When I was still farming, my father and I would go to farm auctions whenever there was one close enough or had something we were interested in. For us, it was a fun day away from the everyday grind of farm work. And it was some of the best times I had with my dad.
one thing i enjoyed is taking a few welding lessons 40 years ago and i now repair and make new my own equipment, the technology for welding equipment and machines has improved since i first took lessons, the machines are smaller and lighter, the one i first used was an OXFORD, MADE IN ENGLAND, 180 AMP ARC WELDER 3 PHASE 380 to 440 VOLTS... then i had the old diesel generator trailer as well to tow around, now ive got a small welder and small generator... both fit on the quad bike
good buy richard. up north of the border we call these farm dispenishment sales a "roup" selling off all the kit. Interesting comment you made towards the end about 2nd hand kit. If you total up in £££ the amount of kit that sits about on farms but is only used a few days a year, and spends the rest of the time going rusty...i shudder to think what it is all worth.....but keeps the accountants busy calculating depreciation and the machinery dealers trying to flog you new shinny (and very expensive with fancy brand names) kit...2nd, 3rd or 20th hand kit is often a better deal with a bit of tlc.
Great video. We always went to the auction on the last Monday before school started as a family. It was different than a farm sale but same concept. It was an outing for the whole family. We seen a lot if people that were neighbors & friends & us kids had a great time. Also great learning experience for us as kids. Such fond memories of days gone by.
Grab some wood or concrete blocks to put under each courner when you park the new 1 , will stop the frame rotting where its touching the soil over winter
I love a farm sale.trouble is so many are online sales since covid these days which obviously don"t have the atmosphere that the live sales do. my dad always yous to say if theres a lot of people at the sale nothing will go cheap.i think he was right there most of the time. its a shame you had to go home early i would have liked to see what all those tractors sold for
Great purchase maybe if you get the boys to give him a lick of paint help protect them a bit I would say it's a about right the price you paid are they slightly bigger than your old one?
I remember the farm sale on our farm when I was 7. Sad day. It wasn't our farm but we lived on one of the 4 homes located within the centre of the farm itself, Grandad worked on the farm. He passed, the owner of the farm sold up, we had to get up and leave too. Sad, but it was interesting seeing the sale of all the equipment you'd been surrounded by for your life (short one I admit)
Don't worry about what you paid for it rich all that matters is your happy as you said it will last you for the next 15-20 and compared to a new one it's cheap thanks for taking us along with you to the sale I'm missing them
Do you have any paint left from Farmer P's trailer project? Give the frame a coat to prolong its life and you'll get some colour matching going on too.
Also, the sad state of things today, even if you buy a brand new one, will it out last that one? or more likely, will it end up packing up quicker because the steel, welds, etc are all weaker because the push to increase profits over quality is greater these days!
It's odd seeing myself on here hah, the chain harrows will certainly do you good and going to a few sales anything genuine or good condition you'll be paying what you think is over the odds but that was a reasonable price for them.
Would have thought price was ok personally. Put yours on eBay and may get £300 plus so only cost you £220 ish. Not worth messing about. Don’t understand why the smart arse comments about could buy a new set for that etc. If you could they wouldn’t be worth buying. Sale prices looked reasonable though not much to draw in the punters!
@@thefunkyfarmer I bought a set of chain 4 meter harrows ex hire for £650 you should also consider a grass spike helps the grass a lot and takes a lot of compaction out
Not been to a farm auction but wow some items sell real cheap compared to items in similar condition on ebay I was watching chain harrow on ebay like them and starting bid on ebay was 1000 and last bid I watched was 1350

A touch off paint would make it look a million dollars! especially when explaining to the wife how much you spent.
Nice 1 rich.always a sad time for the farmers who have these auctions. Many story's to be told with all this kit.

Thanks for showing us your wonderful community. So much of this has been lost over the years
Sad day , a lifetime to accumulate and a couple of hours to dismantle
Grab some wood or concrete blocks to put under each courner when you park the new 1 , will stop the frame rotting where its touching the soil over winter
Congrats on the purchase, the timing certainly worked out didn't it, you've talked about replacing yours.
yes i was lucky they were local

Even cracked that would do some smallholding with 2 or so acres to do , great thing about auction is itll be sold as seen no combacks
I think Harry was bidding against you, every time he moved the camera the price went up.
Great wish we had sales like that in Ireland 🇮🇪
Looks a good buy to me. Always nice to get something at a sale and also puts a bit of cash in your dads mate’s pocket.
if you offset the money you will get for scrap on the old chain harrow and metal is sky hi price atm

Good luck with the purchase for the farm 👍

The old harrows you should take the frame off and scrap it the chains sell as frameless
Well done. 👍 👌 Nice road trip. Stay safe 🏴
Thanks for the video rich, Was brilliant as always..
That old farming implement could do with a hammerite painting so it looks nice and new
You forgot the tyres under the chainharrows
got plenty of those😁
Bloody hell, that auctioneer works fast! You can’t see anyone bidding!
4 minutes in and already at the food wagon 👍 Good man 😀
Love an auction, missed them the past year. Crack On!
😄
Blinkin hell u paid plenty for ur chain harrows . Hope they do well sir . All the best
You can get new chainharrows for how much you paid for them
NO YOU CAN'T
I think you did alright if they last 20 years it's 50p a week plus the vat you could of harrowed the field as you came out👍🏻
when you can buy something beside you means a lot also , sometimes getting the thing hauled home can get expensive in time and tires on trailers
Do you have any paint left from Farmer P's trailer project? Give the frame a coat to prolong its life and you'll get some colour matching going on too.
yes was thinking of that as a summer kob for the boys
Some of that old stuff idea for blocking gateways and stopping poachers lol

You going to paint them like the Norton trailer????
The Auction is run the same as in New Zealand farm auctions
Repair it and use both of them.job done in half the time.
Nothing wrong with second hand great video rich
Great video Richard keep them coming 👍👍🏴🏴😎😎🇬🇧🚜🚜👩🌾👩🌾
Great video 👌
Change the accents and I could be back in Ireland 40 years ago at a dispersal sale.love the video
Some of this small ploughs will end up with a lick of paint & put in a flower bed for £700
just go spring calving and make the most of grazed grass thats the only way forward basically
Good day Boy good deal on chain harrows. Does anybody else know what 574 -674 went for. Thanks From Ont Canada

Watching further in as this was a dispersal all of it sold, the entered lots might not have though.
yes i think the price was fair in the end
Love your videos and your boys keep up the good work.god bless.
I love that you left so that you didn’t buy something else hehe 😂
That bell reminds me of primary school
Saved a few £££s there Richard as you said just get used once or twice
At least it's cheaper then a new set

Mr John pullin brilliant guy
You maybe able to sell it to your neighbour who borrowed them before .
