We need a veteran point Guard, so I would pay him 42 million a year. Cam Johnson’s bidding is going to start at 25 millions…every team want a wing with shooting and length. GMs want Cam
I like the thought of Cam Johnson. He's a Restricted FA so it'll be interesting to see what the Nets decide to do and how much it'll take for them not to match. I also like Jerami Grant from Portland. He's unrestricted and makes around $20M so there would need to be a significant financial commitment from Houston to bump his salary and lure him to a team currently rebuilding. Dillon Brooks isn't my favorite player by any stretch but could probably be had for reasonable money (he's unrestricted, making around $12M currently, and his stock isn't exactly high after 'poking bears'...) and plays good defense. If I'm Houston I don't want Harden at the money he's going to command considering it'll be the last significant payday he has entering his age 34 season. I don't trust him as a leader or a mentor for the young core of players. The Rockets need to define their new team culture with Udoka as the leader, and if I'm the Rockets I'm not paying Harden $40M-ish to possibly become a cancer on a young, impressionable team if he feels like he's not getting his touches or becomes disenchanted with being held accountable by the coaching staff if he's not showing effort on defense. The juice simply isn't worth the squeeze with Harden in terms of fit, attitude, or value. If I'm Houston, I allocate the $40M-ish that I would theoretically pay Harden and spread it around like you mentioned. Give me Cam Johnson for, say, 4yrs/$60M ($15M in Average Annual Value), Dillon Brooks for 3yrs/$45M ($15M AAV), and draft Amen Thompson. That STILL leaves Houston with around $30M in salary cap in case they want to swing big on another FA or want to use that to absorb a bad contract to gain future draft capital from a team looking to move off of an untradeable deal (I'm looking at you, Ben Simmons...).
@@rickyeager5762 Don't get me wrong, I don't mean acquire Simmons to actually play him...but if the Nets want to get off of his contract then Houston would have room to absorb these last two years remaining if, in return, the Nets give up their 1st round pick in 2025 and 2027 (HOU already has 'swap rights' with Brooklyn due to the Harden trade but this would convert the swap rights to outright first-round picks...). Houston could then package those picks to get an established player to play alongside Jabari, Jalen, Sengun, Tari Eason, etc...But, trust me, I'm no Ben Simmons fan. I was basically making the point as to how much cap room Houston currently has and how I wouldn't want it squandered on Harden. But if we're talking about Houston trading for Simmons thinking he'll be an actual asset then I'm right there with you -- hard pass on that. My thing was -- worst case -- allow the Nets to trade Simmons into Houston's cap room along with a couple of first round picks, let Simmons sulk for the next two years and, meanwhile, use those Brooklyn picks to trade for an actual player that could help them.
