Sometimes I’ll even break it down to just a measure or two or three at a time or a phrase at a time. And slow it very far down so I can make the right notes and correct articulation and that’s it. I’m happy at that point. I found doing that kind of focused practice I make faster gains in the long run.
Yes! That is a great strategy! And you can even break it down to just a beat or two at a time to start. Sometimes I even practice just 2 notes at a time!
I am a brand new player (only 4 lessons in) and this video was such a good reminder! I get really frustrated when I cannot consistently play in the upper register. (Still getting lots of squeaks or nothing ) I should be happy when I can get into that register and do some long notes , and not expect to go from Bb to C just yet. I just know what I want to play and feel it, but get really frustrated when I can’t play it. For example, I just got Moonlight Serenade to hopefully play for my school’s recital in June. I know and love this song and just need to be patient and go slow! Also I am 56 years old, so everything is slower when you are older!
Welcome to the clarinet! Those issues with squeaks or things just not coming out are very likely related to not covering the holes fully. You should check out The Next Generation Clarinet Method Test Drive which is free and will really get those fundamentals started in a good place. You can find it at www.quickstartclarinet.com/testdrive Let me know if you have any questions, and best wishes on your clarinet journey!
