Hiya, Atom was discontinued recently. Thankfully, other editors do the same job so you can still make your game! If you read thru the comments here, your fellow devs have solid suggestions to use instead: www.reddit.com/r/RenPy/comments/14ls993/atom/?rdt=36531
Thank you so much you are a godsend I was so intimidated especially since it seemed like everyone was skipping the "basics that I should have known" like you described in the beginning. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into making this guide it's still a bit overwhelming, but I feel much more confident in going forward with my own projects now.
You are so wholesome! This video was fantastic and instantly dispelled all worries I had about starting with Ren'py and breaking anything by clicking around lol. Thank you x1million!
Very usefull, I had problems at the start tho, finding wine and some tankyard, i didnt have those materials as of yet, and after that everything went smootly... Thanks for the tutorial....
Thanks for going through a demo playthrough with the code side by side - I think this lowered the bar for those who were on the fence of trying Ren'py, at least it did for me.
The first ten seconds alleviated so many of my worries lol. I have zero coding knowledge and so many tutorials use language I have no foundational knowledge on.
That would be me about opening up stuff I was doing some from a book that was up until I did a code and right below that give the warning you would have thank that would have been the first thing they would tell you. The warning was do not hit enter on this code as it will delete your hard drive well that was kind of late as I had hit enter and started reading the rest. That took me 2 months and lots of hunting to get that computer back up and running.
I recommend posting this and a screenshot of your error message to the lemma soft forums, renpy discord, or r/Renpy - you'll find great troubleshooting resources and people who can help there.
Hello...I'm having the most difficult time with getting started with Renpy. I first downloaded version 7.5.0.. In the script tab (I'm using ATOM), I could not get the additional dialogue that I typed in to the relaunch. It's logical to save using CNTR S. I have downloaded the lastest version of 8.0.1.. I'm still have the same issue with not being able to save using CNTRL S or CNTRL+S. I have had some difficulty cutting and pasting using TWINE harlowe with right click to copy or paste but I worked around it by using the keyboard short cut. When in Renpy, I save the game and the text turns from green to white, but when I launch the project, the added dialogue STILL does not load or appear when I play the default game. This is very very frustrating. I've tried various videos of which seemingly say the same thing with saving then loading, but I can't get it to save without going to the menu and clicking "save as" to where the text turns white and still does not display my added dialogue.
You may or may not still be looking for an answer on this, and apologies if this isn't the problem but - what file type is the script file saved as? The dialogue/narration text should display as green in your text editor. Renpy reads files that are in .rpy format, but if your script has somehow been saved as .txt or something else, that would probably be why it's showing up white and not updating in your project.

Thank you so much! And not currently, though after we return from break (Alanna had a baby last October and so Toadhouse has been on hiatus) we can look into creating some. Is there another method you find easier to use?
Mine didnt sugest ATOM as a text editor. should i find it seperately? Should i use something diferent? I may try eith the sugested visual studio code for now but im concerned this may make things harder to follow

Ty for the vid, but i need help. For some reason the program wont run for me, it says that it may not worm correctly, it needs GL2 or something like that. I tried going on settings, changed it, and FPS to 30, but it still wont run. I deleted and re-downloaded it again 3 times, changed places etc, but nothing worked. There was a NotePad saying the problems, there was bunch of stuff there, that some of the coding wont work and etc. Thankfully i still dont have much of a story, so untill finished i may have fixed it. Question, does the program work on CSS?
CSS as in the HTML style language? This program is really more for making visual novels. The infrastructure is built around that idea.
