Hello, welcome to TheTrevTutor. I'm here to help you learn your college courses in an easy, efficient manner. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and follow me for updates. If you have any questions, leave them below. I try to answer as many questions as possible. If something isn't quite clear or needs more explanation, I can easily make additional videos to satisfy your need for knowledge and understanding.
I gotchu
Agent - 1:00
Experiencer - 1:40
Theme - 2:56
Goal - 3:57
Location - 5:23
Instrument - 6:40
Thank you. This was explained in a way much easier than it was taught to me at the lecture.
Thank u soooo much for the linguistics courses!
ty dude you are better than other instructures
Oh, that was great! Thank you. So useful
Will you be doing more syntax videos in January? I am moving up to my second syntax term next week and things are getting more complex and demanding.with the vocabulary and (dare I say it) jargon increasing alarmingly. Your videos are fantastic for explaining things clearly and simply; it would be great to have your take on the minimalist program, the projectionist approach, the constructionist approach etc.
well explained. i have cleared my concepts. Thanks for making it easy
this is really helpful thank u so much !
THANK GOD ITS NOT A RANDOM INDIAN GUY WHO IS EXPLAINING
Thank you so much.
Thank you!
May I ask a question? In the case: I gave a lecture to the class.
I understand the [I] as being the experiencer, too. Because the I experperiences and also perceives the act of giving a lecture?
Many thanks that was super helpful. But I’ve 2Qs: 1- is the source the location in the video, cause depending on the lecture I have: it’s the entity from which something is moved as a result of the activity expressed by the predicate. So are they the same? plus that’s apples to the instrument and patient (a person or thing undergoing the action expressed by the predicate.
Thank you so much!
Wondering how set in stone these definitions of roles are as I can think of many examples where someone could be said to be both an agent and an experiencer - e.g. "James is dying in the park" - he is experiencing 'dying' , but it could also be said he is actively dying. ?
This seems to conflate theta roles and thematic relations.
Is there a general word for all roles that "verb" (ie. agents, experiencers; the subject except when using a passive voice)?
...and another word for roles that are "verbed" (ie. themes, patients, stimulus; the object except when in a passive voice)?
....and another word for roles that are "verbed to/for/from/etc" (ie. beneficiaries, recipients, goals; the indirect or prepositional object)?
hey sir i got questions, I am learning linguistics for nlp. I needed not vast but good intro. Your videos did help me but can you recommend me some books. Thanks
Sir please give us name of lexicon mental Dictionary.
Please sir reply.
Hi. At 5:24 you give example. "He died at home." You stated "He" is Agent/Experiencer. Why is "He" not just Agent? If we change sentence to "He cooked at home." Wouldn't "He" be Agent-Initiator of an action? I'm confused. I didn't think a word could be both. I understand that a person that dies, he "experiences" death but based on the sentence structure itself I am confused as to how to see "He" as both an Agent and an Experiencer. Would you please elaborate? Thank you for the videos.
Experiencers, agents, i feel like studying some fiction science here :D hhh, the next you might find me making a game based on these concepts in the vid.
whats the differenced between theme and patient?.. jhon kicked the ball. here the ball is a theme right? becaz I found in many other sources that here the ball is a patient...
I have the same question, maybe there is a difference between a living entity and an object
clear explanation. Could you please .identify the role of NP in this sentence (Alzheimer is characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline.=
What is about Patient?
Thank you very much but ı didnt clearly understand the difference between location and goal.
I think the difference is in stationary vs. moving. So when you move into something or out of something, this thing is your goal. When you stay somewhere that is the location.
Isn't cookie in "John loves cookie" a stimulus instead of theme tho?
I am not aware of linguists using that term as a thematic role.
Complementizer Phrase:
wo
CP
C’
C TP
wo
All clauses, even matrix clauses require some kind of complementizer.
20) [CP [C' Ø [TP Asparagus grows in California]]]
Subject-auxiliary inversion:
21) a) Did John leave?
b) Have you seen Louis?
In Irish, yes/no questions are formed with a complementizer particle that precedes the verb:
22) Ar thit Seán?
Q fall John
“Did John fall?”
23) [You can lead a horse to water] but [will it drink]?
There is a question complementizer particle in English, just like there is in Irish. The
difference is that in English this complementizer particle is null (has no phonological
content). We will represent this null complementizer with the symbol Ø[+Q]. It has no
phonological content, but it must be realized or pronounced someway. The way English
satisfies this requirement is by moving T into the C head:
Tense Phrase:
wo
TP
T’
T VP
wo
Affix lowering vs. Null T
Cf. Examples 45 46 in the book
I still don't understand what is practical implementation of all this.
The volume of the video is too low for me
