Riki Rachtman: Connection of DIMEBAG's Murder & Randy Blythe's Murder Charges + Feud With Mustaine!

  • David Alan "Riki" Rachtman can be blamed for helping to revitalize the Heavy Music scene in the 90s. Every Saturday night in the early 1990's, there was a wonderful show called Headbangers Ball, hosted by Rachtman, that highlighted the heaviest, most intense and popular Heavy Music bands in the music scene.
Not only did Rachtman host MTV's Headbangers Ball during its prime era, but he has also been an ambassador to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal ever since. At present time, Rachtman hosts a NASCAR-themed radio show called Racing Rocks (heard on over 120 stations across America) and Nascar 24/7 Live. While Rachtman is not actively working in the Heavy Music scene today, he is still a huge fan of our music.
Recently, Rachtman called out Mustaine for treating him differently depending on the situation. When Mustaine and Rachtman would hang out, Mustaine acted like a friend. But when Mustaine was alone, he would talk smack about Rachtman in public.
Since we all love to hear about Mustaine's controversial ways, we decided to get Rachtman on the phone and let him explain exactly what happened. During a very honest interview, all of a sudden we started discussing the untimely death of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (whose 8th death anniversary is today) and the connection of such a horrible incident with the current legal battle that LAMB OF GOD's Randy Blythe is currently facing.
Without further due, here is our exclusive interview with Riki Rachtman.

My son was born in 96. And I had tons of episodes of Headbangers ball recorded on VHS. And I let him watch Headbangers ball, before I let him watch SpongeBob. When he walked in my house, at 21 years old, wearing a Cowboys from Hell t-shirt... I knew I did something right.
He often asks me, is there no standards anymore?

He is growing his hair out and i am proud of his playlist lol so my hats off to you sir for raising your child on proper music.

I hated what MTV did to Headbanger's Ball back then. First they pulled the plug on it, put a weak rock show in its place called, "Superock" with Matt Pinfield and then later MTV News put out an article titled "Metal Meltdown". It mentioned how most of the top metal bands were being dropped by major record labels in favor of rap and electronic music (Techno). They also talked about the dying of music being made with traditional music instruments and the growing popularity of music made with computers and drum machines. Collective Soul was one of the bands featured and they strongly disagreed. In hindsight, It looked a big marketing ploy that drastically changed (if not ended) a lot of (metal) music careers in their prime. Take bands like Anthrax (Stomp 442), Suicidal Tendencies (Suicidal for Life) and Biohazard (Mata Leo) for an example. A lot of their fans didn't even know that these albums were released at that time. By then, most major record labels were no longer putting the efforts in promoting metal music.

I never forget seeing Pantera on the Cowboys from Hell tour at the Ritz in Ybor City. It is so sad that the world has turned so evil that no one can experience what I experienced that night. We were encouraged to come up on stage and stage dive. I must have done over 30 stage dives that night. At one point, I went up to Phil and I put my arm around his shoulder and he put his arm around my shoulder and we were head banging together. I then went over to Dime and put my arm around his shoulder and I was head banging while he played his solo, I stopped and looked at him and he screamed, hell yeah! I went off and did another stage dive. Thinking about it now it gives me chills and blows my mind that someone was so evil that they did pretty much the same thing I did but instead, they murdered a legend. How could anyone do such a thing?!!! A band that so loved interacting with their fans. Now, no band can interact with their fans because of this, so sad! But I am glad I have such fond memories at the same time! I have seen pretty much every great metal, rock n roll and punk act from that era. That show was the best I have ever been to, hands down!

Im in Southern California and we have a radio station down here called KROQ and they had a show called Love Line and you could talk with Ricki and Dr. Drew. I remember i was out partying with my friends at a buddy's house and a friend dared me to call Love line. I was half drunk so at 15 i was fearless lol i called and actually got through. I had no idea what to say, and Babes in Toy land was the musical guest, so while my friends were in the livingroom listening on the radio i asked the dumbest question ever!!! I was like, how do you get a girl off? And the girls in the band knew i was 15 cause the que on the radio had my info and they were sooo cool about it and so was Ricki. In fact some of my key moves ive used since i learned from that phone call lol. My friends never let me hear the end of it though. Man i caught shit for like a year on that one. But fuck it!! Riki is right about the government not caring about metal bands... but he forgot that Metallica is a metal band and believe me because they are now in "the millionaires fame and fortune club", they would jump right in and save their asses. I'm not saying this because I hate or dislike Metallica. I LOVE their stuff up to the black album. I've had to face the fact that they sold out. I've talked to my other metal head friends and they agree. It took a little while for a couple of them to truly see it but they did come around. I miss the way music used to be back in the late 80's/early 90's. I don't think any of us Pantera fans will ever truly recover from the sudden and needless loss of Darrell. The only comfort I get from the loss of such a great talent and musician and someone who seemed to truly enjoy life, is that at least it was quick and he didn't have to suffer. It would be much harder to cope with a fact like he laid there and bleed out. That tiny comfort is all we have. But we will always remember him and thank the maker we will always have the bands music.
