUTH ...LOVE ..PAIN....PIECE OF GOLD THIS SONG ..SUCH A MARVELLOUS ARTIST LENNOX..BRIGHT LADY ...
Yes, this beautiful song is about heartbreak but I also find it empowering. She's opening up and exposing her true emotions. There's something healthy about that.
I always pretend that I can belt this song out like Annie Lennox (even though I can’t carry a tune). This song says what I’m feeling sometimes and touches my soul when I hear it. “This boat is sinking” to “let’s cast away those doubts”. Let’s work on this. Why shut me up? Why not listen to me rant and rave and get it (& the tears) out?? Feelings, in this song, if allowed to be said, could save a marriage or bring peace to the self. This song will always be powerful and cathartic.
Some songs just really pull at your heart, and everytime it leaves me feeling vulnerable because because I'm right there,in the midst of human turbulance
one of my favorite tunes....always makes me wanna travel to Europe for some reason...never fails. I guess I need to make time to do that now that COVID has calmed down somewhat. Annie is a legend...in her own time.
I WENT TO SEE HER AT CENTRAL PARK IN '95 SHE SANG THIS SAD BUT BEAUTIFUL SONG I ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH BRINGS BACK LOTS OF GREAT MEMORIES SHE'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE FEMALE SINGER ANNIE LENNOX!!! 😎👍❤
Omg I'm reading all y'alls comments and I love that you guys are open I literally just found out my boyfriend was cheating on me 😞 shit bro this song says it all
So sorry to hear that, but your boyfriend is the fool not you, and it's his loss he doesn't deserve a beautiful honest girl like you xxx 'cheaters are losers anyhow xxx
Very aware and beautiful song, and the flowers are a great addition to the video. I remember this song from high school. I love this and "No More I love You's" to this day. Annie Lennox is such a great artist and feels the world from a tough place. Really brings me back the 90s and my youth, and at that time I just liked how things sounded and was very confused and jaded. But now I see the beauty of her words.
The flowers are more than a great addition, I think. It's a bloom in desperate times, or desperation, offers beauty, light and promise. Which is why she asks why when it's abloom for him
I love how you incorporated all the blooming flowers in this video to accent this wonderful song. I'm sure Annie and also my self appreciates it. Thanks
Annie steps outside herself and sheds her feelings across the divide. It's music you can make your won words fit the intensity of emotion. This is real human stuff and human experience in desperate hope.
This song is a slice of heaven, listening to this song makes me sad and makes you think how someone who you loved and trusted so much can change in the blink of an eye and how your world can be tipped upside down and you loose everything. Wish we could turn back the clocks but we cannot all we can do is move forward and hope good things can happen on the way.
Thank you for making this track. It is amazing so powerful and moving and the transformation of the flower to this beautiful song is priceless ❤❤❤ Incredible 🙏💟☮️
First time i heard this song..I was traveling to a power lifting meet. This song stuck to me....It really elevates something inside me i just can't explain. But it feels smooth.
It wouldn't exactly destroy this if I knew what it was about exactly. It's the seeming amorphous and changing nature of the lyrics with that music which trips me into trance , a trance of beauty and , yes, my God , a higher conciousness ,accepting all that is , in the present and beyond this place, where I'm staying all the time, it shows how close we really are to what is divine, ourselves held in amazements. I don't know how much more I could say.
I woke up to this song on a beautiful spring morning in 1992 when I was about to graduate college. When I heard this song, I realized that a spectacular woman I had fallen in love with two years earlier but who considered me only as a friend wasn't going to be either going forward. It was time to move on.
i used to sing this in Portland, Oregon at karaoke. It brings back good memories. Ty YT and Annie Lennox. Im panicking right now. i need music to help me stop
Every time I feel lost, I listen to this song and come to conclusion that they wouldn't really know how I feel. It perfectly suits all the emotions that stirs me from within. Thank you for this classic. Why?
Anaid O. Yvw :)
I love that there's other people out there, that run to this song, when we're feeling lost. I hope everything is going better for you:)
Here's what I don't get, how could 61 people dislike this?
Oh Sedin, from BC too? I feel like Annie is such an underrated artist. These people just perhaps can't "relate" or just have the need to put a thumbs down
Anaid O. I am from BC. I agree with you and I think those people need to listen to more Annie Lennox, then they would get it

Charylene Mccain I’m so sorry. That is such a tragedy.
My heart aches for you...may Jessie rest in peace...
Hay I'm comment you on how it's going and did you find her
And are you doing well
I sent this to my estranged son. I hope
He listened. 😢
Today would have been my 18th wedding anniversary. I woke up with this in my head. It kind of says it all.
It is a very thoughtful experience to listen to this song. I was married for 35 yrs. I feel your pain.
I’m in a laundromat that’s playing this song and I had to look it up to read the lyrics. I’m in tears because my Mom recently passed and we had argued the day she died. Yep. My 26 year relationship is ending as I write this. So many regrets.....😥

That's exactly where we go when we leave this world, we simply go home and we catch up with those who went before us.
God bless her. Forever by our Lord's side. DEUS VULT.
I died in 2020 and came back.
There is more.
Probably the saddest, most emotional and yet tragically beautiful songs ever written. Absolutely brilliant!
Ja....so true
It happened to me...

Beautiful. I learned that she wrote it when she was 38, separating from her partner. ❤️
Can’t listen to this without memories falling out of my eyes ….
This is one of those songs that never get old and fit every taste and every mood.
A masterpiece ❤️
If this song doesn’t stir up the sorrow in your soul then I don’t know what does. ❤
I used to love this as a teenager.
After years had went by and the heart has known turmoils, it gets a completely different meaning now.
Me too...
I hope you had a good decade
I always thought that this was about her still born child, it fits so many situations, loss, disappointment, relationship break down.
It crushes me everytime I hear it but it is hauntingly beautiful, music like this will always stand the test of time because it speaks to us all on a personal level.
The album was a masterpiece, not a lot else I can say really.
I love this song. My daughter hasn't spoken to me in several years.
I wasn't the best mom, but who is.
🥺
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to in ANY genre. I can't make it through the beginning without crying like crazy. What an incredible talent.
Ditto. I can't imagine anyone else doing this song justice. It was made for her.
I'm right along with you mate.
Back when ballads were felt with raw emotion, thankx
Annie Lennox is the boldest, smartest singer of my time. I first heard this song soon after getting "ghosted" by an amazing lady down South. "WHY" and the way Annie sculpts every syllable of it...helped me understand "soulmate" and that my circumstances were exactly as they had to be. Thanks to Annie Lennox and to that soulful woman with the knee-buckling smile who taught me how to pick North Carolina blueberries.
2021 and I'm still crying to this song.
This came out at the same time my father passed away and I can't help but cry when I hear it.
"I don't think you know how I feel"...Tragic, but real in any relationship...
YES.
#MagusForeva ! I’m not that great at reading minds. Why TRAGIC? believe me. I know the meaning of the word.

Frank Fitch For some reason I just thought of it and looked it up. Probably 10 years since I heard it. Amazing.
It's been several years since I heard "Why.". The power of those lyrics sung by Annie's voice. It is in a class of its own. God, how I love this song. Thank you, Ms. Lennox.
This song was always mine. From the age of 15. This song...Annie is my soul's musician. ♡
I often listen to this when the sun is going down and the fog starts rolling in. Absolutely beautiful combination.
I should try that

Beautiful video.. Thank you for sharing !
Beautiful song. Kinda makes me sad though. Annie Lennox is superb!
The most painful breakup song ever written in my opinion
This song makes me feel such strong emotion. My relationship summed up..this song has so many meanings to different people.
For my mum who died recently never accepted me or her 2 grandchildren! Planning to play this down my local beach and say goodbye .
I understand. 🎈
One of the most under rated songs ever. Can't help of thinking of the ones we have lost in life when listening to this song.

Yes. Somethings are better left unsaid but they still turn you inside out.
Great song I remember it from back in the day
Yes they are....
The world's anthem at the moment
Yes, this beautiful song is about heartbreak but I also find it empowering. She's opening up and exposing her true emotions. There's something healthy about that.
Absolutely...great point.

"... that's why it hurts so bad to hear the words that keep falling from your mouth ..."
Which is why she asks why when it's abloom for him
So beautifully represented Kevin!!!!!!!! Sadness & Beauty. Annie is AMAZING!!!
I love how you incorporated all the blooming flowers in this video to accent this wonderful song. I'm sure Annie and also my self appreciates it. Thanks
This song always makes me feel some type of way.
What a beautiful and thought inducing song by the queen of music
I think about love I’ve had and lost and yes I cry, I cry so hard
The five stages of grief is represented in distinctively in this song: Denial,Anger,Bargaining,Depression and Acceptance
Annie steps outside herself and sheds her feelings across the divide. It's music you can make your won words fit the intensity of emotion. This is real human stuff and human experience in desperate hope.
❤️🙌🏾 I absolutely love this song!❤️
This song is a slice of heaven, listening to this song makes me sad and makes you think how someone who you loved and trusted so much can change in the blink of an eye and how your world can be tipped upside down and you loose everything. Wish we could turn back the clocks but we cannot all we can do is move forward and hope good things can happen on the way.
Très belle chanson... J'adore ! Merci
Beautiful song and amazing edition!
Pure talent , pure bliss xxx

First time i heard this song..I was traveling to a power lifting meet. This song stuck to me....It really elevates something inside me i just can't explain. But it feels smooth.
my mama dedicated this song to me when I was a kid...I love u mama..via con dios!
One of my all-time favorite songs! Annie, I love you. CEASEFIRE NOW!
I don't know how much more I could say.
love the passion and dread
This song says what I’m feeling sometimes and touches my soul.
this is an everlasting treasure fo me' we love you Annie' God bless you.......
Absolutely beautiful... I was able to appreciate the song more here.. thanks for sharing such a beautiful video. :)
I woke up to this song on a beautiful spring morning in 1992 when I was about to graduate college. When I heard this song, I realized that a spectacular woman I had fallen in love with two years earlier but who considered me only as a friend wasn't going to be either going forward. It was time to move on.
Visually appealing and thoughtfully produced video - it's stood the test of time 👌🏽
Merveilleuses émotions !
