If you never saw Shaq play in person it's hard to understand how fast n strong he was. He was extremely skilled under the basket and had so many moves beyond the slam dunk.
Exactly, you had to watch the games he played to understand his appreciation. He is one player that stats cannot define. He literally changed the way the match would be played. The opposing team would just focus on Shaq which would create so much open opportunities for the rest of the team. As soon as he gets the ball in the post, you had to right-way double team him, or he scores or gets in the line, and when you double team him either he scores or finds the open person outside. Also, he would make the opposing team get into foul trouble because they had to keep on fouling him to stop his scoring and that lead to a nightmare because eventually, there are not enough good players to stop his team. I have not seen a center like that since Shaq.
@@ab-hv8qs Wrong. Shaq’s footwork was every bit as elite as Hakeems was. You are just ignorant about tight low post play. Jump hook, drop step, tornado spin and the dunk.
Shaq was quick and powerful . That weight he had in LA in his MVP season aint fat . That was muscle and u bet everyone knew he was dominant. Never ever gonna be another Shaq . Man was getting 28-15-3 in his prime
I remember when in the early 00s went to Shawn Kemp's official website and I asked him "who's the toughest guy for you to guard?" And since Shawn Kemp was a power forward, I expected that the was gonna say something like Charles Barkley or Karl Malone, but he told me that it was Shaq, because of his size and incredible strength. I also remember when Kobe said that if Shaq had his (Kobe's work ethic); “he’d be the greatest of all time. He’d be the first to tell you that. This guy was a force like I have never seen. It was crazy. Generally, guys at that size are a little timid and they don’t want to be big. This dude did not care. He was mean, he was nasty. He was competitive, he was vindictive. I wish he was in the gym. I would’ve had f-king 12 rings.” Another great video! Keep up the good work!
Shaq was absolutely amazing, especially in LA. He was so dominant and always commanded respect on the court. He was probably the last dominant big man outside of Tim Duncan, in my opinion.
My first time seeing shaq was when i was 9 years old. All i remember was that how can a big person like him move that fast. This was back in 2001 vs sonics. He just killed everyone in staples. Absolute force. When i saw him dunk i was literally scared for the people around him.
Shaq was a dominant monster in the paint... AND he benefited officials swallowing their whistles on so many offensive fouls (lowering his shoulder and charging, and what Shaq readily admits to "throwing 'bows", etc) and the good fortune of having so many of the top tier 80s/90s centers (Olajuwon, Robinson, Ewing etc) all dropping off at the same time after 1998. Wilt would have averaged another 10+ points a game if he could bull rush people like Shaq. And if you weren't a Lakers fan, it was difficult to watch above-average centers get creamed by Shaq, and get in foul trouble for playing the slightest bit of defense on him (older Mutombo, Smits, Sabonis to name a few). It really led to some garbage basketball for years because the only way you could defend Shaq was flopping and/or Hack-a-Shaq. When Shaq threw a 'bo on Hakeem, the Houston center shrugged it off and proceeded to dominate Shaq 4 straight games in the 1995 Finals. But let's also keep in mind if Shaq tried that stuff with players like Willis Reed or Bob Lanier, he would have been body-slammed into the Lakers bench.
@@AcousticOlli If you stuck 1962 Wilt Chamberlain in the 2002 Eastern Conference, he'd be matching up with the likes of Todd MacCulloch, Tony Battie, Andrew DeClercq, Courie Blount, Kwame Brown, almost washed up Alonzo Mourning, Marcus Camby, Ben Wallace, Elden Campbell, Antonio Davis, and Brad Miller as the starting centers (+/-) of the top 8 East teams. Only Ben Wallace and Antonio Davis could even begin to match up to Wilt physically, and on their best nights they might have held Wilt to 44 points. Never mind that prime Wilt could just dunk on any of those guys at will with his otherworldly natural athleticism, y'all seem to be forgetting his wide variety of high percentage finesse offensive moves: the jump hooks, fadeaways, bank shots, finger rolls from any angle. Oh, and he'd average around 20-30 rebounds and 12-15 blocks a game, no big deal. AND if he got Shaq's superstar calls, and was rarely called for offensive fouls??? Y'all need to do your homework.
@@AcousticOlli I'm not even a huge Wilt Chamberlain fan, so I'll consider your counterpoints. That said, I think Wilt was an athletic freak of nature for any era, not just of the 60s. I don't see why he'd play less than 48 minutes a game in the 2000s, still getting up 30+ shots. (If Allen Iverson in 2002 could put up 27.8 FGA per, shooting under 40%... yeah Wilt would get those shots in). Yes, Wilt was famous for choking in the playoffs, but he was going up against fierce competitors like Russell and Reed. You may just be overstating Shaq's *relative* dominance.
When I was a kid watching Shaq, I always thought of him as the best and most unguardable centers of all time, crazy to think that there were better centers.
A big part of shaq's success is that he's almost impossible to officiate. He basically backed people down to where he could shoot a little hook and he was just so much bigger and stronger than almost everybody he played against they couldn't do anything about it. In reality it's an offensive foul to do this. If a defender has his body parallel to an offensive player and they make contact and knock you backwards that's a charge but Shaq did it so much if the refs called it correctly he would foul out in minutes so they just didn't call almost all of it.
Brilliant. Shaq was awesome. I never really understood his game, but he was a delight. Also, one of measures I have is when you see Hall of Fame players playing a tribute, you might as well listen in. I saw Shaq put Divaks on his back. I thought "that's a foul" but no it went on. But Shaq seems to be a really kind person and I watch him on TV regularly. Go Shaq.
For those who haven't watched Shaq play, it was almost comical. Imagine if there was a high school kid playing against 2 middle schoolers clearly outsizing them. That's how it looked like in the NBA where the other team is literally throwing the 2 largest and strongest person they can find. And teams draft people on the bench just to give 6 fouls a game. Absolutely bananas.
Guy that big - that massive - to make his nut AND retire, healthy, was awesome. I'm sure he could've stuck around, longer, but he saved that giant frame of his rather than saddle himself with a bunch of aches and pains the rest of his life. Kudos to him for that.
i was born in 87. loved the game of basketball as far back as i can possibly remember. and even though i wanted to be like mike, shaq ( and dennis rodman believe it or not), was my favorite player. i used to have a black orlando shaq jersey i wore all the time ( and a black dennis rodman bulls one). i feel like shaq is kind of underrated. maybe because he played on so many teams? maybe cause he got so big? maybe the kobe shit? idk. i just know if i needed a center on my team, it would be hakeem the dream, or shaq. you have to give respect to wilt and kareem and bill russel, but shaq or hakeem, in my opinion, are the greatest 2 true centers of all time.
I agree -- he could have been better, but he was awfully darn good. I would love to have seen Shaq and Wilt face off. People underestimate Wilt's strength. He was something. I saw him lift Willis Reed off the ground one night at MSG. Willis had hooked his arm over Wilt's who was holding the ball low with both hands. Wilt wanted to dunk so he just literally lifted Willis off the ground and dunked with both hands. I swear that is a true story.
You said it best…. Shaq couldve been the best big of all time if he wanted to… Jordan and Bird couldve averaged 50 per night if they wanted to…. THAT is the era difference…. The players in that era werent out for themselves or only caring about how many points they scored.
