I really think the "it's pointless to the grand story" critique levied at a lot of these is unfair. Not everything needs to further some master story. These characters can exist, have adventures, and grow in ways that don't have to lead to whatever the MCU's overarching narrative is. I think trying to force every little bit of content to build towards the overarching story is creatively stifling and also exhausting.
They are adding mid level characters, legacy characters, and fudging continuity after a big event. Just like comics do after 15 years. And is obviously leading up to Secret War.
I think that critique is mostly aimed at Disney since it seems they believe they are masterfully setting up the next endgame But agreed, films can be focused only on the characters and not need to further some grand agenda
I would agree if the mass of content was actually high quality, but it's not - the visuals are diabolically bad and are at the expense of the wellbeing of CG artists.

As people (including Riri's Ironheart) search for Tony, his company's been taken over by another guy who ends up being manipulated/threatened by The Hood's gang - this leads to a big confrontation around a yacht (where the Stark exec ends up giving Tony his company back, so the goons have no reason to threaten him), with Ironheart one of the people involved). Spoiler: that fight ends with Doom exorcising the demon from The Hood and (since Doom's facial injuries were healed after Secret Wars) Doom suffering severe facial injuries in what almost appeared to be his death. His next appearance unfortunately reverted his semi-heroic turn, making him the Fantastic Four's big villain again (after they return post-Secret Wars)
I think there has been too big of an expectation for phase 4 to be interconnected. Some are acting like every movie should feel like a sequel to eachother. It also seems marvel fatigue is only becoming larger, with movies that are completely passable when compared to the MCU catalogue, now being torn apart. Currently it feels marvel is focusing on building their universe wide not tall. What I mean is they are expanding and introducing many new characters, locations, and concepts to the world. Instead of expanding on what was introduced in the first 3 phases. This is required if we want things like mutants. The next phase will most definitely feel more connected. It is hard to make things feel connected with anything more than post credit scenes when most of these movies and shows are introducing new characters.
I was genuinely surprised by Love and Thunder being as good as it was. Based off the reaction to it, I expected it to be very very mediocre. Then it was actually... good. Not great, but pretty good. The only real issue was the 1st act, which was just all over the place and felt... off. I really do think that if this movie came out during phase three everyone would have liked it a lot more than they do now.
100%. Phase 1 did the same thing, introducing characters and establishing the world. Nearly every movie was a standalone story taking place in a shared universe. It was the very end of phase one where we got a hint of Thanos. I admit it’s not been super fun to watch phase 4 but this is kind of just what they have to do. In the UK we had both The Munsters and The Addams Family but it felt that The Munsters ran for longer, so The Munsters will always have a special place in my heart
My bias towards the the Addams Family likely comes from their appearance in Scooby Doo in the early 70s which led into a cartoon series from that era. I didnt get into The Munsters until I started watching Car 54, where are you?
I'm expecting Vision to show back up for Young Avengers, maybe a similar role to the comics depending on how they do Iron Lad, but I'm thinking more likely a mentor figure more like Red Tornado in Young Justice.
The Wandavision production was shut down due to the pandemic and then started back up again. Some actors were still available when production started up again and some were not as available (or not available at all). The odd decisions made to compensate for this are to blame for why the end of that series feels disjointed.
For the record, Rob Zombie launched his career as a solo musician with a song called Dragula, with a video featuring him driving the Dragula car from the Munsters.
As I've always said I don't care about any grand overarching plot, I need the movies to be interesting and the projects to be good with good characters. Right now it's just a very extended phase 1 with worse characters is how it feels to me. The only new character who's clicked with me is shang-chi.
All of these movies are all over the place and cluttered. Even Shang chi didn’t feel like they could tell an authentic story without adding a big ugly CGI ending (similar to black panther). They just don’t feel authentic.
I don't mind that Phase 4 is seemingly directionless as people like to comment. Marvel Studios has taught us to expect a grand plan and culmination, now the new lesson is just that films and shows can be made just because. And that's not a bad thing? Like so what if Moon Knight or Shang-Chi don't appear to be joining the Avengers, at least I had fun with their stories? Phase 4 is redefining the MCU itself, and I'm still very much on board.
I don’t care too much about everything being connected. My biggest issue with phase 4 is that a lot of the content hasn’t been great. The Disney + shows often have pacing issues. While films like Shang Chi & Black Widow would have benefitted from not having the typical Marvel CGI battle as its 3rd act. IMO It was really important that the writing & plot for these Phase 4 projects were strong. My expectations are high after seeing what Marvel is capable of. I just need the same quality of storytelling that I saw in Winter Soldier or Infinity War. I see the potential in some of these Phase 4 stories, but sometimes it’s executed poorly.

Honestly feel like they've spread themselves too thin. Obviously back in the day it was "here's like 5 characters that form the avengers so let's do that" Getting to endgame was a massive achievement. Now I feel like they're doing too much. That's the thing with marvel films it's always in the back of your mind, how can we get to the movie where they all come together? And right now I literally don't see how they can. Personally my biggest fear is that they will run out of steam before we get to that point and we will never see this big payoff.
I was hoping Daniel Kaluuya was going to be the surprise new BP. It's looking more and more like they're giving it to Shuri and I'm not sure I like that idea. It feels way too soon for her, and even if they're not recasting Tchalla, his replacement still needs to fulfill so much story left on the table. I know he sided with Killmonger but I was thinking after the death of Tchalla he'd have some sort of redemption arc.
I think Phase 4 is leading up to the 2015 version of Battle World and Secret Wars. They're already dealing with the multiverse, they've brought up universal incursions in MoM, and now Doom is showing up.
Honestly, WandaVision mainly sets up Young Avengers, if anything. Billy and Tommy. Wiccan and Speed. White Vision being their chaperone. Children's Crusade.

My husband loved the Munsters and I loved The Addams Family, and he was born in ‘83 and I was born in ‘89, and while I saw both shows, I was definitely more into the Addams Family movies than either of the shows.
I think after Kang the next big bad will be Galactus, also I want to see a Tony Stark hologram with a CG Robert Downey Jr. he has talked about how Marvel has his face scanned LOL I think that'd be cool to see. Probably a database of endless quips for him to say as well, like EARTHS AN EGG
So interesting that their take on 'Falcon and The Winter Soldier' is that it gives the MCU US Agent. For me, it was 1,000% bringing Isaiah Bradley's story into the MCU. The two episodes with him in them made the show worth watching for me, even if they did end up buying off his pain with empty liberal rhetoric in the final episode. I guess, to be fair, the episode today is really just, 'What did we get that's going to play out during the rest of this phase or into the next." Sadly, I don't think Isaiah Bradley is going to haunt the MCU the way he deserves to.
I still think Phase 3 is my favorite but I have such whiplash realizing that I’m having such a blast analyzing the greatness of Phase 4 but everyone else hates it 😂
I think Phase 4 is just naturally going to be underwhelming compared to all the insane things that happened in phase 3. Think of it like an anime. Right now we’re in a bit of a filler arc where most of the stories are kind of unconnected to the main narrative. We’re establishing new characters and the word after endgame. I think phase 5 is going to ramp up something important again. People gotta realize that stakes need to be built up. Phase one wasn’t very interesting for the most part, but all those movies had to happen in order to really set everything up
It's also very spread out. There is no really comparing Phase 4 to 3, as three was continuing on what was built in pHases 2 and 1. The real comparison should be with Phase 1.

The biggest issue is that there’s shit in this phase that is just not nearly as important as other movies tv shows etc.. And I get why, Marvel needs to expand the world to fit all these characters into it on top of that you have to fill up the avengers roster with those who have left died or whatever. But when you have shows like Moon knight or Hawkeye or a movie like black widow that adds pretty much nothing to the overall phase of movies, then it leaves a big disconnect for those who have been used to all these movies and shows being connected in one way or another for the past like 8 years. General audiences aren’t going to look as deeply into this as people like us who listen to these podcasts and wait for the reveals and look deeper into what they’ve shown. This phase feels VERY disconnected if you aren’t actively digging deeper into the movies and shows. It’s an odd approach for Disney, but I guess we’ll just have to see what avengers four even is because even with shows like Loki and doctor strange pointing towards multiverse stuff and maybe secret wars being the future of the MCU, there’s still no guarantees. They could just fight kang in the next movie and that’s it no secret wars involved, who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see for now.

I reckon that Ms Marvel's bracelet and the 10 rings are Kang's technology that was lost in the past during a second multiversal war (secret wars?) caused by the death of he who remains, which is why Wong doesn't know about them, they aren't magical at all. This technology is trying to reconnect with whatever it can find in the present, across vast reaches of space.
Deadpool brings in Hugh Jackman and they consistently argue because Deadpool keeps telling him he's Wolverine. Eventually annoyed over it Deadpool shoots Hugh Jackman to prove its Wolverine and he will heal back but Hugh Jackman doesn't.
Spider-Man No way home and Shang Chi were definitely the standouts. The first and second acts of Shang Chi were really solid and had amazing action sequences but I personally think it fell apart and became generic in the 3rd act. I wish they didn't have a big dragon demon fight and kept it focused on martial arts
Totally agree with your take on Shang Chi. Too much cgi green screen stuff. Wish they kept it a little smaller scale. Personally I enjoyed Eternals more than most people did, if only because it was a nice change of pace for mcu films. Just my personal thoughts tho, I understand why people didn't like it.

I understand the FAWS complaint of “it ends where it started” and it’s true to an extent but it also brushes over Sam’s whole character arc in the show. He initially doesn’t want to or feel qualified to take on that mantle and all the baggage it comes with it, especially after hearing Isaiah Bradley’s story and how he was treated as a black super soldier. But by the end he decides to change the status quo and say “we can be better! we can reinvent what it means to be captain america” and idk i think that’s all pretty cool.
Young Avengers Vs Kang, iron lad is going to be Ravona or whatever “big plot twist” they can do. I’m definitely going to spend 40$ on Disney plus to watch that one !!!
This is a week late but it’s imperative that I disagree with them on Moon Knight and Dr. Strange. Moon Knight was great and Dr. Strange was utter crap that deserves to be buried under 6 feet of actual shit so it becomes indistinguishable from it and it’s never spoken of again unless to talk about how utter shit it was. I don't understand how people can praise Black Widow but then shit on Eternals... Like I guess it's just me but Eternals was soooooo much better than Black Widow. I also really disagree with them calling Zhao's directing/cinematography boring. I think Eternals is one of the most visually appealing film in the MCU. The sets they build and the locations they filmed in were gorgeous, all their costumes were hand crafted, insanely detailed and distinct from one another, all their powers were visually different from each other, the fight scenes in the jungle and on the beach for amazingly shot and the CGI is easily the best in Phase 4.
Mason's pure joy every time the dog comes in always makes me smile.

As I've always said I don't care about any grand overarching plot, I need the movies to be interesting and the projects to be good with good characters. Right now it's just a very extended phase 1 with worse characters is how it feels to me. The only new character who's clicked with me is shang-chi.
All of these movies are all over the place and cluttered. Even Shang chi didn’t feel like they could tell an authentic story without adding a big ugly CGI ending (similar to black panther). They just don’t feel authentic.
I don't mind that Phase 4 is seemingly directionless as people like to comment. Marvel Studios has taught us to expect a grand plan and culmination, now the new lesson is just that films and shows can be made just because. And that's not a bad thing? Like so what if Moon Knight or Shang-Chi don't appear to be joining the Avengers, at least I had fun with their stories? Phase 4 is redefining the MCU itself, and I'm still very much on board.
I don’t care too much about everything being connected. My biggest issue with phase 4 is that a lot of the content hasn’t been great. The Disney + shows often have pacing issues. While films like Shang Chi & Black Widow would have benefitted from not having the typical Marvel CGI battle as its 3rd act. IMO It was really important that the writing & plot for these Phase 4 projects were strong. My expectations are high after seeing what Marvel is capable of. I just need the same quality of storytelling that I saw in Winter Soldier or Infinity War. I see the potential in some of these Phase 4 stories, but sometimes it’s executed poorly.

Getting to endgame was a massive achievement. Now I feel like they're doing too much. That's the thing with marvel films it's always in the back of your mind, how can we get to the movie where they all come together?
And right now I literally don't see how they can.
Personally my biggest fear is that they will run out of steam before we get to that point and we will never see this big payoff.

I was hoping Daniel Kaluuya was going to be the surprise new BP. It's looking more and more like they're giving it to Shuri and I'm not sure I like that idea. It feels way too soon for her, and even if they're not recasting Tchalla, his replacement still needs to fulfill so much story left on the table.
I know he sided with Killmonger but I was thinking after the death of Tchalla he'd have some sort of redemption arc.
This next film, Wakanda Forever, seems to take place during the 5-yrs Post-Snap. Hopefully there will just be a recasting of T'Challa.
I think Phase 4 is leading up to the 2015 version of Battle World and Secret Wars. They're already dealing with the multiverse, they've brought up universal incursions in MoM, and now Doom is showing up.

I don’t know if I would say Americans would remember the Munsters over the Addams Family, I think it’s more to do with age maybe? My husband loved the Munsters and I loved The Addams Family, and he was born in ‘83 and I was born in ‘89, and while I saw both shows, I was definitely more into the Addams Family movies than either of the shows.
I think after Kang the next big bad will be Galactus, also I want to see a Tony Stark hologram with a CG Robert Downey Jr. he has talked about how Marvel has his face scanned LOL I think that'd be cool to see. Probably a database of endless quips for him to say as well, like EARTHS AN EGG

So interesting that their take on 'Falcon and The Winter Soldier' is that it gives the MCU US Agent. For me, it was 1,000% bringing Isaiah Bradley's story into the MCU. The two episodes with him in them made the show worth watching for me, even if they did end up buying off his pain with empty liberal rhetoric in the final episode.
I guess, to be fair, the episode today is really just, 'What did we get that's going to play out during the rest of this phase or into the next." Sadly, I don't think Isaiah Bradley is going to haunt the MCU the way he deserves to.
Of course, the critique of the villains is also 1,000% true.

I think Phase 4 is just naturally going to be underwhelming compared to all the insane things that happened in phase 3. Think of it like an anime. Right now we’re in a bit of a filler arc where most of the stories are kind of unconnected to the main narrative. We’re establishing new characters and the word after endgame. I think phase 5 is going to ramp up something important again.
People gotta realize that stakes need to be built up. Phase one wasn’t very interesting for the most part, but all those movies had to happen in order to really set everything up
It's also very spread out. There is no really comparing Phase 4 to 3, as three was continuing on what was built in pHases 2 and 1. The real comparison should be with Phase 1.
Recently, a friend of mine said he didnt like Phase 4 because there isnt a real leader of the superheroes. Who was the leader during Phase 1? It isnt established that they are even a team until the very last entry..

I never in a million years thought I would hear someone say Eswatini on this podcast. Wild.
The biggest issue is that there’s shit in this phase that is just not nearly as important as other movies tv shows etc.. And I get why, Marvel needs to expand the world to fit all these characters into it on top of that you have to fill up the avengers roster with those who have left died or whatever.
But when you have shows like Moon knight or Hawkeye or a movie like black widow that adds pretty much nothing to the overall phase of movies, then it leaves a big disconnect for those who have been used to all these movies and shows being connected in one way or another for the past like 8 years. General audiences aren’t going to look as deeply into this as people like us who listen to these podcasts and wait for the reveals and look deeper into what they’ve shown. This phase feels VERY disconnected if you aren’t actively digging deeper into the movies and shows.
It’s an odd approach for Disney, but I guess we’ll just have to see what avengers four even is because even with shows like Loki and doctor strange pointing towards multiverse stuff and maybe secret wars being the future of the MCU, there’s still no guarantees. They could just fight kang in the next movie and that’s it no secret wars involved, who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see for now.

Spider-Man No way home and Shang Chi were definitely the standouts. The first and second acts of Shang Chi were really solid and had amazing action sequences but I personally think it fell apart and became generic in the 3rd act. I wish they didn't have a big dragon demon fight and kept it focused on martial arts
Totally agree with your take on Shang Chi. Too much cgi green screen stuff. Wish they kept it a little smaller scale. Personally I enjoyed Eternals more than most people did, if only because it was a nice change of pace for mcu films. Just my personal thoughts tho, I understand why people didn't like it.

I think probably my biggest complaint about Marvel Phase 4 is that it feels directionless. Like we're introducing all of these new characters and concepts like the multiverse and time travel but it just doesn't feel like it's building towards anything.

I understand the FAWS complaint of “it ends where it started” and it’s true to an extent but it also brushes over Sam’s whole character arc in the show. He initially doesn’t want to or feel qualified to take on that mantle and all the baggage it comes with it, especially after hearing Isaiah Bradley’s story and how he was treated as a black super soldier. But by the end he decides to change the status quo and say “we can be better! we can reinvent what it means to be captain america” and idk i think that’s all pretty cool.

This is a week late but it’s imperative that I disagree with them on Moon Knight and Dr. Strange. Moon Knight was great and Dr. Strange was utter crap that deserves to be buried under 6 feet of actual shit so it becomes indistinguishable from it and it’s never spoken of again unless to talk about how utter shit it was.

Gotg vol 3 is going to be last very good Marvel movie.
I don't understand how people can praise Black Widow but then shit on Eternals... Like I guess it's just me but Eternals was soooooo much better than Black Widow.
I also really disagree with them calling Zhao's directing/cinematography boring. I think Eternals is one of the most visually appealing film in the MCU. The sets they build and the locations they filmed in were gorgeous, all their costumes were hand crafted, insanely detailed and distinct from one another, all their powers were visually different from each other, the fight scenes in the jungle and on the beach for amazingly shot and the CGI is easily the best in Phase 4.
Phase 4 does actually have a direction, unfortunately for the studio that direction is straight down the toilet.
