In an interview valeska explains this song its about the day she left her home country and her mama drived her to germany. Her mom doesnt like to drive so Valeska made a special music mix for her. When she says Drive darling, she is singing to her mama and about the day she left her friends and family

In an interview Valeska explains that she made her mother mix tapes and labeled them "drive darling". When she made the decision to move to Germany from Switzerland her mother (mother hates driving) drove her and the listened to the mixed tapes as the drove. I get a Jason Bourne vibe from this vid. Makes me wanna visit Europe, except for the getting shot part. I don't have to leave Texas for that.

I've been listening to this the whole month. As a foreigner in the US, most people like me settle down in a city for a while, and it's normal that friends come and go. It is my first time to see the official video, and it surprises me that it's winter, cuz I've imagined the story in summer time, and totally different feeling. Love the song, and whole album.

The creepy men are the mean people who try to stop her from pursuing her dreams. Sonja acts as her mother and tries to protect her. They throw the tapes in the river because in real life, every year for her mom's birthday she writes her a song and records it on tape and titles it "Drive Darling" so they're throwing them away to forget the past. Sonia and Valeska are the band 'Boy', and moving to the same city made it a lot easier for them. They started in small clubs, and with small internet clips (long before these 'official versions') and became famous that way. No production company was interested in them until quite recently, I think.

The video is one thing but the song is based on Valeska's move from Switzerland to Hamburg, the far North of Germany, to join Sonia, the other girl (who is the driver in the clip). Her mother drove her. It may be worth listening to the text.

Shes bleeding cause she left her home to persue her dreams. She's homesick but she keeps driving. Then they throw the memories in the water. Its about the pain of transition and sacrifice for making it to where your heart is taking you. It was her mom who actually drove her though in real life even though she did not like driving. She loved her daughter and drove her away to her dreams. She left the nest to learn to fly on her own.
