This video was just what I was looking for, it helped me dye my medium blue cotton fabric to a black fabric. Lol, the dye mixing was a science project of sorts and having to consider the shade of blue of the fabric to begin with, and then adjusting the dyes accordingly, then hitting the color mark, all through the way the "water" looks on paper, lol mad science!! Thank you for the inspiration.

Is it just enough water to cover the fabric or did u measure it out. Also how much vinegar

I didn't measure the water out, I just filled each pot and experimented with how much dye to add.
I find that if the fabric has less space to move around in the pot/water you will have more of a splotchy, marbled pattern on your fabric when finished. So, it depends on how you want your fabric to look in the end, evenly coloured needs more water.
About 2-3 tablespoons of vinegar are added to each pot.

I would wash separately and I wouldn't recommend washing in a machine.

Why did you not want it to boil? Would it mess up the dye?

Lol, I think this goes back to my grandmother teaching me to boil stains out of fabric, I guess this thought was counterintuitive to what I was trying to do.
Boiling wouldn't mess with the dye, but it might affect your fabric and cause it to shrink.

Is there anything you can use in place of vinegar?

I have heard that salt can be used, but I personally haven't tried this method.

I do! I just make sure that there are now raw edges.
