I saw this at the NYC public library with Ethan Hawke talking afterwards and I was just floored. What an amazing movie, amazing subject and thrilling performance by Ben Dickey.
Ethan Hawke is an amazing actor. His performance in First Reformed was harrowing and if you go through his list of movies they're all so good! Cool to see him on here!
true Blaze mentality right there. beautiful sad story. born in 89 when he died learned his name froom mike judges tales from the tour bus. I get the shivers deep in my heart from his lyrics and his humble down to earth personality. keep the legends alive
What a great movie. I didn't know Ethan directed and produced it, definitely appreciate that. I love that Blaze got a movie, his music is incredible. He was a great poet, fantastic musician. Towns is well known, but Blaze was a hidden gem. I'm so glad this movie was made
"Blaze" is one of the best films i've seen in a long time. This KEXP interview is fantastic. Congrats to Ethan & Ben for a job well done and thanks to Blaze for all the great songs.
I tip my proverbial hat to Hawke....what a beautiful movie, fantastic. Not many movie stars can express real art.....His direction nailed it. I also enjoyed his performance as the jazz horn player/vocalist Chet Baker. Both r wonderful movies telling the story of the artist’s commitment & internal battle, often a double standard involving the use of artistic expression to quiet the demons, yet crashing through self destruction as a result of self medicating those same voices.
I agree. I’m a music nerd. I made my own blaze foley bio pic in my head researching him. This was kind of spot on to what I imagined. That really surprised me. The way he filmed sexton and dickey was genius turned out to be one of the best bio pics I ever seen. Funny that he was so unrecognized while the movie definitely competes with Ray andWalk the Line.
This project gave me a new found appreciation for Ethan Hawke. Never really thought much about his acting either way, but he has shown another side of himself with this movie and his deep understanding of Blaze and life in general. I already was a huge huge Blaze fan and I find so many similarities between Ben Dickey and I. Large size musicians who can cook for a living and love to play Blaze Foley songs. Good on you guys!
I love this movie, "Blaze" is a modern classic. I have already watched it multiple times. I never knew these characters but we all know them in our own way. I've chased down a road or two of my own and in my way I have known lot's of great voices. Singing their own songs though I'm not sure anyone knows their names. Ty for a great film that did not take the easy route. Great and I would love to see an extended or directors cut. I swear I could tell after seeing it once that I would be plumbing bobing these depths or lack there of. ✌️♥️🙇
My guess is that Ethan planned to sing, but Ben Dickey was on a roll, so Ethan chose to ask Ben to do another rather than play himself. A wonderful, selfless, spontaneous decision, seems to me...

Loved the film and this video as well. Ben plays and sings these songs beautifully! I was thrilled to see Kris Kristofferson had a part in the movie. Blaze’s voice reminds me of Kris’s especially when he sings “If I could only Fly”

I love the bit at 23:30 about why great musicians make music. This is how I judge great music. Sturgill Simpson and Billy Strings do it for the sake of the song.
Can't thank you enough for this one, love the music, and really needed that interview too. Feeling inspired, ready to take on that balance. ...And how did I not hear about a Blaze movie till just now?? Priority this weekend..
Ethan Hawke is great. So intelligent and talented. I have always loved the parts he has played in the movie and I have been waiting for this movie on Blaze. I have loved Blaze's music since I heard him YEARS ago.
I would not say it was click bait. They just did not have a chance to film him without a guitar. The guy was there hugging the guitar the whole time! LOL
I've been around such great musicians who were not famous. The best drummer I ever heard in my 60-plus years was my friend Ron. He died too early. Rip. There are so many great singers that the masses will never have the blessing to hear. Needless to say. I loved singing and playing with them. None of us were into drugs. Most were not into drinking either. We all used to go to dinner and have a great time. As the song lyrics say, THOSE WERE THE DAYS. RIP to all my dear friends who passed on. Including my son. Who naturally had that Boys to men singing voice.
wow guys! i love what you have to say. im schooling my 12 year old guitar playin daughter up on Blaze n townes and kris n the beautiful john prine. Authentic voices of a life lived. Thankyou for sharing and telling stories that need to be heard.
Sybil Rossen is very much her own talent...her writing is incredible independent of this incredible story.... unfortunately her body of work to this point is not vast...but I am keeping my eye on her
I bought the movie cause I saw kris on the front of the case(I’m a huge Kris Kristofferson fan), not knowing it was a movie about Blaze Foley. When I found out with was about him I kinda freaked out and was instantly hooked when I heard Clay Pigeons playing. Great movie Ethan. Hope you make another one about Townes.
Blaze was a very wise man and cared deeply about his fellow man. I don't believe the movie captured his true spirit, but maybe what Blaze had in his heart really couldn't be.. captured. He did so much good for so many people, on a daily basis. Entirely aside from his music, if Blaze had never sang one word or played one note, Most everyone whose path crossed his would've been better for it. Most. And Charlie really nailed the Townes role. He sure did.
@@louieo.blevinsmusic4197 the Prine version has great backing musicians. But Prine’s vocals aren’t as strong. His version has a different character, beautiful in the way that a drawing of an old face can be beautiful.
Ethan Hawke’s voice is halfway down the road to Steve-O levels of raspiness 😄 This movie has the one of the most intriguing openings and the best final line of any movie ive seen in a long time 😊
Townes van Zandt must also have been a huge influence, a lot of similarities in the music. Sure Hawke is the known name in this interview, but Ben Dickey is the star of this show. A lot of us will look up Blaze's music after this.
Ole Petter Pedersen I discovered Blaze years ago through my love of Townes’ music. Blaze was a really amazing songwriter that unfortunately like his friend Townes was too self destructive to get out of his own way. It’s always been ironic to me that the only real success either of them had in their lifetime was from Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson recording their best song: “Pancho And Lefty” for Townes and “If I Could Only Fly” for Blaze. These are 2 of the very greatest songs ever written, not just country songs but songs in general. Both Townes and Blaze have become far more widely known after death than in life. And morbid though it may be I think that might have been their goal. Townes IS a legend, and Blaze will probably be one now as well with the release of this film. Can’t wait to see it.

Blaze* is a great film!
I wonder if Ethan is familiar with Justin Townes Earl's music.
I just found out he recently died.sad....his song "mama's eyes" is one of my all time favorite songs
Blaze and Townes were under appreciated (besides fellow writers) when alive.
Was “drunken angel” by Lucinda Williams placed in the film anywhere? If not , I’m sorry, I’ll still check it out.
It feels like Ethan might have enjoyed growing up in Austin through the 70's 80;s early 90's. I can't blame him it was pretty Amazing. :)
