- Two ex-sheriff's deputies in Mississippi have been sentenced for their part in the racially charged assault of two Black men. Hunter Elward and Jeffrey Middleton, members of the self-proclaimed "Goon Squad," received sentences of approximately 20 years and 17.5 years, respectively, for their part.

You are correct. It's a behavior that has persisted since the end of the Civil War. There are those within the descendants of the old southern Confederacy that still believe that their white skin (the lack of pigmentation) gives them some superiority over anyone with deeper skin pigmentation. It's ridiculous of course. But they've been raised to believe it.

This isn't isolated to Mississippi. We have a similar thing in the capital of Louisiana. It was called the Brave Cave. A secret location where the police would take black people and torture and beat them. They even made a grandmother strip for a search of her body. It was brought to light and several officers were prosecuted but many in the community want it brought back.

Forgiveness doesn't exonerate the offenders. Forgiveness helps to set the victim free. Maybe this man doesn't want to carry the hatred & trauma for the rest of his life. I'm sure he will remember but it seems that he's determined to not allow them to continue to hurt him.

As I was reading what happened and hearing the reporter, I felt pain for what happened. They way they treated those men is just so horrible!!! Such racists!! Those apologies are not genuine. I truly hope the men will be able to live their lives and not let what happened to them define them. They are strong to speak out, show their faces. And to forgive....bc true forgiveness is for himselfbto be set free.
