- The University of Johannesburg (UJ) yesterday held a dialogue in collaboration with Democracy Works under the title - The Future of South Africa We Want.
The thrust of the discussion was about honest reflections on SA, where the country comes from, what gains were made, and what needs to change.
Among the speakers was Rivonia Circle director, Tessa Dooms. She holds the view that South Africa gave power entirely to politicians and overwhelming power to the government.
And that people who have power are those with access to politicians, while disempowering the rest of the society, leaving people disengaged and demobilised. For more on this we are joined virtually by Tessa Doom, she is an author and one of the directors at the Rivonia Circle.

South Africa is preparing for a National Dialogue...something which has been suggested by the former Head of State, Thabo Mbeki...where all South Africans will be represented. We haven't been talking as South Africans, and this will give us the opportunity to bring our grievances to the table and suggest a way forward as we build our nation and country. It's long overdue!!!

I support the idea that the power of politicians needs to be reigned in. It is therefore not rocket science to change to a constituent assembly, when politicians will be directly responsible to the people that basically employ them directly.

We were there! Then gov abused the NGO sector by underfunding them to do statutory service and did not develop gov provision of services Super Sad
What is sad is that parents approve burning down of infrastructure which taxpayers paid for. To them the youths express their dissatisfaction of the way politicians run the country.
That money is gone never to be recovered again.

SA handed power to politicians with little acumen or experience in running a country. On top of that, these politicians are extremely slow learners - 30 yrs on how to up their performance was not nearly enough
