@@SomedaySam I agree....I am so sad that he is no longer with us. His guitar work was incredible. His solo on "Something About You" is one of my favorite guitar solos of all-time.
The fact that two talented musician brothers, stayed in the same band. had some real cement. Four corners of the compass, all talent and insight, brought the ramp of appreciation and success to the band. As a massive fan during the World Machine days, the departure of the brothers was a big message, solidified by the volition of both. Only recently did I know of the issues with Boon. The last thing I ever want is animosity within the band. It seems the new definition of "the last thing" I want in any band I respect and appreciate, is bad health. I'm a Rush fan from Toronto, with family members having served the band itself. Rumours of slowly attacking issues are one thing, but severe diseases are another. Mental health issues are another level itself. Those issues coupled with substance abuse are nasty. The music industry unfortunately has its fair share of that last coupling. Pink Floyd's founding member, and that story, is epic and sad, almost a theme in the very band's presentation over many albums. It's my experience from L42's music and progression, that their music was a wonderful positive outlook and story about UK and Europe. Let this be a lesson to myself, and perhaps others, that positivity and enlightenment comes from those that might themselves, be suffering.
Wow, what year was this? What great lads to play such humble audiences - kids' discos no less. I assume it has to be before they hit the big time, supported Madonna in the US, etc, lol! Bless them, they were always so genuine, and fame didn't spoil them. So tragic about Boon, no amount of success can cure that kind of depression alas. A terrible loss all round.
Hey Julian. Another great look at L42. The old stuff is so fun to see. It reminds me of much younger days. These adorable, somewhat awkward, down to earth boys make me smile in every decade. Thanks again.
I love this, it's so natural, and so totally unpretentious. I've been to so many holiday camps on the IOW, but I never had the pleasure of the cheesy Tie a Yellow Ribbon experience though sadly! The Chinese Way - 💖
Julian, This is...amazing L42 playing a Holiday camp. I must have slept through 80's videotape Era. First time watching this footage.... My next vinyl quest: Tie A Yellow Ribbon/The Chinese Way [white label promo mix] LOL, only kidding but that's a pretty unique segue of two very different songs! Thank you Julian for sharing some amazing material, amazing and fun stories, and Level 42 in concert for us, including Mike and Phil @ 606 Club Live too! Merry Christmas cheer to everyone! Paul
Thanks again Julian! Look forward to everything you share. I can only imagine when Mark and Mike see these kind of vids they can hardly believe all those years behind them now. What a fabulous lasting career they've had!! The most special thing tho is their music will stand the test of time. You have been blessed to have been there so closely Julian. Because of you the rest of us can still enjoy them and their music from afar!
Phil commented on this a few months ago too !! (theres another version out there somewhere i think) he said growing up on an island even when you are poor is very cool but like all things you eventually want something new!! :D They all worked their 'tails off' to get off that island ... but it paid off for them :)) .
Corrine Graves Hi there! Thx for the extra insight. Learning about their early years is really interesting and how the band evolved through the years. Keeping their ties to where it all began served them well. Thx again
They do yes ... he shared that on his fb page and it was made public as most of his posts are on there :) . He and Mike still love to record at an IOW studio up to this day .. Phil is never idle he continues to write and play to this day.
Corrine Graves Happy to hear Phil is still writing and playing. Plz excuse my not knowing what the fb site you referred to. Sounds like you might have enjoyed them for a long time and you keep up with them in some way!! Appreciate you sharing any fun stories. It's beautiful where they're from! I've seen Mark s vid on his gardening etc . Have you ever got to travel there?
This is so beatiful to watch! So very young and yet so talented! Musicians of today need to learn a lot from these guys! So funny to see them playing Hawaii Five-O theme 😁
We need to crowdsource a 90 minute retrospective documentary to pay tribute and provide a historical record of this incredible band and their contributors, producers etc. Time is short.
Thank you Julian, for sharing this boggling footage! Tie a yellow ribbon indeed. Lovely bit of editing through time on Chinese Way. I was all set to attend all 3 Australian concerts this year, but... Still, re-booked for 2 of the 3 already!! I am enjoying your feeds in headphone iso splendour, so thanks for your great clips. xxx fellow super-fan.

My introduction to Level 42 and Mark King was through this TV programme. To paraphrase John Lennon when he saw Elvis on screen for the 1st time... "That looks like a good job [ MK on Bass ]" :O)
What year is this? I'm guessing 1983. Because they still look pretty young but Mike has got rid of the moustache he had until the end of 1982. Interesting thing is that Channel 4 or ITV drama about the young British guy and his Swedish girlfriend called "Annika" was probably being filmed on the Isle of Wight in the summer of 1983, probably around the same time as this documentary. (I know it says 1982 but I don't think that's correct). ruclips.net/video/TwccBHPbYFY/видео.html
Terrific stuff, thanks Julian. Apologies if you've answered this elsewhere but do you know where 'The Chinese Way' was filmed? Looks like maybe Hammersmith Odeon but not sure...

Is it me or did Mark seem to struggle with the vocals on the Chinese Way? Maybe due to voice wear or not feeling too well on the day?
