My father was murdered in front of me at 17, with no other options I ended up homeless for a 6 month stretch. I found a shelter near the Detroit area that would take me in but I had to sleep at a table for the first 4 weeks as they had no open beds. I found 2 jobs in the area, became a member of the Roofers Union and found a passion in dj’ing nights. That was 15 years ago(wow) and I now have a home, 2 vehicles, a dog & happiness. Life hits all of us with different struggles, some of us are hit a lot harder than others. It’s all about how you recover from those hits you take that lands you wherever you end up. I thank god every day that I found the drive and strength to work my way out of that situation.

Plenty of children are homeless and have to take care of their siblings and have bombs thrown at their houses and things like that. Instead of feeling heartbroken, you ought to keep resisting and protesting the wrongdoings of your country's regime until they start to actually take care of the population.

None of the teens depicted in this documentary ever gave up. They faced what seemed like the most hopeless moments, and they kept trying to achieve their goals. They didn't forgo their dreams just to survive. They managed to do both things. That's a strength that I, a 40 y/o woman, find inspiring in my own life. The programs that keep these young people from sleeping on the streets and that keep them moving forward with their educations are so important.

I just graduated from medical school debt-free (because I worked several jobs to pay my way through). I felt defeated when studying for my board exams today, but watching this and seeing how resilient these amazing young men and women are has helped me realize that I have to continue working as hard as I possibly can so I can give the same opportunities I was giving to someone else. Especially abandoned children and youth. I will succeed!

I became homeless when I was 16. I slept under a bridge right through the Scottish winter. I would put on every item of clothing I had in my bag and would still wake up freezing. I quickly learned insulation under the body is key but I didn't actually feel homeless until i was sleeping on cardboard. The crushing loneliness and junkies trying to take advantage was actually harder to contend with. In the UK early morning milk deliveries are left on the doorstep so i would get out and steal bottles of milk (sorry god). Eventually I was placed in an adult shelter where I was subjected to drugs and abuse from the older occupants. I've had to build my life up since then. I'm 33 and only feel like I'm just starting to catch up. I have a beautiful wife and my son is 10. I'll never let him experience what I did in life. I still thank God every night that I sleep in a bed. The one thing I learned is to never entirely rely on anyone or anything but yourself. Never ever give up on life. Keep your head strong, it's OK to become hardened. Let it happen.

You're amazing and i can only imagine the happiness of each person you drank milk from would feel now to hear you doing so well. All my love Charlie, you deserve the world!

Because if they paid for everyone that had no money, they wouldn't have any, either. Why is the first thing you people always say is that nonsense? You immediately pawn the responsibility of helping these people off on someone else? Well, those "someone else's" think it's someone else's responsibility, too! So, you know why nothing ever gets done, and these people never get any help? It's because of people that think like you! You immediately act like there's nothing you can do, then pawn it off on someone else - so, nobody does anything!

You changed this young man's life in such an immeasurably infinite way, you took him from a dark desolate place that could have led to tragedy and set him forth on a path where he learns he can overcome obstacles and achieve success in the face of adversity. You showed him in a world full of unfairness that yes, indeed there IS good. You are a light in a sea of darkness, you are a shining example of what it is to be a truly good person!!! You show what just ONE person can do to make a difference. And you have inspired me to help others!! THANK YOU 🙏

I can empathize with these children, my mother suffered from (undiagnosed) NPD, she was hyper-religious and used that as a cover to abuse me, and take out her frustration, along with my step-dad. Many of cold nights on Chicago's West-side I walked to a friends house, or my back porch. I am 50, that part of my journey I am still healing from. I am so glad that these young people have resources that were not available in the 80s. For all of the parents who fail to educate themselves in parenting style just know you are apart of the problem. There are no children alike, they are multifaceted individuals that require patience, as well as guidance. Because some of you lack the appropriate skills to care for them you become frustrated, lashing out at them when you should be their support. Parenting is not abuse at either extreme meaning you can't beat them into who you want them to be, nor can you be desponded and wonder why they failed? Both actions are abuse. If you are not emotionally equipped to rear children, well give them an opportunity, don't be selfish. If you fail, you know it, as well as we do. To this day when I call my mother out on her inappropriate abusive behavior, she retreats because she knows it was wrong, her being exposed is an embarrassment for her. She never thought I would grow up enough to ask her why she treated me the way she did, tell her how wrong she was. The only admissions she said is "parents make mistakes". Then in the same breath deny anything happened, on to I said I was sorry? Go figure!

Most of us teachers have something inherent in us wanting to reach children. Those of us who are still here, making it past the political hate and division coming for us and within our ranks, truly are just here to reach every child that will let us in. We don't care about masks, we know we need these kids in front of us in person everyday, and we know these kids aren't putting us at risk of being ill. If we AREN'T there fighting for them, we are putting THEM at risk of not getting the fighting chance they deserve to get through this life.
