That's because Ellison, always a hugely temperamental and emotional guy, accused the movie of ripping off some of his stories and threatened a copyright lawsuit, and that credit was part of the arrangement they came to.
I have read about the story Ellison claimed had been "ripped off." It just involved some highly generic sci-fi tropes about an apocalyptic war (which in his story was in a very remote future), and two soldiers who were somehow ACCIDENTALLY sent back in time to our era, continuing their conflict in our time. There was also something about one of them saving a woman, but not because she was somehow "important" for the future, or because the other guy had specifically come to kill her -- as noted, the time travel was accidental and purposeless. Unfortunately, while making the movie, a young and naive Cameron carelessly made some remarks about how he had thrown together a plot that was somehow inspired by an Ellison story, and these remarks were on record and undeniable. Cameron just meant it in a humoristic and self-deprecating way, we can assume. But Ellison had what he needed to demand compensation, and wasn't shy about doing so. Cameron has made no secret about the fact that he came to consider Ellison a complete asshole, but the writer walked about with an unknown amount of cash and even had a rather undeserved "acknowledgement" inserted into the credits of Cameron's breakthrough movie.

There was a brief shot trimmed from the ending which showed the closed time loop to be even tighter, as the factory they destroyed the Terminator in (and which you might recall still has a fully intact arm after it was reaching outside of the press) is Cyberdyne. Yeah, Skynet only exists because of its own technology that it sent back to the past. And despite the shot being cut, Cameron still considers this an official part of the story.
Cameron's initial concept for the Terminator was that it would look like a totally normal person to blend in easily. Then he met Schwarzenegger, and immediately saw that he'd be perfect for the role of an unstoppable robot. And who was he planning on casting before that, you might wonder? Oh, just a hugely popular football player who'd done some dabbling in acting, who ultimately didn't get the role because the whole crew believed such a nice guy couldn't possibly be believable as a remorseless killer: OJ Simpson. So that's about as popular a joke subject these days as Luke and Leia's kiss.
I think he was more interested in Lance Hendrickson. Arnold and Lance are the 2 actors Cameron did paintings of as Terminator. Lance was the main guy before he met Arnie... but he got a part anyway.
Hey Sam, I've noticed when non-Americans watch "Terminator" they are pretty shocked at how easy it is for someone to just walk into a gun store and start buying up everything in sight. As long as you have the cash they'll gladly supply you with the weaponry.
The actress who plays Sarah Connor - Linda Hamilton - went on to star in a really good TV series adaptation of Beauty and the Beast with Ron Perlman, and more recently she's had a recurring role as General Eleanor Wright in the Syfy Channel series Resident Alien (starring Alan Tudyk).
Actually, when this movie first came out (1984), it was supposed to be a one off. I remember being quite pissed off when the news broke that there was going to be a sequel. I thought they were going to destroy one of my favourite movies of all time. Little did I know.
4:31 "Naked man 1 is here." LOL!!!! Sam, you're the best. 😁 14:41 And right here is why the iconic phrase "I'll be back" became iconic. And definitely do T2, too. But don't research it! It's good, even better. 😉
After the second one, I recommend The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a TV series that came out after the third movie, but retcons its events so it actually directly follows T2 and sorta, almost, kinda, not really ties in to T4.
After decades this movie is still great. Imagine, you would see this movie in your late teen years as is was published. I did and it was absolutely impressing.
"West bound on Oh-lim-PIC approaching Overland" My favorite line in the movie. I dont know why but ever since I first saw it in the theater that one little line sticks in my head.
On Rotten Tomatoes this has a perfect score and since this basically created the techo cyber thriller it deserves that score. But I think that Terminator 2 also deserves 100%.
this is where Arnold REALLY became a movie star, this and Conan The Barbarian to be exact, and this is where Arnold got his legendary "I'll Be Back" catchphrase.
Fun fact: It was suggested to James Cameron that OJ Simpson play the Terminator, but Cameron said no because he said that OJ wouldn't make a believable killer.
Fun Fact for you, Sam: The actor who played Kyle Reese, Michael Biehn, co-starred With Bill Paxton in the movie "Aliens" And Bill Paxton also co-starred in "Predator 2" with Danny Glover, so essentially, his character gets killed off by a Predator, an Alien Xenomorph and a Terminator
Wait till you see the sequel. Best action film of all time and best, most realistic use of CGI I’ve ever seen. But this one from ‘84 was basically made for the cost of a happy meal, even compared to 80s action movies. The acting is great, though again, not as good as the sequel. It isn’t just about violence and sci fi. There’s actually good storytelling here. And Bill Paxton is in nearly every James Cameron movie. And Weird Science, a John Hughes classic. Watching a John Hughes movie is a Try Not To Sing competition in and of itself.
Uuu, one of my favourite 80s' classics! 😎 I really enjoyed your reaction, perfectly spot-on, this was such a wild ride of a film and your reactions truly reflected the action and the dynamics! Loved the "naked man #1 & naked man #2" referencing 😂 Plus, you're really good with predictions, you literally made like 4 of them and all came true, I honestly have no idea how you do it 😄 I would definitely love your reaction to Terminator 2, didn't see the whole film but a lot of cutscenes so I think I do have the basic idea what will be going on there, and I can only tell you - yep, there are more naked people coming 😏
I feel like the fact that Terminator's plot involves time travel is much more well known, than the name "Sarah Conner" amongst people who haven't seen the movie. I mean it's pretty much common sense that a movie involving a cyborg is going to have some future aspects.
Okay, this was GREAT! And I am so here for the reaction to the sequel! If you want to see Linda Hamilton's twin sister's role in the second movie, you'll need to watch the extended edition. I'll enjoy either one!
Hey Sam, was really fun watching your reactions to this lol. You cracked me up with all your expressions when the Terminator had to work on himself lol. 😂😂 I remember that I never saw this at the theater, I waited until it got to Tv, probably HBO at the time. You may notice by the time you watch the 2nd movie, that J.Cameron likes to reuse some of the same actors, which is what I touched on after 'Aliens'. Michael Biehn, Lance Hendricksen, and as you pointed out- Bill Paxton were all in this and Aliens. And the Hispanic gal from Aliens is in the 2nd Terminator movie as John Connor's, Foster Mother. Cameron again used BP in Titanic as well. Anyways, for the time and budget, this movie was a good action film. 😁
Who other than Michael Biehn could have played Kyle Reese with so much heart and SOUL?! He's the reason Sarah has so much Determination. 18:40 The guy in the passenger's seat of that semi looks like of a lot like Scott from 'The Evil Dead'. 19:44 That scene right there is an homage to James Cameron's literal fever dream that inspired the whole story.
Amazing film very classic The Terminator directed by James Cameron starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. The line "I'll be Back" was ranked in the list of the American Film Institute (AFI) 100 Years....100 Movie Quotes. Thanks OGB an don't forget reacts Terminator 2: Judgement Day😎👍👍👍
Three sci-fi movie series had women in prominent action roles: Star Wars' Leia Organa, Alien's Ellen Ripley, and Terminator's Sarah Connor. James Cameron was a major player in two of them.
A bit of trivia...the last punk Terminator Arnold kills at the observatory is a young Brian Thompson, the shape-shifting alien bounty hunter on, "The X-Files".
Great reaction, Sam! Really looking forward to your watching T2. Without giving away any spoilers, there are a number of shots, scenes, and lines of dialogue that echo the 1984 original in some very creative ways. It’s truly a blast; if you liked this one, you’ll absolutely love TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (1991). It’s one of those rare sequels that’s actually better than the original, but which requires that you see the original in order to better appreciate it.
Introducing: The Hero's Journey of "Sarah Connor," who begins as a diner waitress and ends up an Icon! (And an action badass like "Ellen Ripley.") 22:39 Talk about obsolete technology! That is an Eastman Kodak Kodamatic 940 that used Kodak Instant Film. This instant picture technology was developed by Kodak and Fuji to get a piece of Polaroid's market. Miffed, Polaroid sued Kodak Instant Film out of existence, but allowed Fuji to "keep it domestic," before "going away like Pontiac." The last one standing today is the Fuji Instax system, since digital photography turned Kodak into "the ghost of Rochester."
You can stop after T2. It's your choice, obviously, but the first two movies in this franchise are really the only ones you can call essential viewing. People will tell you to see the Extended version, and I understand why, I have to say for the sake of artistic merit, the original theatrical or Special Edition cuts are more appropriate for a first time. The big difference is the ending, and without spoiling anything...the Extended version feels a bit too tidy. Either way, T2 is going to blow you away. The first is my favorite since I gravitate toward horror movies, and essentially, The Terminator is a slasher flick with a cyborg killer. The second is one of the best action movies around.
Hi O. G. Bojangles, thank you for choosing " Der Terminator ". This movie has " Arnold ". Here is a nice soundtrack cover inspired by this movie: RUclips video: The Terminator Theme (1984) Live Cover " Hey! "
The first two Terminators are required viewing... after that, well, if you have the time... I have not seen any of the TV series based on this franchise, but people say it is pretty good. I can tell you loved this one, and hope to see T2 soon. It is great. Keep on doing what you do -- funny and endearing.
great reaction. Part 2 is also incredible. The third is panned by many but there are some good scenes in it (in my opinion) and with that one I feel the series ends.
Same. To me, there’s something satisfying about 3. I think it’s that the existential question surrounding the first two is “can the future be changed or is it set in stone?” The third answers that.
I have always loved this movie's tragic romance. Kyle spent his whole life falling in love with just a photo of Sarah, and the legend about her John told him. Then a miracle happens, he gets the chance to go back in time and meet her. She loves him back. He told her that he always wondered what she was thinking about in that moment. He lays down his life to protect her. Then we see the moment when the photo is taken. At that very moment, she was thinking of him. And she would spend the rest of her life mourning him as she raised their son to be the hero he remembered. Fun Facts: The cop says there are 30 cops in the building. If you add up the number of times we see the Terminator open fire, and the times we hear it fire in the distance while the camera is focused on Sarah and Kyle, the number comes to 30. This movie was so low budget that much of it was filmed without proper permits. So it was often a case of, get their shot, then split before the cops show up. This became a huge problem when filming the climax. The full sized Terminator Skeleton was made of steel. Miscommunication with the props department, it was supposed to be made of something much lighter and painted chrome. So it took 4 men to lift. It's not possible to move quickly when you have to lug around an 800 lbs prop.
12:15 one of the exceptionally very few/rare elements that fans of the films point out… Cops are armed with low power pistols…yet terminator said “oh shit, the cops” and RAN AWAY…rather than just killing her right there and then easily…??? But movies gotta movie…
Great reaction! I wouldn’t let people talk you out of watching at least the next 2 in the series. Many say 2 is the best, and they’re not wrong, but many also say that a third movie isn’t even necessary, story-wise. I disagree, and think that it actually makes the whole story arc make sense. Without it, there’s a lot of time travel paradoxes that plague the narrative, IMO. So I say at least watch through 3 and see what you think.
4:01 Kyle: "What day is it?... The date!" Man: "12th of May... Thursday" Me: "Hey that's literally tomorrow!!!! Just not the year. Same day and date though!!! What are the odds???"
Before Schwarzenegger was cast as the titular cyborg, Tom Selleck, Lance Henriksen, Chevy Chase, Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson were considered, until Schwarzenegger finally signed on to the project after completing Conan The Destroyer which was also released in 1984 Sting,Bruce Springsteen, Michael O'Keefe, Matt Dillon, Kurt Russell Treat Williams, Christopher Reeve and Tommy Lee Jones were considered for Kyle Reese till Michael Biehn was cast. Lisa Langolis Jennifer Jason, Melissa Sue Anderson, Rosanna Arquette Lea Thompson and Jessica Harper were considered for Sarah Connor till Linda Hamilton was cast.
I saw parts 2-5 in theaters. Terminator has been part of my whole life. Part 2 is great, but this original is still the best in terms of creativity and tone.
The advancements in special effects tech between 1 and 2 is astonishing. By the way, if you ask most fans (myself included), there were only 2 movies made, 1 and 2. No more. Only 2. I repeat, ONLY 2!!!!!!!
19:55 As I understand it, James Cameron once had a _fever_ dream with this image of a being of pure metal, emerging from a fire. Of course, it was an incredibly compelling image. He held onto it, pondered it, considered it (creatively), and ultimately spawned this _story._
It always amuses me seeing people online reacting to the nudity at the beginning of the film, my favorite was Marry Cherry's reaction "So far I'm liking this, it's got a lot of naked men in it, naked buff men !"
You can still get Arnie's first jacket. It's called an M65 field jacket. The one he is wearing is heavily customised as he took it from a punk. It can be bought in all kinds of colours and patterns. If you ever grab one, get one size smaller than you usually would, as they are very loose fitting. They are considered a design classic.
The first part where Arnold asks for the guys clothes , that was filmed at the Griffith observatory 🔭 in Los Angeles . And the gun shop with Arnold , was also filmed in Los Angeles near the movie studios. - " Shoot Me , But Not My Sandwich !!!! 😡😂😂😂😂. The Terminator changes his voice in the cop car and says he's approaching Overland. That's an avenue also near the movie studios .
James Cameron wrote and directed The Terminator. He also wrote and directed Aliens (which you have reacted to on your channel.) The top 5 movies box office of all time is currently 1 Avatar (written and directed by James Cameron) 2.84 bill 2 Avengers Endgame 2.79 bill 3 Titanic (written and directed by James Cameron) 2.20 bill 4 Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2.06 bill 5 Avengers Infinity War 2.02 bill
Yes, yes the punk leader was Bill Paxton. And the pawn shop dealer (seriously thought it was gun shop) was Dick Miller, who I know best as Mr Futterman from Gremlins. Also have to say, I've been intensely claustrophobic since accidentally locking myself in the boot (trunk for those in the US) of the family car when I was about 8. That being said, seeing Sarah trying to pull herself through the industrial press at the end, Terminator inches behind her, unable to get a decent grip because of the smooth metal, would have been as sure fire a trigger as those hours in the boot.
Watching your reactions as good as watching the movie! You have so much fun! I loved when you got all grossed out when he cut open his arm but knowing he was about cut his eye out, I thought: "oh you poor lady!! Hehehe Reese "always wondered what she was thinking about"in the photo. She was thinking about him and thier love however brief. What a mind f**k! I love that ending. When I first saw it, it blew my mind when it finally sunk into my brain!! 😲 😱
I have you tube on my tv and I know squat about texting you. So, I came to my iPad to make a few comments. I wasn’t allowed tv when this came out. But years later I started terminator series and it just got a hold of me. I watch reactors who tell the ratings on each movie by the professionals and then by the fans. But one of it matched my gage. I love every movie except the one where John changed. But thank you so much for your exciting reaction. I never tire the first one. It’s the screenplay….the story. How in the world did James Cameron come up with 3 Sarah Connors, 2 of them showing up dead at the police station. I understand when James chose Arnold Swazzineggar Arnold told him how he would move. How he would become the cyborg. Also, Arnold’s character killed over 200 cops and people in the first movie. James had to change terminator 2. It doesn’t mess the movie up. But I bet that first movie hard an R rating. I don’t believe a person could actually count the number of men he killed but it was all in that police station. Thanx again. I watched your galaxy quest first today. Your humor with the aliens was great. I’ve seen the documentary on the movie and the Star Trek franchise considers galaxy as the same as their movies. I do to. They brought the nerds to a convention.they tied them into the story along with the aliens. And the biggest thing they did for me was putting segourney weaver and that Alan guy too. Segourney coming from an Oscar win for Aliens a horror drama to this parody, boy did she pull it off.
You will like 2 even better, and 3 is okay, don't bother past that. Remember, terminator's are manufactured so there are 100's that look like Arnie to be sent back.

When you grossed out when The Terminator was cutting his arm and eye, I thought to myself, didn't you just watch "The Thing", lol! 🤣
J Cameron is now kicking himself that he didn't call the movie Naked Man One
TAKE NOTES, MR. CAMERON!!
And now the Terminator crawling after Sarah will forever be in your nightmares lol 😆. Great reaction
The fact that OJ Simpson was looked at for the role of the Terminator but they thought he didn't look like a killer 😳😳😳
Hey Sam, I've noticed when non-Americans watch "Terminator" they are pretty shocked at how easy it is for someone to just walk into a gun store and start buying up everything in sight. As long as you have the cash they'll gladly supply you with the weaponry.
But you still can't get gigawatt pulse canon.
@@Dularr Why not?
Provided you pass a background check.
@@dustinfain5554 about 9 years to early. Mandatory background checks did not start until 1993.
14:41 And right here is why the iconic phrase "I'll be back" became iconic.
And definitely do T2, too. But don't research it! It's good, even better. 😉
I'll be back 😎... for part 2!
“Naked Man One and Naked Man Two Are About to Collide!” would have been a pretty great tagline.
After the second one, I recommend The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a TV series that came out after the third movie, but retcons its events so it actually directly follows T2 and sorta, almost, kinda, not really ties in to T4.
This is a classic. And you will love the sequel, I can promise you that!
Your Arnold impresions are hilarious! Please do them for the rest of the series! :D
Yes! More please!
After decades this movie is still great. Imagine, you would see this movie in your late teen years as is was published. I did and it was absolutely impressing.
Terminator, T2 and T:SCC are where the franchise is at its best. No need to watch any of the others.
Great reaction! Can't wait for T2.
When the Terminator became just a torso crawling after Sarah it originally scared me bad, I was young when I saw it.
"West bound on Oh-lim-PIC approaching Overland"
My favorite line in the movie.
Fun Fact for you, Sam:
The actor who played Kyle Reese, Michael Biehn, co-starred With Bill Paxton in the movie "Aliens"
And Bill Paxton also co-starred in "Predator 2" with Danny Glover, so essentially, his character gets killed off by a Predator, an Alien Xenomorph and a Terminator
Anakin: This is were the fun begins.
Uuu, one of my favourite 80s' classics! 😎 I really enjoyed your reaction, perfectly spot-on, this was such a wild ride of a film and your reactions truly reflected the action and the dynamics! Loved the "naked man #1 & naked man #2" referencing 😂 Plus, you're really good with predictions, you literally made like 4 of them and all came true, I honestly have no idea how you do it 😄
I would definitely love your reaction to Terminator 2, didn't see the whole film but a lot of cutscenes so I think I do have the basic idea what will be going on there, and I can only tell you - yep, there are more naked people coming 😏
I remember that I never saw this at the theater, I waited until it got to Tv, probably HBO at the time.
Loving the Arnie voice 👍
O J Simpson was in the running to play the terminator, bur was passed over as "no one would see him as a killer".
WELL-- 😳
A bit of trivia...the last punk Terminator Arnold kills at the observatory is a young Brian Thompson, the shape-shifting alien bounty hunter on, "The X-Files".
This & T2 are two of my favorite James Cameron films hands down!!
Arnold says “I’ll be back” in 8 movies. I was today years old when I found this out.
The anniversary of Terminator's arrival is upon us: in two days, it will be, "Twelfth...May...Thursday!"
Hi O. G. Bojangles, thank you for choosing " Der Terminator ". This movie has " Arnold ". Here is a nice soundtrack cover inspired by this movie: RUclips video: The Terminator Theme (1984) Live Cover " Hey! "
"Did you pay the $4.50, sir?" That got me lol
🤣🤣🤣
Rude guy didn’t pay!
This is one of my favorite and probably one of the best sci fi films ever made. Thanks for getting to it, as your reaction was excellent.
The first two Terminators are required viewing... after that, well, if you have the time... I have not seen any of the TV series based on this franchise, but people say it is pretty good.
I can tell you loved this one, and hope to see T2 soon. It is great. Keep on doing what you do -- funny and endearing.
"May 12... Thurday" was in 1983. That was the same year The Terminator was made. May 12th, Thursday is today. I am watching this movie tonight.
great reaction.
When you watch Terminator 2, I highly recommend you watch the theatrical release. It's much better than the director's cut in my opinion.
12:15 one of the exceptionally very few/rare elements that fans of the films point out…
Cops are armed with low power pistols…yet terminator said “oh shit, the cops” and RAN AWAY…rather than just killing her right there and then easily…???
But movies gotta movie…
Great reaction! I wouldn’t let people talk you out of watching at least the next 2 in the series. Many say 2 is the best, and they’re not wrong, but many also say that a third movie isn’t even necessary, story-wise. I disagree, and think that it actually makes the whole story arc make sense. Without it, there’s a lot of time travel paradoxes that plague the narrative, IMO. So I say at least watch through 3 and see what you think.
Exactly this.
Garbage truck driver: What the hell?
Sam (literally 4 seconds later): What the hell?
LOL
We're on the same wave length!
3:13 Tha was Bill Paxton. 😀If you will watch Terminator 2, watch, please, theatrical version, special director's cut has different (alternate) ending.
Yes!!!
4:01
Kyle: "What day is it?... The date!"
Man: "12th of May... Thursday"
Me: "Hey that's literally tomorrow!!!! Just not the year. Same day and date though!!! What are the odds???"
Omg! You’re right!! 🤯
Before Schwarzenegger was cast as the titular cyborg, Tom Selleck, Lance Henriksen, Chevy Chase, Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson were considered, until Schwarzenegger finally signed on to the project after completing Conan The Destroyer which was also released in 1984
Sting,Bruce Springsteen, Michael O'Keefe, Matt Dillon, Kurt Russell Treat Williams, Christopher Reeve and Tommy Lee Jones were considered for Kyle Reese till Michael Biehn was cast.
Lisa Langolis Jennifer Jason, Melissa Sue Anderson, Rosanna Arquette Lea Thompson and Jessica Harper were considered for Sarah Connor till Linda Hamilton was cast.
++ for mentioning 'stop motion' which was not as noticeable when I originally saw the first run release.
Another interesting bit of trivia...that cop relieved of his cruiser after the bar appears again in T2!
7:19 "I did not expect that response!"
Yeah. Lt. Traxler's a good man. So unfortunate what happens to him in this movie.
Out of all the people the Terminator harmed and/or killed in this movie....the bouncer at the nightclub got it easy
"Who rented a place to this man?" 😂
Truly!
Looking forward to Terminator 2. It's even better than the first
It always amuses me seeing people online reacting to the nudity at the beginning of the film, my favorite was Marry Cherry's reaction "So far I'm liking this, it's got a lot of naked men in it, naked buff men !"
T, T2 and Dark Fate are official Terminator films. The others are all like spin offs, but I enjoyed them all very much. ~ Thx for your reaction. 👍
You make movie-watching so much fun!
I'm so glad!
Great reaction vid as per, This film is absolutely brilliant but Terminator 2 is by far the best of the whole franchise 😎
He also wrote and directed Aliens (which you have reacted to on your channel.) The top 5 movies box office of all time is currently
1 Avatar (written and directed by James Cameron) 2.84 bill
2 Avengers Endgame 2.79 bill
3 Titanic (written and directed by James Cameron) 2.20 bill
4 Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2.06 bill
5 Avengers Infinity War 2.02 bill
Avatar 2 comes out this winter... teaser trailer was released yesterday.
When you do Terminator 2 You HAVE to do the extended version. It makes all the difference.
I respectfully disagree. Theatrical for the first time
Im pretty sure neked man 1 & 2 was the way the lines were wrote in the script... Lmao
Watching your reactions as good as watching the movie! You have so much fun! I loved when you got all grossed out when he cut open his arm but knowing he was about cut his eye out, I thought: "oh you poor lady!! Hehehe
Reese "always wondered what she was thinking about"in the photo. She was thinking about him and thier love however brief. What a mind f**k!
I love that ending. When I first saw it, it blew my mind when it finally sunk into my brain!! 😲 😱
So glad you enjoyed!! Thank you!
Great reaction to a classic.
A great one. The sequel may exceed your expectations.👍
Did not know you hadn't seen this movie! A pleasant surprise to see in my inbox!!
14:30 No. That's not the context.
14:41 That's the context of that line. hahaha
Greetings from Finland! Cannot wait to see your reaction to the rest of this franchise!!! "I'll be back" 😎
I have you tube on my tv and I know squat about texting you.
That was a BLAST! You are awesome! Love your Arnold impressions.
You will LOVE T2, looking forward to seeing your reaction!
The accent 🤣😆😭 Can any of us help ourselves! 😁
You will like 2 even better, and 3 is okay, don't bother past that. Remember, terminator's are manufactured so there are 100's that look like Arnie to be sent back.
Thanks for the solid reactions. "Don't make it a good day. Make it a great day!!"
I haven't seen this film in years, I think your going to love it, it came out the year before I was born so I feel OLD lmao
