i so agree and resonate with tip 3 personally speaking i have an added bonus locally of being relatively near sections of the PCT living in portland oregon that over the next year i plan to do several 1-3 hundred mile section hikes as preperation for my doing the AT
Thank you so much for this video! I love your genuine warmth and advice which comes from a place of experience. I just can't wait to get out there. Be well! - Holly
Another great video…I especially appreciate the last tip. Like you I saw so many thru hikers last year who cheated themselves of what I had…a complete experience of the WHOLE trail. I will add one more tip-take regular zeros. I averaged about one per week while on trail. Your body and mind need the rest and recovery and it allows time to catch up on your nutrition. I don’t think it slowed me down, as I was still able to complete the trail in 41/2 months at aged 60. Keep the great content coming!!!
So happy to hear you didn't miss a single mile of the experience. Thank you for sharing a big tip that I overlooked! We certainly did take regular zeros too. Need to figure out how many we took overall...certainly amounted to be a lot!
Hey Fern & Gypsy. Excellent advice. Should prove super helpful to future AT thru hikers! Definitely need a strong stubborn streak and have to push thru the pain. Hope you guys are well. EKG.
EKG! So great to hear from you. You're an excellent example of a resilient hiker. We hope you are having a really beautiful year. Any future hiking plans for you?
My hike took six months and 19 days. And I had 46 zeros . It’s good advice to hike, less big mile days, and take less zeros. When I would approach a town, I try to work it so I’d get there in the morning enjoy the town ,and walk out in the afternoon and camp. Try to make it like a 7 mile or 10 mile day.
❤❤❤ Great tips! Really appreciate and enjoy your content… so wish I had found you and could have watched your trail “in real time’ as I have been binge watching them…( I’ve never binge watched any tv/ Netflix.. etc.😂 Really glad you two have continued making videos ❤
This is really great advice! I struggled with being slower than everyone my whole hike. It was especially rough in Georgia when I spent all day getting passed. I'd always been told how stubborn I was but I didn't believe it. 😂
These are some pretty good tips. But I think it’s interesting that you acknowledge that everyone is looking for something different in the trail, but in the same breath say not to look for a tramily or hiking partner. Some people are looking for exactly that experience on the trail. So, I don’t think it’s fitting to tell people not to look for that. I do think people need to be patient and find a partner who has a similar style/pace as them or they won’t be happy or successful. But there’s nothing wrong with the people who are doing the hike specifically looking for that experience of camaraderie.
Totally! Everyone out there hikes their own hike, but if you are sacrificing what you want in order to continue hiking with others, then it's never worth it. You just need to stay true to yourself out there
Yes, we are not the fluffy bunnies, but the wolverines who waited for everyone to leave camp first, haha! I could imagine how difficult it would be as a solo hiker! Don't think I would have been an early riser then
Still one of the best vids. Every future thru hiker should absolutely watch this.
Thank you for the kind words, Robert!
Sounds like you had a great hike and really made the most of your thur hike. I will have to watch your hike😎

That's a really good ratio! We took at least 45 zeros I'm sure. Great strategy for arriving early to town too! Neros are the best.

Late risers - my kind of people 😂. I tried and tried to get into the early morning routine - failed miserably.

Could you please tell us how many days you guys took off the trail in your thru hike?
That is an excellent question John. I will calculate them and get back to you on this!
I was watching BadBat, and she was rattling off trail names of the folks over in the camp. Pretty sure I heard her say "45".
No way!! Do you think it was our 45?
@@hikinghomesteaders she gives names in the last minute. But she is interesting to watch all the way through. ruclips.net/video/nQpziINPw44/видео.html
So what is in the angel delight
Cheese, butter, red pepper flakes and some dehydrated vegetables! Truly delicious!
