At various times during the pandemic, it has recorded some of the highest COVID rates in the United Kingdom. VICE World News reveals how deep-rooted cultural beliefs and government distrust are fueling crime and vaccine hesitancy.

I used to visit Southall a lot - great place to buy food and fabrics - and I always respected Sikh values. With a compassionate government and fuller intergration into the community by local authorities a lot of the issues specific to the area could be better addressed; that said, it is unlikely that any major political party will prioritise a section of the public which have long been a target of discrimmination and neglect as it is often seen as a vote loser among other constituencies.

I've visited Southall a couple of times.....it didn't look (very) poor to me. In fact, it was really nice to shop there. Of course my opinion is only made by short visits and the first impression. People were friendly to me over there. I wish every inhabitant of Southall all the best for 2022
South all is fine. I’m from London and have been there many times. There are much worse places in London. The problem is with people being there illegally. They earn next to nothing and are exploited. The UK isn’t tough enough on it because as usual they are afraid of being labelled racist. Indians do pretty well in the UK. I think they earn more the indigenous Brits. Good luck to them. But we should really crack down on the illegals and fine those hiring them and exploiting them.
The high street is good, if you go deeper into the estates backstreets it’s a different story but this piece definitely doesn’t portray it in a good light. Light everywhere there’s good and bad things

My Grandfather was born in 1933 and lived in Southall throughout the blitz up until the 1960s. I used to think he was a racist old bigot, he's snuffed it now and after a walkthrough Southall the other day, I finally understand the old boy's language.

I'm an American with Indian descent. I will say my parents and I took separate stances on the vaccine. I think a lot of Punjabi culture is predicated on unity among community/gurduwara(temple) members. There is certainly some culture shock to Indians who do move abroad to the US, Canada, or the UK. I believe it has to do with generations of Indians living abroad coming back to their villages in India and flexing on them with their toys or other displays of wealth. I do have distant relatives who live in the London area and they've described a similar scenario as mentioned by Vice. Surrey in B.C. Canada is very similar to Southall.

Yep I live In another suburb of BC and Surrey gets a bad reputation for being a gangland but it’s not just because of the general Sikh community it’s because the ones here are descended from farmers and came from poor families. They own a lot of farm land here in BC though and they have gotten rich now from it over the decades.

I find this so damn odd because I'm from NY, Queens to be exact and Indian neighborhoods in the entire metropolitan area thrive. From the city to the surrounding suburbs Indian and Asian neighborhoods are desirable and keep a high value. None of our prisons are filled with any Asian people. Who said they are not in the UK? These are the poor ones and no matter how the entire society thrives, some will still be leftover. Other areas have a thriving Sikh community, and you just group everyone as Indian. There are Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and a minority of Christian. Each group has its successful group and the less well off.
They go their on tourist visa or a visa to visit their family members, then they start working off the record books in fields or out of the city limits as manual labour, get paid in cash and stay off the record. Students also do this but they mostly do computer related work from their homes after college like making excel sheets etc, they get paid in cash too.
Indians tend to do quite well I've noticed and have been to some nice areas in the west of London. Filled with mainly Indian people. If you compare; Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. Indians are the ones who are doing well out the x3. Anyhow, aren't asians in UK disproportionately high earners...?

As an Indian in America who grew up rich, it's an odd feeling to see Indians struggling financially in a first world country. It's not something I'm used to since basically all Indians in the USA are well off.
Ive been to south hall a lot. Only for shopping and eating out. And every time we go, I see something different. One time it’s 2 druggie’s running up and down the street shouting, with poles in hand. Another time it’s a mental man singing, dancing and ‘preaching heaven’ to people. The next day, it’s a huge gang of teens harassing an old man and running in between cars. Then it’s a drunk man rolling around alone on the floor. (All true stories). These people need help. Some sort of financial aid or something

Being an Indian living in America, this really gave me a different view point because you barley find any poor Asians or any homeless asians in the US.
It’s obviously not an exact parallel but south Asians in the UK are like Latinos are in the US since they’re probably the largest minority group and they come from a variety of socio economic backgrounds.

I live in Paris on the border of Aubervilliers and most of the homeless are Bangladeshi and Indian. Many don't speak French and are happy to have someone to speak English with when they hear me talking to my daughter. They don't look homeless at all. They use the public baths for 2€ each morning, pack their camp up during the day and go to all of the shops on avenue flandres asking for work.
