Potential rename idea: shave the gerbil Keeps the same feel as “skin the gerbil” but also makes sense since the goal is to the get the trick nice and smooth (end result of shaving)
Ahhh skin the gerbil still put it in my combos. The days back when I was learning it I was on vacation at a lake house and just sat on the dock practicing this trick!!
What can I say, that was a very awesome video. Educating me(and the viewers). Good to know some of the history behind the tricks, the names, just terrific. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🤙🏽🍍🍍🍍🍍
I think the name skin the cat is a reference to the beginners gymnastic trick of the same name. It is a simple little flip you do w/ your body while hanging onto a bar so you can see how the yoyo trick resembles that a bit. Why that gymnastic trick is called skin the cat is beyond me.
You just blew my mind. I never knew about that. It sounds like the naming of the gymnastic trick might have also popped up the same time as the yo-yo trick. www.quora.com/Why-is-the-gymnastics-movement-called-skin-the-cat
@@DocPop I blew your mind. You taught me skin the gerbil. We'll call it even! The gymnastics trick described in that initial post seems a little different than skin the cat as it exists now. I do like the idea that the name goes back to the time of Ben Franklin and feel like it's completely appropriate to assume that Ben Franklin himself named it.
Currently having trouble with this trick right now, and thanks for the extra details on the tech. Hopefully will land it one go later. Specifically, Im having trouble with the transition to part 2 and then part in part 3 where you miss the first rotation, Wish me luck! hahaha
When I do that move, I like to pull my throwhand towards my stomach as I'm trying to miss the string on the first rotation. This pulls the string out of the way so you don't miss it, then you push your hand forward again to land the yo-yo on the string during the next rotation.
Thanks for the tip Doc, it definitely helped me land part 3! May I ask if you can give any tips for part 2? I am having a hard time transitioning from the front roll to the throw hand double trapeze. My errors are I miss both strings, will land on the inside string, or I will land on both strings but the double trapeze would make this weird slack causing the strings to shorten, sometimes hitting my throw hand. As a result, my yoyo loses its spin when I transition to part 3.@@DocPop btw, love your popcasts for I am a bit of a history geek as well! LOL! Thanks again and hope you can answer!
So happy to see this video.Happen to have been working on this trick recently but feel it is all disjointed.Having some context around flow and momentum really helps it make sense
Doc Pop just put a double or nothing + skin the gerbil challenge. I'm here to do a visual study, llearn a new trick, and learn some more yoyo history.. I'm still finding it hard to flip the yoyo around in a double or nothing.
Are you talking about that first flip, right after the yo-yo lands on the double or nothing? If so, I'll try to put a video up showing that. It's the weirdest part of the trick.
It's great that you are using Emily Hopkins for your music. She's kind of like a harp-version of you :) Real cool chick and a great channel. BTW, I learned Skin the Gerbil from Andre's tutorial probably ten years ago. Didn't know it was your trick. You never cease to amaze, Doc.
That this video about renaming tricks comes out on the same day as yoyotricks puts out their slackiside video is wild. (Personally, while the change to slackiside is needed and good, I think the new name is firmly in the camp of skin the cat weirdness... May we be skinning our gerbils while our sides are slack!)
Wow, that really is incredible timing. I had also been thinking about renaming that trick and a few years ago I had an idea about making that a key topic of a PopCast episode. My hope at the time was to get Paul E. on the show to talk about the idea of renaming it. Bummed that couldn't happen, but I'll definitely try using "slackiside" when referring to that trick. ruclips.net/video/XYI8tf0GHMI/видео.html
How did you get this amazing 1 minute slip time with your Yo-Yo? I can not make mine slip more than 40 seconds and at that time Yo-Yo is just about to die on me.

🎶 Sittin on the dock of a baaaay, skiiiiinning the gerbil...
I just learned Skin the Gerbil today. I knew you invented it, but had to hear the history. Thanks for making a vlog about that!
Thanks, I had a blast making this one!
Wow the editing is freaking amazing 👏
That's really rad to hear. Clifton B was the editor here. He nailed it.
@@DocPop 😳
It is a really short movie. Very good 👍

Yo! Got it! Thanks Doc.
♥️♥️♥️
Memorising. I'm 43 and just picked up the yoyo a month ago. This video is literally my life for the next 3 months.
Howdy, welcome to the hobby!
Awesome video :)
Beautiful Doc

@@DocPop yes it is. As tough as it is. I am enjoying trying to figure it out. It looks simple and I'm sure it is, but I don't see it or feel it yet.

Yeah, Emily is rad! I'm a sponsor on her Patreon too. That's cool you learned Gerbil from Andre. He's a good teacher.

Ah, yes. Gerbil Wave.
dear doc, please make a video history on the trick Hooplah!
edit: made a möbius version of this! :) ill share it with ya sometime
That's a good idea.
How did you get this amazing 1 minute slip time with your Yo-Yo?
I can not make mine slip more than 40 seconds and at that time Yo-Yo is just about to die on me.
i never knew that you made skin the gerbil
what would you name skin the gerbil if you need to make another name?
I think "Gerbil" is an okay name if it needed to be changed.
Great video, but if you rename it you'll have to fix the theme song…
... I hadn't even thought of that! Ugh, it's so catchy though!
