I've always really enjoyed Galaxy 4. Derek Martinus may have been inexperienced but I think from what remains it was a confident and stylish debut. In regard to the animation, I don't understand how they had resources to animate the Mission to the Unknown teaser, and yet scenes were cut from Macra Terror.
It seems like Hartnell actually gave a really good performance in this one. I mean, he always did (until he literally couldn’t), but it really does emphasize how much of a shame it is that these stories, in their entirety, are lost . . .
Something which really erked me, and for no real good reason to boot (heh), about the animation is that they gave the Drahvins high heeled boots, when the original costumes just had plain (and more logical) boots, like high heels exist purely for vanity it makes no sense for a race like the Drahvins to have shoes like that. There absolutely no reason for this to annoy me so much.
I hadn't experienced this story until the animation came out and I honestly really loved it, it's a nice slice of science fiction morality and the show's first female villain is a really interesting, layered antagonist.
Considering his views on identity politics, he’d probably fit in that time period. If I’d ever meet him and had the power, I’d paraphrase what Ryan said to Krasko, “You like the past so much, why don’t you just live it.” and the just teleports him to 1950’s Southern America to which he will never return. Let’s be real, he’d fit right at home if you get what I’m saying.
This episode contains the earliest moments of the series that I can remember from the time - I guess that makes me old enough to be your gandfather! I enjoyed the episode but Maaga's writing table appears to have come from a garden centre, Another great review BTW
I really liked Galaxy 4. Seems like an underrated episode. I would definitely include this one in a curation of best episodes. William Hartnell's performance was at an all time level of crotchety, but also very likeable at the same time. He really nailed it in this one. Also loved the character chemistry between him, Vicki and Steven. These three really work well together as a team. Steven did a good job lone wolfing it most of the way. Just like The Doctor said, "That won't be necessary, my dear. He's quite capable enough of looking after himself. Now, the cable, please, the cable." described him well. I've never see Steven before, but I have to say I liked him as a part of their trio. He sort of made me think of a young version of The Doctor in the sense that he is carefully observant and deep, critical thinking. A rather nice addition, and I think it opened it up for Hartnell to have more dialog without it feeling like Steven is merely a support character. That is, Steven has a nice feeling of autonomy about him without having to be too wordy. Rather a sigma type personality. Would love to see more episodes with the three of them. A nice dynamic between the three characters that flows nicely.
I can’t even fathom how reactionaries would react to the Portrayal of feminism in Galaxy 4. Nerdrotic and Critical Drinker in particular would have a cry in the corner.😂
Quartering is my particular bugbear. The man actually tried to claim that the original Candyman isn't 'woke', and that the most recent Candyman film is bad because it is. I can't think of a better example of a woke horror film than Candyman prior to Jordan Peel coming along.
I remember seeing this as a kid. Mr Tardis is right - it was pretty pants. What I do remember is how striking the four identical mini skirted armed Bet Lynches were- this was like something from the golden age of science fiction or the more adult sci fi programme on BBC2 very late at night: Out of the Unknown. Good to see Mr Tardis reviewing stories from ‘My Doctor’ as I find nothing in the current era excites me. One thing I remember at the time as very neat was the device of having speakers in the robots to broadcast the telepathy voices of their masters
Besides some inconsistent characterisation I really quite enjoyed this serial (7/10 ish), it's much more enjoyable than most of season 3 which I have found to be so all over the place. I really quite liked the animation it really suits the rather simple story. The show seems to loose direction and focus once Ian and Barbara leave. Nice review, I can't wait until we get to the gunfighters.
What is the craziest part to me about this story is it seems like all the main actors hated this script and it basically resulted in Maureen O'Brian getting sacked, but it still turned out as a pretty good story with well acted performances.
Galaxy 4 is under rated. Its a decent simple story. Its just surrounded by way better stories. Steven is badly written due to it originally not featuring him but Ian and Barbara instead but he was written way better the previous story.
I don't agree that The Doctor tried to kill the Rills because of their looks. The reason he was sabotaging their ammonia extraction machine was to rescue Vicki from their capture. I think it was to gain an upper hand, where either the rills were killed or incapacitated, or they'd have to open up their ship to come out and repair the unit. He figured they were hostile once they trapped Vicki, which is a reasonable assessment from such actions. It wasn't until they explained their actions to Vicki, we realized they had no hostile intentions, but actually wanted to help. One thing that has been consistent with the Doctor all throughout the entire series, is that he only kills or destroys in self-defense. He also often is the one to try to deescalate hostilities, or try to work out a peaceful resolution first.
History of Susan Foreman!? I have to say, that’s my aunt! No joke, my aunt shares the same name as the Doctor’s own granddaughter! I even told David Tennant (nice guy) this at a con a few years ago.
Marga's speech about enjoying imagineing the horror of being trapped on the planet was pretty ironic given how it ended. She didn't have to imagine it, she was there.
@@videogamesworld01Yeah, that was The story reason But the reason he was written like that was because Steven malfat was a comedy writer and this is his last Haaraa And The he wanted to show how the world has changed over the course of the show
@dakcabrera That's it. Yeah. What is it doing here? It's the classic version of the sound, of course. Also, a little bit of trivia about that sound. They refined it in 1967 for Evil of the Daleks, kept it for Day of the Daleks, then went back to the classic version in 1973 for Planet then went back to it again in Death to the Daleks.
That novelization is laughably bad. "Vicki, I don't like your flaws. Feeling superior is disgusting. Men are so much better." Patriarchy isn't supremacy? What an ass of an author.
In nineteen sixty five many people in Britain knew all about how evil attractive young women could be from the news reels of the female guards at places like Belson and other death camps. WW2 was very much in people's memories and that is reflected in many dramas of the time including Doctor Who. Many villains tended to have Nazi traits. I don't recall any of my mates back then being particularly over concerned with the moral or political aspects of shows like Doctor Who, it was more about the Doctor and is companions battling the bad guys be they cavemen or cybermen, but we were only ten at the time of this series. You make a good point about the show killing the impact of the twist early on taking the edge of this story which was a shame. You mentioned Doctor Who considering stranding Vickie on the doomed planet, this was not the first time he had a dark moment, I seem to recall that in the first series he was going to kill an injured caveman with a rock but was stopped by Ian Chesterton. Something else to consider, only a small thing I know, but the quality of many of the teles back in the day wasn't exactly that great, they were black and white and worked with a scanning frequency of 405 lines, the definition wasn't the best and the sound could be a bit iffy. Screens could be a bit on the small side too so some of the questionable production values in these early programmes weren't that noticeable at the time.
I souly remember back in 2011 that Ep 3 of this story as well as Ep 2 of The Underwater Menace 'Which is getting a Re-release on DVD and a Blu-Ray release BTW' that was found to the point of being shown on The Aztec Special Edition DVD as an extra.
This story feels more like a Star Trek episode than Doctor Who, and I love it. I skipped it on my first watch of Hartell's era and only watched the animation that came out three years ago. I don't see the problems that other people have with it. I found this story enthralling and hope the missing 3 episodes are found.

Well, Margo's right in one point. For successful breeding you need more females than males. 100 females and one male can make 100 babies, but 100 males and one female can only make one baby.

That Hartnell line is burned into my brain, but it absolutely is tongue-in-cheek. The first doctor is often the butt of the joke for writers.

It has already happened. Long live the Chumbleys.

A shame we couldnt see them in the group shots, was it that hard to get blonde women in 60s outfits? 😂
Funny that Nu Who would rather give a cameo the Movellans and their ..aesthetic, than the Drahvins.
Maybe the costume/extras budget ran out?
I recall, there was some alien from Torchwood, or Sarah Jane in that crowd. No blonde Woman in a minidress, with a big gun. 🙄
