Brother of Princess Diana says ’big questions remain’ over controversial BBC interview - BBC News

- Earl Spencer has said he welcomed the findings of a report into the BBC’s handling of his sister Princess Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir, but believes there are still "very big questions" that remain unanswered.
The inquiry concluded this summer that the BBC fell short of "high standards of integrity and transparency" over the 1995 interview between the late Diana Spencer and journalist Bashir.
Her brother told BBC Breakfast some at the corporation had behaved in a "truly abysmal" and "possibly criminal" way.
The BBC stressed it had apologised.

I can well understand his feelings in wanting more answers. The BBC would do the same if one of their staff had been manipulated and lied to with tragic consequences.
it was the royal links within the BBC that caused this

The question we want answered is why you didn’t allow her to move in home. You could have protected her.
If it is true - which we don't know for sure - then yes, it was shocking and his words at his sister's funeral were hypocritical.
@@Beirut27 that was answered many yrs ago...
He felt that with her fame and media attention that it would have been too much for her to live there. Perhaps in hindsight he regrets that decision but he is well known for being nothing less than a CAD himself.

Most aristocrats become dysfunctional cads after being sent to boarding school from a very early age and having only some ersatz of family life during the holidays all their childhood and adolescence long. That's why Gerald, Duke of Wesminster, and his wife, decided to send their children to a nearby private school.

Take responsibility for things, this family went through enough. It's about integrity, and some thought for impact on others. I hope whatever needs to comes out. If anything can be learned then so be it.
It is something Great in our memories, when we stop and think of the person Princess Diana was she will always live on in our memory's and she will go down in history as the Queen of Hearts. Even after all these years she is still held in high regard by millions.
This brother, was never a brother to his sister. I heard that when she tried to come home after the poor treatment she received, this brother refused to receive her back home. His only show of support was after it was too late, at the funeral. Personally, I have not seen how he has helped his nephew and his family either. Kate's uncle is always out there dishing on Harry. Where is uncle?
I knew this would come up. I think the reason at the time he didn't assist in helping her come back home was that he was worried about how the intense media coverage would harm his family as he had young children then.
Yes I agree. He did not stick to his promise to look out for this nephews but he was far too preoccupied gallivanting around with different women perhaps.

I love the way the BBC put on the screen, events that happened 25 years ago, it smacks of, oh come on guys, let it go! I'm very glad her brother never let this go. If it stops Charles from being king I will be happier.
Because he lived another woman, just the one ? But she played around, she had an unhappy childhood her family set her up for this marriage it wasn’t a love match you fools it was arranged
Absolute disgrace. By using these tactics she probably felt she needed to stay close to the Fayeds, who she thought could offer her protection. Instead it lead to her death.
There is so much not known about that situation, so many layers of intrigue and legalities, national security, etc that will never be known. Different things swept ". under the rug".....like the issue that Dodi was engaged to a model that he left waiting in a nearby location because he was summoned to be with Diana. Then when all the photos came out, that model sued Dodie ( Gloria allred?) But just after the crash held a press conference about dropping the charges. As the world watched in stunned horror.

The last casualty was the life of Princess Diana who lost her Scotland Yard security , who will it be this time ?

They're talking about an interview which Diana did with Martin Bashir in 1995 for Panorama, a documentary programme produced by the BBC. As you are unaware, I'll give you a bit of background. In this interview, Diana revealed many things that weren't public knowledge such as, that she was unhappy in her marriage with Charles, he was having an affair, she was having an affair and that was committing self harm.
Recently, however, it was revealed that Bashir used deceitful means in order to get her to do the interview. Basically, he got a graphic artist who worked at the BBC to fake some bank statements that showed a transaction between a newspaper group and one of Earl Spencer's (Diana's brother and the guy in the video) secretary as a way of gaining the trust of him and his sister.
Hope this helps.
He also said to her that they had put a device on William's watch so they can track her. He told her a lot of lies and as consequence she refused royal protection that was offered to her after divorce. I wonder what would have happened if she didn't refuse the protection. I am pretty sure they would have never allowed her to be driven by a drunk driver.
William has stated that the lies Bashir told Diana caused her a lot of paranoia during and following the divorce. He believes those lies created a chain of events that lead to her death.

(1) Millions of viewers whose opinions were shaped by their trust in BBC were also harmed, many still hurt today; (2) that Editorial bias continued to rear its head through the events of the past 5 years when a great deal on the new stream was editorialised, and the criticisms ignored; and (3) many of these decision makers are still within the institution, holding to positions of influence and can't see how they have failed the public, domestic and international. Ignorant
Rosa Monkton, a very good friend of Diana’s, who Diana holidayed with about a month before she died, has said Diana regretted giving the interview.
Moreover William has blamed the fake paperwork for increasing his mother’s paranoia between the divorce and her death. It’s quite probably she wouldn’t have ditched her police security without the lies Bashir told her, and if she’d kept her police security she would never have been in a car with a drunk driver.

It's sad that a lady, who would have to be married some day with a normal existence, had to be dragged through the complications with society!
Had she lived, being a capable person, she could have fulfilled her dreams; at least in part for those she loved and her country.
We ask governments in all countries to unite the bridge pillars as high as one or two meters so that if a car hits a bridge support, it can still slide not as badly as a car crashes into a bridge pillar so that an accident hitting a pillar like what happened to Princess Diana does not happen again, sorry and thank you.
Why is the BBC ALWAYS having to make apologies? Why can't you prevent it from happening in the first place. It's not as if you have no control over your presenters...(WILL NOT call them journalists). Don't you people vet the content before it's broadcast? Or is your policy this, that it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission? The BBC, IMO has lost all its credibility and gravitas. You people are just not to be trusted anymore.
I do hope Lord Spencer sees this through to the very end. The best result will be if Martin Bashir is behind bars and the BBC is HEAVILY penalised!! 🇮🇳
The driver of the vehicle was overly intoxicated and then the press-if she had her seat belt on she could have lived. She was in poor hands and surrounded by vultures chasing her with a drunk behind the wheel. Despicable
The bbc publishing this is kind of a power move
💜💜💜
Why are they sitting on the stairs??
His mannerisms are exactly like Princess Diana’s
Why is he even talking to the BBC ????? 😮
Earl Spencer is a very good man. Humble and decent.
no chairs in this house ...
interested .
Nice home
I believe the BBC contributed greatly to Diana's unhappiness and possibly her death. Hold the BBC resonsible
The BBC made her very happy because she wanted to broadcast to the Nation. All you Diana acolytes do not give her enough credit as a PR specialist who could wipe the floor with the amateurs at Buckingham Palace.
@@annewalden3795 you literally have no idea. The bbc and that idiot bashir made her refuse royal protection. The royal protection would never have allowed her to be driven by a drunk driver. Also, for your information, Diana's friend long ago said that Diana regretted this
Martin Bashir is culpable as well.
@@annewalden3795 misinformed
@@arnicepernice8656 I think you are.
I hope he goes all the way and sues the BBC
Listen, Man United might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table. Let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he's done since he's come in. Ole's at the wheel, man. He's doing it. He's doing his thing. MAN UNITED ARE BACK!!!

Why are they sitting on the stairs?
PR decision to maximise effect.
Lord byron at Diana's funeral service
They need to be responsible for Diana's actions??? Did Diana lack capacity when she embarrassed herself? Truly we entered the age when no person is responsible for their actions.
Lady Di did not embarrass herself. She brought love& light into the world.
Princess Diana did not embarrass herself. She spoke the truth. The "royal" family might have been ashamed at the revelations - as well they should have been, and should continue to be.
The bbc should be made accountable for what they did to poor Diana. They’ve rode on the coat tails of the reputation that they once had. Now, they are a disgrace with no reputation to speak of anymore.
Princess Diana would be very proud of the Man Earl Spencer has become.
Perhaps it's time to let it go.....it has been 25 years...time to move forward!!!
Exactly!
No. No it is not. When searching for the truth I've noticed that only the Brave never gives up. It's definitely not easy though.
God I love her boots!
You should have kept that to yourself.
Need attention? Say,”Diana, Princess of Wales”. Bam 💥. He uses her name when needing a lil spot light on himself now and then. Only Diana has the true heart in that family.

So bloody what
Ok can't believe that's him! OMG he looks so old !
I hadn't realised how like his uncle Prince William looks ! One had always taken for granted that he was a Windsor but...
William is handsome
@@stellas8148 Yes, sort of... Not very sexy though, very English.
@@Beirut27 he was gorgeous back in the day.
I applaud Lord Spencer. To lose his Sister so tragically still must be so gut wrenching. Working quietly behind the scene to never forget or give up searching for the truth; pays Diana the homage she deserves. Excellent

Biggest question is why he wasn’t at his daughter wedding it’s so weird
I don't believe it was an accident just hope he finds out I miss her still can not watch her without crying
So you left all these chair beside you and lets the poor man sit on the stairs really
Amazing that such a rich family can't afford a sofa and they had to sit on the stairs. I'm tempted to start a Gofundme to help them get somewhere to sit.
That was my immediate thought too
