  • Today’s book is an almost anthropological examination of the nature of corporate scandal:
    Why do values go awry?
What happens when the wrong person gets a big job?
Why is it so tempting to post false profits instead of telling the truth?
How distorting is the prospect of stock market riches?
In retrospect, Enron did not conceal their dubious transactions from the investing public, but Enron’s brass didn’t go out of their way to point them out.
    But ....
For anyone willing to wade through the company’s financial documents, the numbers were clear.
We are joined today by a brilliant journalist who did that work, who asked the questions others did not and whose work would expose one of the biggest scams of all time.
    We welcome the author of
“The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron” with Bethany McLean, welcome to the show.

No matter how young Fastow was, he was a crook.
They waived the code of ethics/conduct in order for him to do these functions, that is what made it ‘legal’ - it wasn’t legal without these waivers.

Through life's myriad paths she walks, grace in every step,
Her presence, a gentle breeze, where warmth and kindness met.
Bethany, with a smile that lights the darkest days, and eyes that deeply see,
Brings a touch of wonder, her spirit bold and free.
Her laughter, a melody, that sings of joy and light,
Echoes through the corridors of days turned bright.
In Bethany's embrace, a haven found, a heart that understands,
A soul that dances freely, in life's ever-shifting sands.
She moves with quiet confidence, strength clear and true,
A beacon in the complexity of all we pursue.
Each word from Bethany, a note of hope, in life's grand symphony,
A testament to the love and light she shares so generously.
In her, a world of beauty, a journey of the heart unfolds,
With every step together, a perfect work of art she molds.
More than just a name, she's a dream vividly seen,
In every moment shared, Bethany is everything serene.

As long as capitalist adventuring incentivises greed scams will follow one after another: contemporaneously with Enrod was Bernard Madoff, on the heels of which was Theranos. Politicians, beholden to corporate donors, will plead "we can't do much about the greed mania", and so will pretend to make reforms but which will keep their racketeering world spinning.

These scams relied on taking advantage of regulatory loopholes, lack of diligent regulatory oversight, and exploitation of investor confidence. As such they weren’t really rackets.
Capitalist adventuring leads to technical innovation, disruption and progress. A few bad apples in a free market economy is the price we pay.

You can thank Milton Friedman. I sat in on his graduate seminars at the University of Chicago over 40 years ago. Chicago school economic thinking was, of course, drilled into us MBA students at the business school.

Didn't they know they would eventually get caught? Stupidest guy in the room.😅 As a contractor I made bank from them, with no repercussions
