    I now quarantine my new fish before introducing them.I’ve been fish keeping for 10+ years buying from big box stores and smaller stores and never had a problem. Very Recently I’ve noticed a lot of stores are neglecting fish and selling sick ones is very common. In a matter of a month I had gotten 2 clown loaches and a tetra from country max which all had ich and infected 3 of my tanks. Then after all that was done and fixed my girlfriend went and got a new beta from PetSmart, she didn’t want to quarantine her because “she looked and seemed fine”. About 2 days after adding her to her beta sorority tank with 6 other female bettas and a baby pleco the entire tank was fouled and sick just by adding one fish and now she doesn’t want to fish keep anymore. Please please please listen to father fishes advice when it comes to this stuff! It may save you’re entire tank that you worked so hard to get together!

      The most important lesson beyond keeping new fish in Quarantine is to s top buying fish from big box stores. They deliberately sell sick fish to new hobbyists with the intent purpose of upselling hundreds of dollars in medications and special equipment.

    Hey Fatherfish! I want to thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. I recently set up a 40 gallon breeder with a deep substrate and planted it and notice a difference already. I have a question. I heard others mention a quarantine tank shouldn't have plants or Sub (substrate) due to possible spread of disease staying on the plants. Do you agree, I ask cause you suggested to have a deep sub and plants if that is the tank the fish will go into after. Thanks in advance!

    Dear Father Fish, I have been following your advice and am very happy with my new natural aquarium here in Portugal. I have one small issue that I haven't found addressed in any of your videos I have seen so far: earthworms came with the mud I put in the bottom, and they have been digging the mud and depositing it on top of the sand! These are clearly aquatic earthworms, capable of living in these conditions indefinitely, I have seen them often here. The tank has been set up several weeks ago and there's a growing layer of mud on top of the sand, and the water is staying cloudy. Is this "bad" enough to justify starting over?
    Thank you so much for your advice!
    Good health for you and yours.

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  Год назад +2

      This is the second time I have heard about this. NOW I understand what is happening. They are not earthworms but they are segmented worms, like earthworms. The popular food blackworms is a segmented worm that can grow to 6 inches. That is what these are. Add 1/" of sand every 3 days until the problem resolves itself. It is not a serious problem except for the dirty water. A sponge filter will help. Also, begin building a food web of leaf culture from a pond or creek. This will provide added biology to the tank that will act to control the worms. AND it will absorb the soil that is being brought to the top.

    • @Alberto.coentrao
      @Alberto.coentrao Год назад

      @@FatherFish thanks! The tank has lots of diversity already, and I haven't even added the fish yet! Just waiting for the plants to grow a bit more so that the critters have some place to hide in.
      Do you want me to catch and film one of these worms for you?

    at 7min30ish you speak of ick and show it on axolotls which are coldwater creatures.. if ich happens to get onto/into them..would it not be detrimental to their health to raise the temperature to such degree?..

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  Год назад +3

      I missed that. The axolotls do not appear to have ick. I did not catch it. They have a fungus that is running rampant because they are being kept, apparently, in a very unhealthy environment. Ick rarely attacks scaleless slamanders.unless their slime coat is compromised by severe stress. There are chemical treatments such as Quick Cure - malachite green and formalin - that are effective in low doses for this problem. The fungus can be treated with salt. You are correct a high temp for this animal may cause it to suffer. It is a spotted salamander that lives in other semi tropical and temperate environments that may well reach close to 90 f degrees in nature. Because the axolotl has been kept in ca[ptivity for many generations it is much less susceptible to warm temperatures. Care should be taken treating them but I would first try a salt bath with an elevated 84f temp.

      It's either putting the new fish into an already established tank with 2 other fish (quarantine tank) or putting the new fish in your main tank which means all your other fish will be disposed of as It is literally a risk that your new fish are carrying diseases. So either way... You can't choose because what you choose you'll end up with the same result just on a different scale. So they are NOT really disposable fish for that matter.

Why would you want to put a healthy fish in a quarantine tank to see if the new fish have any disease when the new fish will tell you the same during the quarantine period!
