    Here's an idea to help make your press a bit more user friendly when stamping plates like that. Print your plates with a small lip, say 1/8" wide all the way around. Then on your upper wood piece put a couple of thin clips on each corner to hold the plate in place. That will hold it in place so you aren't trying to get it aligned all the time. You can put a guide mark on the edge of the wood to help you center things in the press as well.

    @punishedpropsacademy - Leather worker here, if you properly "case" the leather you will end up with a cleaner and crisper image. Casing is soaking the leather, then allowing it to dry back to an almost dry state (only the top side is allowed to dry, by leaving the bottom in contact with a marble). This allows the corium and flesh side of the leather to remain damp, meaning the grain (outer surface) is drier, and able to take a much crispper impression.

    Nice touch with including both manual *and* specialized tool methods for so many steps. I always try to explain to friends about how the specific tools are nice, but not always "essential" to the process.

  • @FischerBuilds
    @FischerBuilds 3 года назад

    BILL! You mad genius! You can totally make a roller. If you create a flat sketch with your texture outlined, just like you did but make the length the circumference of the roller you want. And the height the width of the roller you want to use... Create a cylinder the circumference and height you calculated. You can extrude the sketch from object face instead of from plane, select the cylinder face as the object, and it will self wrap around. If you are careful to make sure the two edges that seam match, you will have a continuous pattern. Punch a hole down the center of the cylinder and Bob's Your Uncle! Hope this helps. - Love Fischer Builds

    • @tiffanysandmeier4753
      @tiffanysandmeier4753 3 года назад +1

      The roller should be solid (100% infill), and the inside diameter of the hole in the center should match a metal tube since the metal is less likely to deform under pressure. It would allow for printed details, but rigidity of steel. You could just go with a rod for an axil, but thinner print and more metal might be more durable. But the tolerances have to be pretty tight. Otherwise, there is unnecessary strain on the parts.

    If you haven't tried it, you can do 1/8 & 1/4 inch foam on your vacuformer. Just clamp it up & heat it like plastic... It'll hold it's shape when cooled, & works great for flexible face shells and formed areas like armor joints...

  • @Yarkspiri
    @Yarkspiri 3 года назад

    Printmakers have a rolling press which would make it easier to do larger pieces. Using that combined with something like the heater element from a vacuum press might be very efficient. Another option would be to use what Frame shops use. Frame shops often have large machines used for dry mounting which will use a vacuum and heat to dry mount artwork. If you happen to find one for sale in your area I'd check to see if it can reach the required temperatures.

    Have you guys thought about finding a way to get some heat-resistant material ones, maybe out of some sort of metal? I bet it'd work great if you could sear the patterns into the foam, and be able to apply heat to the foam after for molding and such. Plus, heat sealing!

      Maybe if we end of making a lot of them, but it's really fun to be able to just print them as needed!

    Nice prop as always! I like all your videos, but the long build videos are the best! Especially on mondays! :D
    That patterning technique gave me an idea. On Shapeways on other 3D printing companies, you can print in metal. I already printed some jewels in steel, bronze etc... and I can say the prints have reasonably good details (made a little snake with scales and the scales have printed nicely).
    So maybe you could print your patterns in cheap metal like steel or aluminum (not that cheap but fairly cheap), and then heat the metal pattern to make like a hot plate that you could then press on the foam, and even can keep heating up with the heat gun while pressing on the foam. Maybe that way the pattern will imprint even better and deeper.
    Well, that was just a thought :D That's a really nice and interesting technique you came up with!
    Thank you for all your content, all your time filming, building, editing etc... That's very much appreciated!

    Start with Clear coat, thin it with paint thinner, add any color for pigment works great for tinting glass/plastic

    As a suggestion, if you didn't already try it, use the impression mold as a heat block when doing long pieces.

      We can't heat the print unfortunately, it would get melty

    You should make the edges of your stamps keyed like the edges of some matting, or those square kids mats. Working with two stamps you could key to the new stamp to the previous stamp for an aliened pattern. Working with the previous stamp in place might work with the heating process as well? Just food for thought, it's not my wheel house. Cool stuff!

    With the amount of fiddly hand cutting y'all do you should look into getting a cutting machine like a Silhouette Cameo. I've found so many uses for mine, and I use it more often than I expected to. Mine will cut 15" wide by I think 8 feet or something. I think it could be a lot of fun for y'all!
    Edit: doh. I saw you use the vinyl cutter literally as I hit post!

    To make a roller you can use the emboss tool in fusion 360. Or use blender to do a heightmap deform on a cylinder.
