    I've always really enjoyed Galaxy 4. Derek Martinus may have been inexperienced but I think from what remains it was a confident and stylish debut. In regard to the animation, I don't understand how they had resources to animate the Mission to the Unknown teaser, and yet scenes were cut from Macra Terror.

    It seems like Hartnell actually gave a really good performance in this one. I mean, he always did (until he literally couldn’t), but it really does emphasize how much of a shame it is that these stories, in their entirety, are lost . . .

  • @davidbanan.
    @davidbanan. Год назад +9

    Something which really erked me, and for no real good reason to boot (heh), about the animation is that they gave the Drahvins high heeled boots, when the original costumes just had plain (and more logical) boots, like high heels exist purely for vanity it makes no sense for a race like the Drahvins to have shoes like that. There absolutely no reason for this to annoy me so much.

    I hadn't experienced this story until the animation came out and I honestly really loved it, it's a nice slice of science fiction morality and the show's first female villain is a really interesting, layered antagonist.

    I really liked Galaxy 4. Seems like an underrated episode. I would definitely include this one in a curation of best episodes. William Hartnell's performance was at an all time level of crotchety, but also very likeable at the same time. He really nailed it in this one. Also loved the character chemistry between him, Vicki and Steven. These three really work well together as a team.
    Steven did a good job lone wolfing it most of the way. Just like The Doctor said, "That won't be necessary, my dear. He's quite capable enough of looking after himself. Now, the cable, please, the cable." described him well. I've never see Steven before, but I have to say I liked him as a part of their trio. He sort of made me think of a young version of The Doctor in the sense that he is carefully observant and deep, critical thinking. A rather nice addition, and I think it opened it up for Hartnell to have more dialog without it feeling like Steven is merely a support character. That is, Steven has a nice feeling of autonomy about him without having to be too wordy. Rather a sigma type personality. Would love to see more episodes with the three of them. A nice dynamic between the three characters that flows nicely.

    I don't agree that The Doctor tried to kill the Rills because of their looks. The reason he was sabotaging their ammonia extraction machine was to rescue Vicki from their capture. I think it was to gain an upper hand, where either the rills were killed or incapacitated, or they'd have to open up their ship to come out and repair the unit. He figured they were hostile once they trapped Vicki, which is a reasonable assessment from such actions. It wasn't until they explained their actions to Vicki, we realized they had no hostile intentions, but actually wanted to help. One thing that has been consistent with the Doctor all throughout the entire series, is that he only kills or destroys in self-defense. He also often is the one to try to deescalate hostilities, or try to work out a peaceful resolution first.

    In nineteen sixty five many people in Britain knew all about how evil attractive young women could be from the news reels of the female guards at places like Belson and other death camps. WW2 was very much in people's memories and that is reflected in many dramas of the time including Doctor Who. Many villains tended to have Nazi traits. I don't recall any of my mates back then being particularly over concerned with the moral or political aspects of shows like Doctor Who, it was more about the Doctor and is companions battling the bad guys be they cavemen or cybermen, but we were only ten at the time of this series. You make a good point about the show killing the impact of the twist early on taking the edge of this story which was a shame. You mentioned Doctor Who considering stranding Vickie on the doomed planet, this was not the first time he had a dark moment, I seem to recall that in the first series he was going to kill an injured caveman with a rock but was stopped by Ian Chesterton. Something else to consider, only a small thing I know, but the quality of many of the teles back in the day wasn't exactly that great, they were black and white and worked with a scanning frequency of 405 lines, the definition wasn't the best and the sound could be a bit iffy. Screens could be a bit on the small side too so some of the questionable production values in these early programmes weren't that noticeable at the time.
