  • The Magnetic Fields play their song "Punk Love" live in concert at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, California on April 28, 2024. Punk Love originally appeared on the band's sixth studio album, 69 Love Songs (1999).
Stephin Merritt said this about the song's composition: "I was sitting there at my favorite bar--the one with the great jukebox--and The Only Ones' 'Another Girl Another Planet’ came on the jukebox, and I thought, well, I’ve never written a punk rock number, I think I’ll write one now. And you know when faced with 69 songs, sometimes you want simplicity and conceptual ease. So I wrote all five words in one sitting. And I reused two of the words, so there are only three words in the song."
The Magnetic Fields are an indie pop band led by founder, lead singer, and principal songwriter Stephin Merritt. Joining him onstage were Sam Davol (cello), Shirley Simms (vocals, ukulele and autoharp), John Woo (banjo, guitar, and bass), Chris Ewen (keyboards), Claudia Gonson (keyboards and vocals), and Anthony Kaczinski (guitar and vocals).

    Magnetic Fields official bio:
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of its release, the Magnetic Fields will perform 69 Love Songs-the 3-disc masterwork that marked a significant breakthrough for the American band- for the first time in over two decades.
The select run of dates will take place in Spring of 2024, with performances in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Greater Boston and Los Angeles.
The tour will feature all the players from the 1999 triple disc, including Claudia Gonson, John Woo, Sam Davol, Shirley Simms and composer Stephin Merritt, joined now by recent members Chris Ewen and Anthony Kaczynski. The Magnetic Fields will play the album as it was originally performed in the early 2000’s: in order over 2 nights.
To date, Stephin Merritt has written and recorded twelve Magnetic Fields albums, including the beloved 69 Love Songs and 2017’s critically acclaimed Nonesuch box set, 50 Song Memoir, which chronicled the first fifty years of the songwriter’s life with one song per year. New York magazine called the box set “a celebration of Merritt’s sky-high range as a writer and a player … a delightful flip through the untold back pages of one of rock’s most singular voices.” Merritt has also composed original music and lyrics for several music theater pieces, including an off-Broadway stage musical of Neil Gaiman's novel Coraline, for which he received an Obie Award. In 2014, Merritt composed songs and background music for the first musical episode of public radio’s This American Life. Stephin Merritt also releases albums under the band names the 6ths, the Gothic Archies, and Future Bible Heroes.
