Yesterday I got my first kitten. The girl at the shelter described her breed as "calico". Well the only place I remember hearing that word was in this song, so I named her Tango.
The very first piece I heard by Tom Waits. I still remember when i heard that "confetti line" in the lyrics and the very precise location. Decades of enthusiasm followed. Such an artist!
The first time I heard that heinous out of tune piano intro, my heart sang, my mind perked up, and I was hooked...20 years later I am still in love...thanks Tom!
I want this played at my memorial service or celebration of life or whatever. It's so fitting! My all time favorite musician and performer. A true genius!
At school today, we read about some guy having heard this song on a vinyl that his roommate played, it was described as “a sandpaper like voice sang ‘I tell you all my secrets, but I lie about my past’” my teacher played in class, nobody liked it. Except for me, I like the raspy voice, gives a sense of calmness, the lyrics are great, it’s catchy, and it gives Aristocats vibes. The messy piano intro is horrible but amazing with this style of song, it’s actually pretty great. Adding this to my playlist right away.
A couple of years ago i had just moved into my first apartment in an old crappy Blue collar neighborhood right on the main street which meant that there was cars driving back and fourth right outside my window 28 hours a day and if i was lucky there wouldn't be 2 assholes shouting death threats to each other right outside at 2 AM One night i couldn't sleep and i dont even remember why ... I have had sleeping problems my whole life but im pretty sure it wasn't even the noise outside that bothered me So i started to go through all my old Vinyls at 3 in the morning... Eventually i got to my dads first print "Rain dogs" album that he bought when it came out due to Keith Richards playing the guitar on some of the tracks (My dad was and still is a big fan of The Rolling stones) I loved every song on the album as it seemed to fit perfectly with whatever i was feeling in that crappy apartment at the time But this song always stuck with me and whenever i listen too it these days i remember those sleepless nights in that craphole and i am so thankful that its over
Well, you play that tarantella, all the hounds will start to roar The boys all go to hell and then the Cubans hit the floor They drive along the pipeline, they tango 'til they're sore They take apart their nightmares and they leave them by the door Let me fall out of the window with confetti in my hair Deal out Jacks or better on a blanket by the stairs I'll tell you all my secrets, but I lie about my past And send me off to bed for evermore Make sure they play my theme song, I guess daisies will have to do Just get me to New Orleans and paint shadows on the pews Turn the spit on that pig and kick the drum and let me down Put my clarinet beneath your bed till I get back in town Let me fall out of the window with confetti in my hair Deal out Jacks or better on a blanket by the stairs I'll tell you all my secrets, but I lie about my past So send me off to bed for evermore Just make sure she's all in calico and the color of a doll Wave the flag on Cadillac day, and a skillet on the wall Cut me a switch or hold your breath 'til the sun goes down Write my name on the hood, send me off to another town And just let me fall out of the window with confetti in my hair Deal out Jacks or Better on a blanket by the stairs Tell you all my secrets, but I lie about my past Will you send me off to bed for evermore? This is also the first sing I ever hear by him. My mother used to tape the David Letterman show every night in the 1980's. One night he was a guest on the show and he played this song, and I think also "Singapore" My mother thought it was just weird. When I heard it I placed the tape safely away so she wouldn't tape over it.
It says a lot that when The Pogues were on tour in America, Tom Wait's 'Rain Dogs' was on repeat play in the tour bus. He is one of those unclassifiable talents. Like Shane McGowan, a lot of people don't see past the drinking and depravity to the talent and musicianship underneath, and both of them had that in spades. As we say in the UK, Tom Waits is like Marmite. You either love him or you hate him, and I know which side of the divide I'm on.

Best piano intro ever. Completely disheveled.
One of the most beautiful songs ever to be written.

I always figured the song is someone arranging thier funeral and wake, so that would be appropriate.

This song is eatable.
The opening piano literally gave me chills how it was so out of key but in key😮
This song is underrated 😢

finally people I can agree with, my sister cringed at the piano in the beginning but I thought the messiness of it was what made it beautiful.

Very Fellinian piece.....or should I say masterpiece. Fabulous Tom, as usual.
My brother used to listen to this song all the time when I was little, finally found it!
When I heard this in the Jim Jarmusch film Down By Law is became an instant fan.
Didn’t they only play Jockey Full of Bourbon in that film? That song is how I learned about Tom Waits.
Yes, it opens the film. Any song from the album would have fit into the film, especially the stunning Downtown Train.
Down By Law introduced me to Tom Waits too. Lifelong fan thanks to that movie.
Damn I love rain dogs so much
