    This episode titled “Baja California Gold” from the TV series “True Adventure”, produced in the late 1950s / early 1960s and hosted by Bill Burrud. This episode covers an expedition to Baja California, Mexico, to explore the Socorro Gold Mine, where they collect samples in search of gold while discovering mission ruins from the native gold miners. The Socorro Mine shown is apparently now defunct; it may also have been called the Garibaldi Mine.
    Host Bill Burrud introduces the episode (00:06). An expedition crew rides horses (00:31). A cave (00:44). A human skeleton in the cave (00:54). Host Bill Burrud speaks about the gold expedition (01:00). Views of the nature in Baja California, Mexico (01:23). A car arrives at Meling Ranch (01:48). The Meling family (02:16). Ranch crew member, Lee Hansen speaking to Phil Meling (02:40). Phil picks a branch from a willow tree (02:55). He shows Lee a stick split in two, holding it at the ends, claiming the stick will turn as they near water (03:17). Phil walks around and the stick turns (03:28). Lee takes one end of the stick, and they walk around as the stick turns (03:59). Lee holds one end with a pair of pliers and the stick turns (04:33). A gold-searching expedition crew is traveling by horse (04:56). Views of the Baja Socorro Gold Mine (05:40). The expedition crew walks around the location (05:49). They investigate a cave (05:57). The crew continues walking around (06:23). The crew’s geophysicist investigates a rock (06:28). Two members hold divining rods/dowsing rods indicating a deposit of non-ferrous metal (06:39). A crew member hammers a pole into the ground to mark the area (06:53). Other members locate another non-ferrous metal deposit using divining rods/dowsing rods (07:05). Another pole is hammered into the ground to mark the area (07:37). Crew members start searching the soil to locate the deposit (08:08). They continue to determine the deposit’s area using the divining rods/dowsing rods (08:22). The crew’s geophysicist discovers indications of gold (08:35). He uses a hammer to break a rock and discovers gold specks (08:49). He identifies a vein of gold bearing ore (09:07). He licks the rock (09:10). He collects rock samples in a bag (09:25). The limit of the deposit is drawn onto paper (09.30). Phil Meling uses his willow stick to locate an underground stream (09:36). The stick begins to turn (10:10). Phil climbs onto his horse to track the located water (10:23). He adds markers along his path (10:39). Expedition members dig holes to provide ore samples for assaying (10:56). They search through the dug-up dirt using water to filter dirt from gold bearing ore (11:14). Mrs. Meling discovers black sand, which often indicates gold (11:50). The expedition crew continues their travel on horse (11:53). They climb off the horses and walk into a hut previously inhabited by native gold miners (12:11). They set up a campsite (12:40). They cook food (12:47) and rest while eating (12:49). A bonfire (12:56). Footage of the expedition crew members (12:59). Two crew members start a hike at night (13:26). They arrive at a mission graveyard with scattered human bones (13:41). They find a gold bracelet in the sand (14:19). They lift their heads as they hear a sound (14:30). Views of the crew hiking the next morning (14:41). They see mission ruins of structures built by the native gold miners (14:59). Footage of the landscape of the Socorro Gold Mine (15:23). The expeditions native guide leaves the crew (15:44). The crew continues to search for gold using a metal detector (15:52). The metal detector indicates the presence of metal (16:07) and the crew start digging in the ground (16:15). They find a piece from an old lock dating back to the Spanish rule in Mexico (16:31). The native guide and Lee Hansen arrive at the location of the old mine (16:51). They arrive at the mine’s tunnel entrance (17:23). Lee enters and explores the tunnel, discovering natives’ old equipment, unsafe conditions, and a human skeleton (17:33). He discovers a gold-bearing vein, and he collects samples (20:25). The expedition crew rides horse back to Meling Ranch (21:10). The expedition’s samples are tested at the Smith-Emery Co. in Los Angeles, California (21:43). An assay report confirms the presence of gold (23:41). The end (23:50).

    In my opinion the greatest channel on YT and also if I had one to choose to donate money...This is it.I Really appreciate all that you do at Periscope films...Honestly its incredibly important in my opinion.Who knows how many years these videos will be watched and shared due to your saving them for the public.Truly a great public service.Some of these films are just so intresting and such a great look into the past..

    Very interesting place I used to back pack into, in the 1990’s, cool to see what the elder Meling family looked like back then.
    I like bill burrud’s treasure show…they should make something similar, something simple:)

    Recientemente viaje por baja California y en un paraje cualquiera al detenerme entre la carretera transpeninsular vi una línea de cuarzo y cual seria mi sorpresa que tenia rastros de mineral increíble para mi, no iba en plan de mineria solo marque el lugar y seguí mi camino

    While they didn't seem to tell us the assay results of those samples, judging by the size of those assay buttons after they were cupelled, that was some damn rich ore.

    my cousin could witch . when he used a green branch it would turn in his hands like a fishing pole and the bark would come off the limb where he held it. Brother let me tell you it was on tight. painfully so

      Which witch you referring to? I've known the kind that actually have done actual magick, and as far as as the diviniation kind of witching, diving rods are for me a natural ability. There are places that I've only ever found gold with them, never without them.
