      Star Trek had the same thing going by giving all (most) ships clear and distinct warp nacelles, and Im glad another show picked up on that for a change, because Star Trek ship design in the new shows has seriously suffered. Especially the mess with the Klingon ships early in Discovery was just awful. Its the perfect example of how NOT to follow an established design language.

    • @sam23696
      @sam23696 Год назад

      Yeah design language is hugely important if you are going to have a space show where the ships are a significant role beyond a set piece. You can see it in pretty much any decent space show, even the Expanse, despite some people saying the ships from the Expanse are uninteresting. You know just by looking at a ship in the expanse how it is arranged internally, and that is because of consist design choices.

    The Orville season 3 refit is definitely the best ship.
    On the physical model, I'd thought that was just used for the pilot, then was retired, the pilot episode version has different details on the rings at the back, easily explained considering the damage had taken in that episode, when repairing the rings they updated the design, so I'd assumed when it was mentioned they had made the physical model but quickly switched to CGI that was why the back of the rings looked different.

    I do love the Orville and season 3 was amazing. Only issue is that I wish they'd change up the space battles a little. In every episode when the union is going head to head with an opponent, the Union is on the losing side. Every time. The only thing that saves them is some random lucky hail Mary pass just before all hope is lost.
    It would be nice if just once, they emerged from a fight going, "hey, seems our ships, tech and tactics were enough to win the day."

    I love this show and the Union ship aesthetic is by far the best. I really hope this show gets renewed. It is one of the few good sci-fi shows around and it nicely fills the hole left by the death of once great franchises like Star Trek and Dr Who.

    I really miss The Orville and the more time that passes since season three the more I'm afraid that there isn't going to be any new episodes. In my opinion it's one of the best science fiction shows since Firefly or Farscape and there were many storylines still to be pursued. I read recently that Adrianne Palicki indicated that she wasn't interested in returning and while her character was huge there are many other great characters and they could easily continue on without her. We can only wait....

    The Navarian ships are angular space whales. They look nice because their design touches on a known shape of something that we feel should be floating there, without being too obvious. IMO possibly the best design.

    Never watched the show...but was there ever a ship called the Reddenbacher? It would be so great as long as they didn't wink at the camera while doing it, but just have it naturally come up in dialogue. Maybe it's going to explode and they say "That thing's gonna POP at any moment!"

    It took me awhile to get used to the look of the ships since it intentionally has a Star Trek TNG feel to it in tone. Byt now I love it. I also like that the Irville isn't the biggest baddest ship in the fleet or anything like that. I'm assuming it's supposed to about the size of the TOS Enterprise since i think it has a crew of around 300. At the same time there are ships that look like the Orville but much larger. This show I pray gets a 4th season.

    Off-topic just a bit, but the Miranda's are such a cool design. Next to the Constitution class Enty's, the Reliant is easily my favorite ship in Star Fleet. If I was going to serve on a Star Fleet ship, I'd want it to be a Miranda. That a Miranda or one of its descendents has never been considered as a hero ship is a sin.
